i am very interested in how people immediately dismiss it and can't believe people watch "this shit" as i think mostly people who say things like this are television snobs. big brother is like a modern gladiatoral event. people don't watch because they necessarily like people, far from it - they watch because they quite often hate the housemates. and enjoy it. the hating, that is. when that ditzy and boring housemate last year - i can't remember any other features other than she was black, too, if that helps you identify them - when she got evicted and a freaking ORANGE was thrown in her face from the crowd? hot damn, sure i enjoyed it. i disliked her strongly! does this make me a bad person? probably. an uncultured one? not at all.

i went for any interview to be a researcher with channel4 yesterday in london and i had to deliver a presentation on a topic that they would give me 10 minutes to prepare for. the question was "you are a researching on a "topical" programme which is going to be televised on c4 at 7.00pm next friday. what would your lead story be?" well, i thought loads of people were talking about pete. so i picked him. or, as i put it, the "tabloidization of disability". they were well impressed. they said it was certainly topical as they themselves were talking about it that morning.

i don't agree with everyone who has written in to the daily mail [my grandparents buy it and i'm at theirs in kent atm, shurrup!] complaining that it is horrible for someone to be on bb and be exploited for his disability, claiming that other young sufferers will be bullied at school as a result.

well - the question about whether he is being exploited is something you can argue about first off. certainly, i think his disability was a factor in him being included in the house, and the producers would have known it would produce comment outside of the house and make people watch, but mostly i think they picked him because he is, in general, quite a cool dude, from what i can tell. yes, some people may laugh at his behaviour. but i think in this century, if we ALLOW ourselves to find behaviours like this funny and curious and a bit odd [all of which they are], then i think we will truly arrive at a stage where it is "okay" and acceptable being around people with these sorts of syndromes. yeah it is weird. you can't ignore it. giggle first of all, and then get on with finding out what the dude is actually like behind it all. the worst thing you can do is ignore it!
