A few select of you will know what im about to bring up...

Also, I suppose this would be a great direct question to Yauch himself.

While making Check Your Head, Mario C and Yauch worked on these songs themselves. Originally both songs were made to feature only Yauch. The other 2 beasties insisted that they rhyme on jimmy james and i guess yauch finally said "lets do it"....(not sure what it would have sounded like with only yauch.

When making stand together (mario c and yauch) I guess Yauch really insisted he do this song by himself, (except for the ending part).

Well on the CYH tour they ended up all rhyming on 'stand together'. Which I think actually sounds better than just yauch himself (thats not a diss).

I guess my question(s) here, for anyone that knows are: How much did Yauch want to do both of those songs solo? Did they run a rhyme lottery for the lyrics to stand together? (for the concerts)

I feel that Yauch wanted more recognition. I think he felt like he was being to much of a contributor, instead of getting some album glory.

He did bring the gratitude song idea to this album, along with jimmy james, stand together and who knows what else.

Thank God Yauch was a team player(y)

I hereby award Adam Yauch with a bucket of cheese of his choice. Word!

I believe for CYH and IC they each wrote bits of lyrics for various songs, then pieced them together. Whereas in PB and HN they kinda wrote the lyrics together.

So to answer your question, I think Yauch probably wrote the whole song Stand Together and since it came from deep down he didn't wanna force the other guys to rhyme it if they weren't feelin it. I mean the lyrics on Stand Together are not your typical bboy silly lyrics.

I don't see things quite the same as I used to
As I live my life I've got just me to be true to
When I find that I don't know about just what to do
I turn and look within to see what I should do
Now I'm not sure what it takes to be hip
A lot of people making music that to be ain't shit
So I ask creation for rhymes for this jam
Gimme lickle solo and I'll take the mic stand

"Love vibe Love vibe Love vibe Love vibe"
"Love vibe Love vibe Love vibe Love vibe"

Yeah..
As the earth spins into a brand new day
I see the light on the horizons's not fading away
Gonna' shine from within like a bright white sun
No need to hide and no place to run
Got the vibrations of the music bringing light to your mind
So you can move and groove and feel the beat of the time
Sense the power in the air as it starts to move
You get a real good feeling that you just can't lose

"Love Vibe" Contemplation time
"Love Vibe" Intuition time
"Love Vibe" Evolution time
"Love Vibe" Resolution time

Free your mind it's time for good times
And let yourself move it's a time to shine
Spread your wings in the sky, feelin' good inside
Breaking fool with no need to hide
I got the music cuttin' throught me
Takin' control of my soul
I can't hold back I've got to let go

Stand together people come together now
It's about time we've got to get together now
Stand together people come together now
I Said It's about time we've got to get together now Come on
Stand together people come together now
I Said It's about time we've got to get together y'all

"I think we should stand together"

Stand Together, The Update and The Bodhisattva Vow are the deepest bboys lyrics for me.

And I simply love Stand Together.

He's actually spoken directly about this in an interview or 2. He never implied that he didn't want rhyming on Jimmy James. He just didn't envision it with vocals when he made the beat. The "Original Original" version of the cut (i.e. Yauch's instrumental" is on the Jimmy James single. The way he came across about it was that Mike and Adrock heard the beat and thought it was dope so they suggested rhyming over it so that's why they put lyrics on there.

There's lots of Beastie Boys cuts that were mainly done by one of them, or are missing one of them. I've never gotten the impression from interviews and whatnot that there's any anymosity over this. Its just the creative process. They don't really seem to have much of an ego problem between the 3 of them, or if they do they keep it well concealed.

At any rate: I'm sure we can all agree that we wished these songs were played more on the live venues

That shit would blow my mind. And hit me with The Scoop, too. I'm telling you... that's my joint on IC. So good.

:o Whatever... this isn't a request line. But yeah... I'm a fan. So what? Eat me. :p

...not your typical bboy silly lyrics.

I think there's a good balance.

"A little something for the wise as well as the fool."

You feel?

I'd like to add "A Year And A Day" to that list. That song is just beautiful.

Yeah on the ego thing I remember Horovitz saying that they all agreed a long time ago to never do anything that all three weren't entirely happy with. There are many reasons for their longetivity, but the lack of any huge megastar ego between 3 genuinely sound guys is a key one.

Yeah I love all these songs! They give such a positive feeling and it's just good music you know, that's why I love the Beastie Boys. And I really like how there isn't a leader, they all do their part and have different and interesting personalities. (y)

thats also a good point

I remember one of them saying that they just "tried to entertain one another" in the studio during the last album. I think thats great

I cant really see them being serious with one another.

Also, during the last tour ( and all tours for that matter) they seem like they are having so much fun on stage. When i saw them live, I knew they wouldnt stop doing this until they are to old to dance

I think yauch just brought the old bass line to the table for gratitude, horovitz took it from there.

It's dope. And from all the threads I've participated in so far, it strikes me as highly underrated on the boards. I mean, shit... for me, in that song, lay the key:

"D.I.Y. that means do it yourself
I don't sit around waiting for someone's help
I don't sit back and say, 'good enough'
I keep on striving reinventing keeping it off the cuff"

It's right there for you.

And when the tambourine kicks in and just compliments the groove? Jea. And how 'bout that fuckin' bell thing at the end of the measures? Like, "ding ding ding dong ding-dong."

Way 2 fonky.

yeah... i won't front. the most fun i had with the distorted mic sound was learning all their lyrics and then rapping along with them. my friends, who are also beastie boys fans, couldn't keep up with me.

 yeah, yeah, i know... so what?!

I'd like to add "A Year And A Day" to that list. That song is just beautiful.I can see Yauch raping with dark sunglasses and keeping the mic and hand concealing his mouth while bobbing a bit to the beat while rapping to that song; just sounds so...jive and sly yet phycedellic, why not the look?

I have to cosign on The Scoop. Personally, I think it's one of the tightest pure hip-hop tracks they've ever done, no question. I remember when Ill Communication came out I was blasting that song in my truck at a convenience store. Two black guys came over and asked me if it was the new Warren G record. When I told them it was the Beastie Boys they looked a little disappointed. Anyway, that song definitely crosses over with true hip-hop heads. Alot of their other stuff doesn't for one reason or another.

There's this old Adrock interview from 1992 where he's talking about what inspires him, and while he's talking, they play "A Year And A Day" in the background. Also in the background, a video plays showing a bunch of abstract paintings come to life. The paintings go SO good with the song, that I think that's what they should have used for a music video. It would be perfect.
