Did you all watch a lot of episodes of Friends? I watched a good amount of it but I missed a lot too, especially once they all started having babies. But I liked it. I love catching reruns and seeing the 90s fashion, watching the characters evolve and even adopt each other's characteristics like yelling "Oh my god!" or cocking their heads to the side and looking down and saying something deadpan sarcastic like "could you....BE more excited?"
I think the characters got to be more well developed over time. Joey wasn't just a doofus. He had a childish innocence about him and a sincerity. For Monica they went a little overboard with the whole OCD thing but it worked I guess, it fit with her whole character.
The only person I thought they left underdeveloped was Phoebe. I mean she was great and funny, and they put a lot into her...but I always felt like she was their dumping grounds for plot and character pieces. There were things the writers thought were funny or strange and they wouldn't seem plausible with anyone else so they just threw it all in Phoebe and she could be the zany unexpected mysterious catch-all for the throw-aways. Did you all think this? I mean, was she just a ditz? Because sometimes they made her seem that way. Or was she really flakey? Everyone seemed to work together but she was the extra for the babies and twin and silly stories and dumb blonde jokes. She was like the Kramer. But Kramer was a little better of a character. He held together a little better. I never got a handle on Phoebe. Discuss.

Check me out, I'm a good fucking spouse.
Phoebe was the foil for everybody's character in the early days; she was the one release for the audience when these characters got corny. Although hip for the early 90's, they didn't break any boundaries in T.V characterisation. Phoebe carried that weight for the whole cast. The one quirky counterweight for these dull white kids. Lest she be black. You can see how that eveloved, too, in that they continued to make her story more and more fucked up to counter balance how normal those other kids were.
By the end of the shit, she was(by comparison) a very dark, cynical character. The kind of growth we'd never see in Kramer. The rewarding her with the perfect wedding and relatively trouble-free man of her dreams is like wrestling; the company put her over for 'paying her dues'.
All of that is paraphrased from Miss J (whattup?), except for the wrassling analogy, which is plainly my own. And I'm still nervous about putting on Hardcore porn whenever it's time to share in my interests....

I just love monica and chandler. I watched the show off and on, but I was really anti-Friends when it came out. Mostly because they won a people's choice award and I was rooting for the sitcom that Steve Harvey had out at the time.
I actually wrote a letter of complaint to NBC about Friends for an assignment in high school. IT WAS SCATHING!
As for Phoebe, I suppose I did enjoy her little odd side stories. It seemed like it was weird that her and Joey were the "dumb" ones, but they were all still friends...she never really had much in common with any of the other characters, and for a long time, I had no idea where she even lived. I always wondered why her hair looked so bad for so many years too. Later on they got a handle on it.

I think they could have made something of her character. Nothing in her character stood long enough to make her like the others. She was the one who dated with no promiment, humourous relationships (Janice, Chandler, Ross and his wives, anyone?). She didn't seem to aspire to much at all. Joey aspired to being this great actor and we saw him rise and fall to being Al Pacino's butt. That's what made him so funny. Phoebe was just Phoebe, coming in at the right time throwing in some queer, outlandish comment. She'd do all these Phoebeisms hard to replicate now, unlike Rachel's hair, Ross' "Hiiiiiiii :( " and whatnot.
I don't know if the blonde casting was a deliberate thing, because it'd justify her ditzy character. Although thinking about it, she was beyond ditzy, it was like she was completely detatched from any situation.
Gotta love her though.

oh pheobe. well, as ditzy and out there and.. floopy as she was i see her sort of underlying thing as how as she grew up.. she wanted more and more to be normal. by the very end of the 3rd season she gets really into finding out who her parents are. in the 5th season she's heartbroken when she has to give frank the babies and wants to keep one for herself. at one point she realizes she's had no serious long term relationships and completely freaks out. and when her and mike are going to get married, she changes her mind about giving the wedding money to charity because she wants to have a normal wedding. through all of this you can kind of see how she longs to be normal too, and thats kinda her story.
she's one of my favorite characters though, just cause she's so out there. second to chandler, of course.
im way too obsessed with this show.
i've spent almost 400 dollars on all the season dvd's which i would buy the day they came out, i own the trivia game (both board game and SceneIt versions), i have a CD of all of pheobe's songs, i have a smelly cat mousepad, a sweatshirt, a poster, and know basically every line to every episode.

i actually always thought phoebe was the crappyest actor of the lot. joey was the second crappiest, he couldn't pull off the emotianal thing very consistently...
