it's a peice of wood with wheels... i don't think it really matters what you buy. especially for a novice.

Do you just wanna carry it about to look cool? Nothing personal but I hate skatenoarders- it was bunch of old poo even in the 80's.

aww, cmon' people. It's good to crack some jokes once and a while but I'd be glad to help this person out.
Skateboarding is one of the most frowned apon sports in this damn world and I'd be more than appreciated than to help her out...
I'll help you out with my old school knowlege, Powell Peralta (http://powellskateboards.com/). Their desire of keeping the most lightweight decks when the first production models appeared for the public have once been brought out to be the only deck that used bonite to be the lightest. Being that they used bonite, the decks broke easily. They have advanced since then, offering superb concave in the mid deck and a decent tail.
May I also be pleased to advise you of the assortment of the skateboards from Blind http://www.skatewarehouse.com/DKBLIND.html

So maybe she wants a new hobby in her life. Aint nothing wrong with that and what's with all the hate for skateboarders?
I guess Adrock and all of the other Beastie boys have never ridden a skateboard so, why do I waste my time posting on this damn board.
It's mutiny I tells ya. The deck's what you're all about. You first!!

I will serve you shellfish, even oysters from an autographed Neil Blender deck.

The boards from Blind and Almost tend to have heaps of pop, but are prone to snapping. Depends on how likely you are to either throw yourself down stairs, or land heavily in general.
I'd go with either Girl or Chocolate boards, followed closely by Flip. Used them all in my day, were and still are the most reliable decks for overall wood quality and shape.
And don't buy Independent Trucks.

shut up.
if you want a cheap starterboard, go with blank stuff. its the stuff in your skate shop with no brands on it. its cheap and will last you a while as novice.
if they don't have that stuff, go with southstar, or union of they have it which is even cheaper.
And don't buy Independent Trucks.
i have independant trucks :(
must admit they're quite big.

i always thought inde's were pretty good. usually go with destructo though. hard-wearing and not too heavy.

Indy's were the benchmark for a long time. Then the non-slip axle started slipping in a high volume of them. Go the Grind King or Destructo for sure. And whatever the hot new brand is, because I haven't bought a skate magazine in a long time.
Oh, and to the girl who started the thread, get some Slayer.

yeah, Kid's right. Independent spends too much time making awesome t-shirts to worry about the quality of their trucks.
Ventura makes a way better, lighter and harder to break truck.

I always liked grindkings, they were way ahead with their bolt design. We used to have major problems with the bolts on other trucks, it was too easy to grind away the threads on 'em.
My Shorty's deck never let me down:)

that is a sweet board!
go to you local skate shop. get a blank board (whatever shape/size you like), some trucks (i prefer Tensor, or Independant), some blank wheels (i like big ones), and some blank bearings. after this, it's just a matter of finding some girls to learn from.

The last trick my crippled knee allowed me to do was a backside nollie-flip over a trash can (on it's side). At least I have that. That was in December 2000.
The best I can do now is push.:(
