I'm moving out of home in like 3-4 weeks with 2 friends of mine. God bless youth allowance! $200 a week for doing nothing!

We're gonna be much closer to uni/the city/pubs and clubs. We're still looking at places, but we've applied for a few. Can't decide whether we want an old big trashy place or a renovated new place with a dishwasher. Probably go the big place so we can trash it and not have to worry too much about losing the bond. So has anybody got hints about budget, essential items to purchase, etc? Or experiences with living with friends?

Id watch out for cheap places in big areas. Most of the time you'll have to put up with more shit (owner, neighbors, security, etc).

I live downtown, it cost a fortune, but i love it here. Everything is perfect.

I have a dishwater, but I've only used it one time. I've always been a big fan of plastic plates and utensils.

Good luck to you

Thats not very environmentally friendly dude :(

These places are relatively expensive, in one of the best areas in the city. The owners seem pretty lazy because every place i've been in has been left in a dodgy state by the tennants. Neighbours is a worry, especially given we have 10 guitars between the 3 of us :o Security not such a worry, because the places we've looked at all have security systems. We just need to get contents insurance.

i just moved out of home for the first time a few months ago

tip: move in with someone who has stuff. my housemate and her family hooked up a washing machine, fridge, vaccuum cleaner, dinner set, cutlery, pots and pans, essential things like that.

our place is an old character home (divided in two, so its a townhouse) but the back part is completely renovated (new kitchen/bathroom/living room/loft).

do a big shop at a place like - well we have a wa salvage - but whatever the equivalent is over there - big warehouses in the burbs that sell random shit.
we bought heaps of stuff from there we needed for not a large cost
broom, one of those mops that has different attachments (dust attachment, wet attachment) bin, toilet brush, bucket, gloves, cleaning stuff
then target or ikea for some towels/bathmats

ask around and see if any friends are leaving the state, getting rid of stuff, etc.

my workmate is leaving the state and i have gotten from him
new bookshelves
bedside table
new wok
other assorted things

garage sales - are not crap! my iron is from a garage sale - $8 and it works well

roadside pickup - the week we moved in there was a roadside pick up in the area. we got shelves (tall skinny shelves - they are our pantry) some outdoor chairs, milk crates, handy things like that

Cheers hitmonlee and Underage Girlie.

hitmonlee, I am that friend with all the crap. I have a kitchen table, 2 recliners, a futon, 2 coffee tables, a microwave, heaps of glasses (I work in a bottleshop so i've been stashing away free merchandise), cutlery and obviously all my own crap (bed, desk, computer chair, computer, tv, stereo, etc). All this stuff is currently occupying my bungalow at home, along with a large cupboard which i could also take, but given all the places have built in robes, i dont think i'll need to. Thanks for reminding me about the vacuum cleaner/mops and all that small stuff though.

Underage Girlie, youth allowance is $334.70 a fortnight + $67 rent assistance. After tax, thats like $190 a week. If I work 6 hours, i can earn $110 and not get penalised, if i work 9 hours, those extra 3 hours i only get 50 cents in the dollar so $140 wage, if i work another 3 i only get 30 cents in the dollar so like a $155 wage. I think the best option is 9 hours, because I'll have over $300 a week after tax to live off.

We are moving to carlton north or north melbourne. The rent is gonna be about 110-120 per week each, or $85 if we get the 4 bedroom place and find a 4th housemate.

Mum doesnt want me to go obviously. Dad moved out of his home when he was 15 so he kinda thinks if he can do it so can I. Hes pretty much had that belief since i was 15  Thankfully mum is the polar opposite and keeps saying I have to have dinner with them once a week at least, now that I am looking like moving for sure, and that if you ever need to come home thats totally fine.

$150 a week? Is that in a different currency than US?

My rent is $650 without utilities, and that's a good deal for Montgomery County.

I would rather pay rent then live at home. ;)

I live in a "trendy" area as far as the city goes and I pay $710 for a 2 bedroom. Cheap places are out there, you just have to look.

Yeah, I stopped paying rent about two months in so I could feed my addictions. My friend wound up footing the bill. Fortunately, I left the country.

No, no, no: we live in Australia, which is a different country, so of course we have US dollars as our official currency.

No, no, no: we live in Australia, which is a different country, so of course we have US dollars as our official currency.
HAHAHA Awesome.

Okay when you guys say $710, $650, etc, is that per week in US dollars? If so you guys are getting totally ripped off. I am moving to the trendiest area in our city, near the biggest restaurant/pub strip and 500 metres from university, and we are probably gonna be paying around $350AUD a week ($265US). Thats for a four bedroom place. So like $66 US each a week. If theres three of us, its gonna be like $90US a week each

Secondly, youth allowance is not the dole. I get it because I earned $18000 in the last 18 months, whilst going to university full time. After doing that the government thinks I deserve to have enough money to be able to not work as much and focus more on my studies...that must be a hard concept to grasp eh? A government that actually gives (or should i say gave, the current gov has rolled back free tertiary education, made student unions non-compulsory, etc) a shit about your education and welfare ;)

you should get more than $200 yth allowance a week.

my rent was 120p/w and with rent assistance i was getting around $380 after tax per fortnight...of course, that was during my 'between jobs' phase.

What the fuck is this 'youth allowance' you guys keep talking about? The government gives you guys money because you are young and just starting out?

Must be nice.

It's like an incentive to get us to remain in full time study after highschool, I think. The government offers it to F/T students who have been out of highschool for over 18mnths who have earned around $17,000-$18,000 in that 18mnths.

So, you actually have to work quite hard to get it, and alot of students either don't earn enough, or quit thier degrees before the 18mnths is up.

Also, when you're living out of home you get a higher rate, plus rent assitance, and how much you get paid is based upon how much other income you have and how much your rent is.

I think the theory behind that is that students are 'studying' too hard to be able to work enough to support themselves, to buy 'books' and 'pens' and pay 'fees' and 'rent'. Also, lots of kids have to move to go to uni so rent assitance is even more incentive to stay in school.

Just don't tell anyone that we aren't using youth allowance for books and stuff...we're too busy having fun to study.
Actually, that sounds like a pretty awesome incentive program. I don't think we have anything like that here in the U.S. I never went to college so I'm not sure. I've never heard of anything like it over here, though.

Listen you fucking ignoramus. I had to work hard to get that youth allowance, working 3 days a week and going to uni 5 days. And I'm not doing some pissy little generalised course either ok? I'm doing a double degree of arts & law dude. That means a shitload of reading and essays. And considering it takes an hour to get to uni from my place, and an hour back, its also a significant commitment just in terms of hours.

I'm not a spoilt kid. My parents have always rented, they have gone bankrupt twice (from small businesses), and we've always struggled financially. We've never had new cars, always had to have hand-me-downs until i was old enough to earn money. So before you whinge to me that "some people work for their lives" why dont you actually take some time to find out my situation.

Anyway I could have qualified for youth allowance on the basis of my parents financial situation, but I took the hard route because I didnt think it would be fair given that my parents are doing ok now. Anyway whats wrong with being supported to an extent (note I am still going to work so that I can actually live without totally struggling) by your government, so that you can focus on your studies?

yeah redfern. mundine is from redfern (y)

my rent is $260/week. i pay $135 and my housemate pays $125. i got the better room. its pushing my budget, but its worth it for a nice place and i don't think i could handle more than one housemate.

i've never gotten any government money. when i went to uni my parents earned too much for me to be eligible. now i've earnt my independence, i think it would be cool to bludge for a while, but the dole isn't enough to live off.

i feel left out. everyone i know has received a handout of some kind in their life, and i've been paying taxes since i was 14.

be good if i ever decide to study again though. :)

technically, perth. my mailing address is perth.
in reality its wedged in between highgate/mt lawley/maylands
my train station is east perth.

haven't had any troubles with the area so far. my fence has been tagged but i know the slut who did it, and i slashed the tag for her. once there was a drunk aboriginal stumbling down the road, but not many people use our road, just some kids who go to mt lawley tafe.

i love living so close to mt lawley, plenty to do there. maylands is dodgy but has a brand new mcdonalds :p do my food shopping and stuff there, its a bit cheaper than north perth.

unfortunately we were only put on a 6 month lease so if they won't renew it we're going to have to find somewhere new soon :( we love our place. its huge for 2 people.

i love living out of home.

mt lawley seems to be fairly mixed in price
my friend lives a block away, they pay $210/week for a 4 bedroom house.
but it has a shit kitchen and bathroom (old, small, leaky).
some apartments are the same price as what we are paying and tiny
we looked at east perth, but we would have had to pay $260 for a shoebox. need space!
