Nintendo unveiled the official name of its next-generation console, and its called the "Nintendo Wii". The name is.....different, to say the least. But it may catch on, who knows. Here's the press release...

Introducing … Wii.

As in “we."

While the code-name “Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we," which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive “ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.

Because, it’s really not about you or me.

It’s about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything.

We'll know more in a couple weeks at E3, and get to play it this Thanksgiving. The name is a little strange, but I have faith.

Exactly.

But then again when Nintendo first showed the world what the GameCube looked like back at SpaceWorld 2000, I was very disappointed. It's code name was "Dolphin" so I'm thinking this slick blue little futuristic machine, and we got a purple purse. But I got used to it, and even dig its look now. But its a system's games that make it, not the look...

In some ways I wish I stayed at my old school so I could have gone to E3. DAMN IT.

e3? yes, of course! on kotaku.com, and the guardian's gamesblog. and some other random sites. awesome.
it sounds so exciting. most of them seem to be reporting that nintendo seem to be "winning" this year's e3. good!
everyone sounds so delighted with zelda: twilight princess and super mario galaxy - me so happy! oh and the new super smash bros melee with snake. and red steel. and everyone else just generally talking about how lame the sony shit was and how cool the ninty stuff was.
i was just a bit concerned that they didn't reveal the release date [they havn't officially release the price but reports which are quite credible seem to report the $249 mark]. meesa want it as soon as possible!

god, it looks bitchin'. they got the rights to play GENESIS games on it!!!

!!!!

fuck the $500-600 ps3, and the piece o' crap xbox 360s. nintendo knows where it's at. with an opening title like the new zelda, they're going to blow the others out of the water. and the new mario title looks rad too.

weeee!

I've heard from more than a couple people that the lines at the E3 for the Wii are almost twice as long as those of the PS3. Personally, I really don't know what to expect from Nintendo. They've been doing not so hot these past couples years that my expectations for anything from them have dropped significantly... so even the slightest amount of success might trick me somehow.

I'm considering a PS3, but not until that price drops quite a bit. As for the Wii, well it's never really crossed my little mind. I've got a Gamecube already that I hardly ever play, but that's just because I don't have any games for it. I'll have to investigate this matter some more in depth.

I personally don't think that it's a stupid name. It's unique.

I will be getting a wii and maybe an xbox 360 this christmas.

Hello!? Fuckin Super Smash Bros. Brawl?!

The PS3 is going to fail big time. Mark my words, it's going to be delayed till 1Q 2007.

Nintendo already has the handheld market completely dominated, and with the Nintendo Wiiiiiiii they are going to clean up big time. I know for a fact I will be getting the system as soon as I can, hopefully a red version, although I would settle for just the regular color.

The new Mario looks sweet.

Smash Brothers is hot ass. Wario, Meta Knight, Pit, Zero Suit Samus, and SOLID SNAKE????!?!?!?!?1111ONE? That's cool.

I hear whispers of a Bond game too.

I'm pumped.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess.....at launch.

Amazing.

Also, 20 launch titles, 7 being from Nintendo itself. Amazing E3....

This console will sell less than ten units if it's released as "Wii" in the UK. Imagine the embarassing situations that could come about: kids telling their mothers they're going upstairs to "play with their wee", grown men going around each other's houses to "have a look at their wee". Chaos would erupt all over the country.

The 'Wii' seems to have won E3. I think this system will be excellent and I will most likely get this over the ps3. Sony are going to waste a lot of time getting involved in their Blue Ray format wars at a time when formats are no longer important.

Bill Gates will soon be beaming movies directly into your head - forget HDDVD.

Nintendo can name it the "Nintendo Baby-Eater" and as long as it says "Nintendo" before it, it will sell.

Plus, games make a system, not the name.

Zelda yo....

Zelda. :D
