View Full Version : Best movie villains

I wonder if a thread like this was purged. Surely we've done this before?

vil·lain Pronunciation (vln)
n.
1. A wicked or evil person; a scoundrel.
2. A dramatic or fictional character who is typically at odds with the hero.

...I think that second definition is kind of a qualifier. For instance, Henry in Portrait of a Serial Killer is a fantastic monster, but, in the narrative, he's more monster than villain, even though he clearly fits the first definition. Same with, say, the Corleone boys. So I wouldn't count them as villains.

That's where I'm coming from, anyway.

Anyway. Best villains in a movie. If you can come up with ten, more or less ranked, that's all the better.

It's hard.

Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) - Die Hard
Max Cady (Robert Mitchum) - Cape Fear
Bruno Antony (Robert Walker) - Strangers on a Train
Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) - Robocop
Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) - Silence of the Lambs
Eddie Dane (J.E. Freeman) - Miller's Crossing
Noah Cross (John Huston) - Chinatown
Hank Quinlan (Orson Welles) - Touch of Evil
Mrs. Iselin (Agela Lansbury) - The Manchurian Candidate
JJ Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster) - The Sweet Smell of Success

God... if only he'd been in a better movie.

I can't help but wish that the movie they would've made would've centered around his feud with the priest that led up to him cutting his eye out. Then it could end with a better-shot version of Gangs' first ten minutes or whatever.

yeah, that's why I mentioned not the movie. I never saw it and didn't have the desire to because I hate how they very often murder a good cartoon by making movies out of them.

Well, I guess it depends on your tolerance for bad movies. It adds a sort of little girl scout detective character who's pretty annoying, too.

Great Thread A-Z

I happen to be a big fan of the villains. Most of the time that ends up who I'm routing for: flawed misunderstood characters when I watch a movie. Clint Eastwood westerns were law....I saw Outlaw Josie Wales the other night and he was the villain per se

Eric Masters in To Live and Die in LA ~Brilliant. An artist that burns his art and kills "thugs" that try to fuck with his $/rep

30 Seconds- Neil McCauley is Law and the fact that Chris Shiherlis got away was great.

I root for most villains bc the way I see it most of the times they aren't. Victims of circumstances

When I saw A Perfect Murder in the theater, my mom said that she wished he'd gotten away with it. Golden Moment. Hallmark doesn't have a card for that

By the way I think this is his (Kulkin) best movie.

And I like him in that movie he's on a weelchair and the movie talks about a religious school and stuff. I dont remember the name right now.

I like that part when the girl decides to lose her virginity with her gay boyfriend to try to 'cure' him.......hahahaha
