They remind me of a watered down version of The Clash somewhat. I guess some Beatles, too. I never know how/or what to say about bands except that I really enjoy them, so, someone else discuss. :o

Yeah.. A guy came into the gift shop at my work last year. He saw me wearing a Clash-t and said I should give The Jam a listen.

What songs did you listen to? I'm guessing the early stuff from the seventies, since you mentioned The Clash.

In The City.... All the Mod Cons... they did some great stuff.

I think I'm one of about three people who actually liked the Style Council, too. At least, that first album. (y)

the inner soul crooner was always there i think. being a mod he always had an R&b influence but i know what you mean. i think he just leaned a little harder on those influences in his style council period, al green defo came through on you're the best thing

The style council were popular in the uk, they never reached the heady heights of the jam but he still had a good following. The sound he ran with probably alienated some jam fans but then again it gained him some new ones.

...I wish some of those bands had really broke over on this side of the pond. There were bumpy times in the high school newspaper office when I wanted to hear The Jam and everybody else voted for, say, Journey.

I liked them as well, back in the day. Saw them live a few times, too. Going Underground and Town Called Malice are some sort of big posts from that era.
I never got into Style Council, and actually dislike Weller's solo stuff...

i just like the way he changed his style and incorporated all his influences but still stamped paul weller all over it. My brother went to see them on the jam's last tour, and both he and one of my sisters have always been big fans so i grew up with his music. I think it's sad that he hasn't spoken to rick or bruce since the jam split though

i like his solo stuff but i think he's losing his edge as time goes on, but you can't be cutting edge forever right ?

I enjoyed some style council. You had to pretend it had nothing to do with the Jam, but it was solid catchy pop.

Yeah man, how totally unrad is that? You should laugh at these people from atop your mighty unicorn and remind them why you rule so hard.

I like All Mod Cons best, as unoriginal a choice as that may be.

And I find Weller's solo stuff pretty unnecessary too.

His second last album Illumination was good (first side anyway), but his last album As Is Now, was excellent! Have you listened to it! He's regained his edge after poor late 90's if anything...

I remember when they were around.Good Band, were massive in the UK. I remember as kids we would go into school on a Monday after hearing the top 40 on the radio on the Sunday night and being all excited that thJam had gone straight in at No1 again. You'll never get that back again, not now a billion fucking spastics are making shit like Gnarls Barkley No1 by downloading it, lazy fuckers

I rmember I had to do a paper round all week just to save up enough cash to buy a 7 inch single!

that's why kids these days are so fucking FAT!

anyway, The Jam........fucking great group they were(y)

nicely put Paul (y)

like you said about the number ones i think the younger peeps on the boards don't realise how big the jam were at the time. When getting number one meant selling a fucking lot of records

Well, it's just that in sak's case, since she's so hardcore into The Clash and other classic-era punk, I figured she'd be well versed in The Jam. So it just struck me as a surprise that she just started getting into them...

*ahem*

Just because I love The Clash, it doesn't mean I'm into ALL music from that era or genre. Shit, I LOVE Japanese Pop. And they're polar opposites.

For the record; I started listening to The Jam last year. And whether I've listened to them back during their prime or NOW, still, they're a great band. I like them. Be appreciative I'm not dancing naked in front of a mirror to Panic at the Disco.

It's not about when you started listening to them, because that's just irrelevant (afterall, the recordings haven't differed). It's just that my perception of you was different than I originally thought.

Sheesh, you people are touchy.

some examples of this would be nice, start sounds like tax man but that was done purposefully so what else ? I have a feeling when it comes to the jam you know very little of what you speak, no offense

i have no problem with you not liking them each to their own, but the fakes things is bullshit. Weller drew on his influences whilst with the Jam but the sound they made was pretty much individual. At 18 you can't really get the impact the jam had at the time because you weren't around. The Jam are probably one of the most influential bands of the last going on 30 years wether you like them or not

Planetary

you keep bringing up the fact that i'm 18. does that automatically mean that i don't have any musical knowledge, or have never done any musical research?

what about never mind the bollocks in '77, zeppelin were still releasing records 30 years ago, kraftwerk, ramones, the clash, public enemy, pixies, nirvana, rundmc, radiohead(mayby), james brown (though his important stuff came out mayby a little over 30 years ago). etc. etc.

fair enough the jam may have been influential, but i think it'd be generous to say they were one of the most influential bands of the past 30 years.

go on, comment on how my whole 18 years on this earth make me inferior.

i'm not saying it automatically means you don't have musical knowledge i'm sure you do, but then again you still have a lot to learn. I've been buying records since i was 6 but every day is still a school day when it comes to music. I knew plenty when i was 18 but i know an awful lot more now

[QUOTE]what about never mind the bollocks in '77, zeppelin were still releasing records 30 years ago, kraftwerk, ramones, the clash, public enemy, pixies, nirvana, rundmc, radiohead(mayby), james brown (though his important stuff came out mayby a little over 30 years ago). etc. etc.

what about them ? I actually meant UK only but thats my bad for not stressing that, but still i have no doubt the Jam had influence in America. You think Radiohead have had more influence on music than the Jam ? Dear lord

fair enough the jam may have been influential, but i think it'd be generous to say they were one of the most influential bands of the past 30 years.

it's not generous at all, because you don't like them it's clouding your judgement. You don't appreciate just how big the Jam were. I have no intention of trying to make you feel inferior.
