With food, presentation is important.

I know this because I've been watching a lot of Top Chef. I went to high school with the hostess. Not that that matters but then I got really into it besides seeing what she turned out to be like. That snobby guy always got praise for his presentations but they were so lame, he just dotted some food on the plate minimally. Once all he did was put everything in it's own little cup and lined them up and everyone was like "astounding presentation!"

Later we could have a contest where everyone agrees to make the same dish and then we post pictures and vote on who has the best presentation!

I like when they do the stripes of icing or syrup on the plate. That means it's high class.

I don't know what this is, but it comes with curdy yellow fish sauce.

But you must eat it! YOU MUST!

Do you like your macaroni and cheese with hotdogs? Do you like cephalopod mollusks?

Gelatin is one of the forerunners in creative dessert presentations. You can mold it into almost any shape or color, suspend things in it. http://www.swankola.com/md/jello/jell02.jpg
Look at this, you've got pie, cake, some....thing, that, you know, actually looks a lot like those fancy loopy molded candles my babysitter used to have all over her house. You never lit them, they were just for decoration.I think they were popular in the 70s....these things. http://www.theoriginalcandleman.com/candleman/images/hand-carved-wax-hand-dipped-candles.JPG

http://www.daniellespencer.com/graphics/projects/various/jello_turkey/jello_turkey_1.jpg

Believe it or not, this is jello.

Turkey-shaped Jell-O Mold (on a bed of pomegranate seeds):

Mold purchased from Yankee Harvest — it's actually taken from a cornish game hen, but then again a true turkey-sized Jell-O mold would be a bit overwhelming. They recipe for realistic flesh-tone involves adding lite evaporated skimmed milk (for opacity) and a dash of green food coloring to peach or watermelon flavored Jell-O. It essentially tastes like regular Jell-O but the milk adds nice body.

Sushi has the best presentation. I always want to order one of the boats
http://www.gulfshorelife.com/Issues/June01/images1/everymonth/appetite/APPETITE-SUSHI-BOAT.jpg

But that's so much sushi!

It's cute. I would want to keep the boat, too. It's like there is a tiny Japanese village somwhere where they make the sushi and send it out on a little boat. Farewell, little sushi! To have a better life in a far away land, at your table.

Fondant icing is weird. It looks inedible, like marble or fabric or something. It comes in rolled sheets that you drape. Weird stuff. But it looks cool, like something at the Mad Hatter's Tea Party.

sushi....just the mention of the word and i start to crave! i also wanted to say that i hate those fancy places where you order something and you get this tiny portion and its all about looks. and i also hate the places where they just slop a ton of food on your plate with no regard for presentation. you have to be in between. the chef's got to care enough abou presentation and quality, but also give you enough bang for your buck. i mean come on damnit!

Ugh, well they tried for presentation with that onion and lemon slice toothpick thing. But it's still shiny and gross.

http://www.catesgarage.com/food/diet/beefomat.jpg

Ahhh, refreshing cold soups!
This is "Glistening Beef-O-Mato Soup topped with paper thin lemon floaters" and "Cuke Buttermilk Soup." The first is canned beef stock mixed with tomato juice. The second is buttermilk with green onion, parsely, and grated cucumber.

Allow me to recap

This isn't food, but I found it while looking for food and I wanted to share it because I think it's incredibly sad. Look at this old Gma, in bed, probably with mobility problems, making endless mountains of crafts for....no one! There she is all alone in bed with her Christmas tree and her stupid cat patterns.

OCTODOG!

this is from a sushi joint we hit in ATL over xmas.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d164/105cosmo/sushi.jpg

aaand this is a mascarpone plus something or other (i think empanadas) from my favorite tapas restaurant with some buddies of mine a while back. the light in there is really low to contribute to the sex appeal.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d164/105cosmo/lalunadessert.jpg

i've considered going into the food photography bidness. i've got experience doing it. and the models are way less bitchy.

oh i know. fondant is crazy. i love petit fors, and the fondant on them. i wonder if there's a way to make them vegan and in bulk for my wedding...

bummer, i thought this was gonna me a thread of food we have created/have gone out to eat ourselves. that would be awesome. cosmo put some good shit in there tho, werd up! on flickr they have some really great food pools for photographs such as "i just ate..." and, my favourite, "food porn". i put my peanut and oyster food porn pics in there. they love 'em!

from this day forth i'm gonna use this thread to post pics of superb food i have created or have been blessed to go out to eat. i'm in bristol, bath, london and rochester/kent area all this weekend so hopefully my mammy will spoil me with a few mealz. yah. i know we're going to the absolut ice bar and then the adjoining restaurant in london, anyhoo. it's a bar! with everything made out of ice! SHIT YEAH!

ja's chips looked horrible. because they were fries, not chips! proper british thick cut chips, yo. jack macphees. that's where it's at. with some mayonnaise and preferably a smoked sausage.

yeah, imma wear some sensible clothes. they give you a "designer cape", gloves and hats [i predict a picture in the "check out my awesome hat" thread, yo!] to wear though because you are, uh, sitting in an ice chair drinking from a glass made of ice. you can only stay in there for 45 minutes cos apparently it gets a bit dangerous after a while, sitting in a room that's minus 5 degrees. hah!
