That's pretty cool.

We've got a lot of public art in Silicon Valley. A lot of communities require businesses setting up to install public art.

But this one is funny: San José hated/beloved "turd sculpture."

The way I had heard about it was that a sculptor was commissioned to do a piece, and the council rejected his original design. Instead, he pitched a coiled snake which was out of pre-Aztec Mexican mythology or something, and that was approved.

The result was something that looks much like a big old dog turd.

http://myswitzerland.igougo.com/photos/journal_photos/serpent83g.gif

That image, at that angle, is about as snake-like as you can make the thing look. Seriously -- it doesn't read like a snake at all if you're just walking or riding by.

I've been waiting for months for this to happen and it did this week--it was just installed on campus. I am in love with it and see it in an incredibly uplifting light, although there's certainly been mixed reaction to it from some people who see it as a suicidal representation.

:) You can have (some of) them.

I am so glad that some people like them! I have yet to meet anyone in the city who does. Everyone I've talked to thinks they're cute, but like the teddy bear art in Zurich when I was there, people think they're...sweet but maybe not necessarily art and not art for prominent public display. I think people mostly see them as toys, really big ones.

It's all subjective.

Opinion on the "Walking to the Sky" sculpture that I posted about earlier is dividing the campus. A lot of people HATE it and where it's been placed and they don't see that as art either.

sad enough, no. I'm not sure. The longest time I've spent in Bankok at one time was just a day because everytime I'd fly to China, I'll have a day layover on my way to and from.
