This legendary Beastie Boy has been around since the group's beginning back in the early '80s. Now, for the first time, the man known as MCA is trying his hand at directing. The feature-length film Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That! shows what happens when you put a camera in the hands of rowdy concert-goers. We're just glad the Beastie Boys came up with this idea before Lynyrd Skynyrd.

You made a film by editing footage from cameras you gave to 50 fans at a concert. Bon Jovi handed out cameras to fans to shoot the “Bad Medicine” video. Coincidence?
I wasn’t aware of the video before the film, so I wasn’t affected too heavily. I came up with the idea that the fans should shoot from beginning to end. I had been thinking about the idea for a few weeks, but we decided to do it at this particular concert only three days before the show. Honestly, I don’t even think it was one of the best concerts on the tour.

How did the cameras impact your performance?
If you make a mistake, you’re like, “Aw, shit. That got documented.” Normally if you make a mistake, you forget about it.

Afterward, did you do something worthy with the cameras, like donate them to an orphanage?
Sort of. We returned them all and got the money back.

Are things that tight for the Beastie Boys?
It’s a production technique.

What was the nastiest thing the fans filmed?
There were four trips to the bathroom but only one of them made it into the movie. Some people snuck backstage and broke locks. I don’t know how they did it.

How often did watching the fans’ home videos make you nauseous?
I don’t get motion sick often. I’ve built my tolerance up with first-person shooter video games.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen during a concert?
Once in Switzerland, someone hit our keyboard player, Mark, with a pie right as we walked on the stage. That means the person brought the pie into the arena, waited up front, hid the pie during both opening acts and had the aim to hit someone. That’s impressive.

Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That! is in theaters now.
