I am trying to host a weekly show on my local campus radio station. The show will be dedicated to the beastie boys. What I am going to do each week is play one beastie boys song and then play every original sample, references, and influences in that song. I would like the show to be one hour, and I am thinking of calling it rhymes for a reason or rhyming and stealing
Here is an example of what I would play for one show
Say the song I want to break down is “pass the mic” I would play “pass the mic” and then:
Dr. John - Walk on guilded splinters (sample, not sure where though)
Bad Brains – Big take over (sample)
Epmd – So what'cha saying (sample)
James Newton – Choir (sample)
Grandmaster Flash and the furious five – Dreaming (Stevie wonder reference)
Run Dmc – Proud to be black (similar lyrical style, yes yes yall)
If I don’t have enough samples or material then I will fill the rest of the time by doing a six degrees of beastie boys thing.
Example:
Get it together
Eugene McDaniels – Headless heroes
Aquarius – The moor machine (is this the real name?)
I would then say tribe called quest also sampled Eugene McDaniels for their album people’s instinctive travels and paths of rhythm,
So I would play jagger the dagger by Eugene McDaniels and then play some songs where tribe samples him Then I would go another artist tribe sampled on that album; Lou reed
So I would play can “I kick it” by tribe, and then “walk on the wild side” by Lou Reed.
Then I would keep connecting songs together until I ran out of time
So what do you guys think?
I still have to try and write up a proposal and will need some help here from the messeage board for samples and extra knowledge.
Like for instance, in what part of “pass the mic” do they sample that Dr. john song? Also what is the name of the moog song that they sample in “get it together”?
