Over the last couple of months since giving up smoking I've been eating a shitload more and really starting to show it :( I need some motivation tho, like every morning at work for morning tea I'll be like "get something healthy get something healthy" and end up eating a chicken burger or egg and bacon roll.
So lets do this shit. The official BBMB weight loss thread. Post your progress, what you've been doing to lose weight, or if your a skinny person just come and poke us. Hopefully this thread will at least motivate me if no one else.

I've actually done something pretty similar before. I probably wouldn't recommend it tho, even tho the weight did drop off
No, this time I'm gonna concentrate on eating more vegetables and shit and less fatty crap. Combine that with some riding and hopefully I can get rid of this gut

when i was pregnant with my first child, i gained a lot of weight and really never lost it because i became horribly unhappy with myself, and then later on, with my marriage. so, i ate shit and looked it.
then one day, i decided i was done with all that. regardless of how anyone feels about dr. phil, his advice on his show was the best i've heard and it worked immediately for me and i've been the exact same skinny self for over 2 years now. shop the outer aisles of the grocery store. if you're going to eat vegetables, why would you eat the ones in the can? there's no vitamins there. if you're going to have potatoes, why would you buy them in a box? why would you buy poultry or meat or fish that's been processed when you could just get the meat and use your own marinade or seasonings?
things that i can't live without out, i just bought with less fat or less sugar if possible (and if it wasn't worse for you than the regular version).
also keep in mind that smoking blocks some things from entering your bloodstream, and now that you're not smoking all of those things are free to turn into extra pounds. which is why i have not yet quit smoking. :)

Yeah I find weight loss begins at the supermarket. If you don't buy the crap food it's not there to be eaten. Although I do have trouble taking my own advice ;)

5' 9", 175 pounds, 21% bodyfat.
Changing my diet around -- 40-45% each carbs and protein, 10-15% fat. This'll get adjusted as I make progress. I usually drop about two pounds of fat a week and gain about one pound of muscle.
I'm biking half an hour in the morning (that's just over 500 calories) and lifting weights in the afternoon, six times a week. One rest day.

I don't know how much I weigh, but I just went clothes shopping and fit into jeans 4 sizes smaller than I did two years ago, and 2 sizes smaller than last year.
I attribute it to portion control and cooking at home more. also, I ride my bike approximately 50 miles a week or more. and I sleep more than I used to. I didn't really try to lose weight, it just kinda happened. I'm the size I was when I was 14 years old...I'm still pretty fat by normal standards (about 20 pounds over my ideal weight), but I still gets laid. woot.

HEMP PROTEIN!
the most well balanced source of omega 3 and omega 6 EFA's! (essential fatty acids) Also, the plant kingdoms most complete source of protien! also contains all sorts of enzymes, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and plant nutrients that are vital to the human body!
dont go after those power protien shakes and all that shit! get some hemp seed, or hemp powder and throw it on salads, or whatever! the seeds taste really good- they have to be hulled. manitoba harvest is good, also living harvest is good too.
my favorite breakfast:
2 slices of toast (ezequiel bread, hemp bread, or rudy's organic whole grain) some organic humus (roasted pepper), sliced organic tomatos, raw goats cheese, and hemp seed!

Yeah. I've always got tummy pudge that won't go away. I don't mind it too much though. It makes me more cuddly than someone with hard abs. It doesn't make me look fat or anything...just soft. So I'm okay with it for the most part.

I started my plan actually on this monday just past (15th) so this thread's timing is perfect for me. I work out 1/2 hour a day, do strength training every other day and take the diet pill Accelis. I already feel thinner and more toned.
Nice job! Strength training can be so hard. Tommorow I want to go lift. I ran, mostly walked another hour today.
Funny thing though today. my mom gave me an electronic ab belt thingy today that my dad bought but never used. Inside the box was a bottle of Ab Energizer, containing Metabo Ephedra, which I think was banned. Then it was unbanned. Is ephedra really dangerous?

optimum's whey is pretty nice. you get a lot for your buck.
diet pills are basically tons of caffeine and stimulants. since ephedra can now only legally be sold as an anti-asthmatic, the diet pill companies have been working their asses off upping the other stimulants in their formulas to make up for it. i don't like 'em. they're legal speed. they're thermogenic, which means they invoke a shivering response, making you lose weight without working at it. and they speed up your heart rate, and make you tense and edgy...and then you CRASH. they're addictive, just like anything with caffeine. after a while you need more and more of them...they're just not the healthy way to get fit.
i do take carb blockers occasionally when i'm going to have some serious starch before bed (hey, nobody's perfect), but usually i just avoid carbs at night and do just protein and veggies. i've noticed a little improvement in the poundage since starting to take digestive enzymes before every meal, but i've been using them off and on for years. now i'm just getting more regular about it because, well...let me put it this way. cows have a vegan diet naturally, right? and cows have four stomachs and still fart some serious methane, right? i only have one stomach. you get the idea.
the biggest thing for me is working out. i've found that my muscles have memory. i was in GREAT shape in high school, when i was in water polo and karate. it's not hard for me to get back into shape, it's just that i have to stick with it. i can run for ten solid minutes at 5 and a half to 6 miles an hour, then do half an hour on the bike or elliptical, and a hundred crunches...and it doesn't kill me. i was never able to do that, even in high school. woot :)

I remember working at lowes in the summer of 2001 and i took the xenedrine. Which at the time had ephedra in it. I didnt workout at the time. I ate at mcdonalds everyday and lost 20 pds that summer.
I like to take things for energy before working out, which most still contain some weight loss help.
The closest thing now is hydroxicut hardcore. Even now at GNC they have it behind the counter and you have to ask for it. For some reason they are not allowed to display it now. Probably from customer complaints.
For me personally, Ephedra really didnt effect me at all (or i couldnt tell a big difference)..UNLESS i done absolutely nothing and just sat around. Then id be jumpin around or talking fast. I do remember some nights though when i took it to late in the evening and when i went to bed i'd just be shakin. I remember my heart racing so fast i couldnt even close my eyes.

I liked ephedra a LOT. That stuff works wonders. A little jittery for the first couple days, then all's fine. Cycle off after three weeks.
What was great was something Synthrax had called... called... I forget. It was awesome stuff; fat just melted away, and then they got sued and it hasn't been available for a few years.
There are some great fat burners out there, and, yeah, they do elevate the heart rate a bit, but I think they can be used properly for great effect.
As for me: I broke my diet yesterday and today. Not good. I went 24 hours without a cigarette, then folded. Still haven't lifted yet, which is the big key: building muscle causes more fat burning during rest, etc. I don't know what the problem is -- why I'm not lifting. Basically, once I do it, I'm really glad I'm doing it, and I know this; but the hard part is starting.
I'm at a kind of dangerous weight, because I don't look overweight, and it's easy to keep saying "I'll start tomorrow."

You can't spot-reduce; you have to lose overall bodyfat to lose a gut. And on most men and women, the gut is where a lot of fat percentage tends to settle, so it's usually the last fat to go. Sit ups will tone your abs so that, when the fat goes, your abs will show more, but sit ups in and of themselves won't specifically burn fat off the stomach.
Diet, exercise, and rest. Those things are the key.
Cocaine does wonders for the waist line.

im horrible with diet. im a bad, cooking-munching vegetarian. BUT i know about exercise.
a) all of you that want to do crunches or ab workouts -> DO NOT DO THEM EVERY DAY!!!!!!! you'll get much better results if you do them every other day. just like every other muscle group, if you work the abs every day, you'll end up hurting the muscle fibers instead of strengthening them. this is usually the case with every muscle group, and people know to exercise them on different days, etc. but i still see people doing crunches or ab workouts every day and thats just counter-intuitive. every other day helps you rebuild the fibers (stronger!) and it cuts down on the pain you feel.
b) i cant tell you enough how important bananas are for your body. they have a lot of (natural) sugar BUT when you're engaging in muscle toning and rebuilding, you need that potassium. sure, you could take a supplement, but eating a banana after your workout will take those nutrients straight to your muscles and really, anyone can deal with the 80 calories or so in a banana.
i dont know what else... ask questions.
Justin
05-22-2006, 08:59 AM
its important when you do cardio to make sure you work your ass off doing it! No half-assed workout!
That and stay with a workout for at least 4 weeks before changing it. Most of the time if you stay with the same exercise (running for more than one month) your body will adapt to it, making it harder to lose weight.

Bikram yoga has worked wonders for me. I seriously reccommend it if you can stand the heat. Talk to NLOL...he has done is as well. Men see quicker results but if you can stick it out 4 times a week, you will not only loose weight but it sculpts your body in all the right spots so you dont have to do spot training. My first week I lost 6lbs. granted a lot of it was water weight but the biggest result I have seen has been changes in my appetite. I no longer crave sweets or any bad foods like I used to.

I have always been worried about getting overweight because it runs in the family from my mum's side. One of my aunt's died because she weighed over 200 kilos. All her daughters are terribly overweight as well, quite a few of my aunts and both my sisters. I didn't start seriously gaining weight until losing my uterus. Once I visited a doctor who was offering some free advice for loosing weight and when I talked with some other women there they'd all put on a lot of weight after hysterectomy. Before that I put on less than a kilo a year (after turning 25). I definitively need to loose weight, not just because I can't find clothes that fit (never been a clothes horse anyway), but I'm more worried about my health. I never learned to excercise, but I do like to ride my bike. But even tho when I cycled to the city to work (about 20 km a day) I didn't lose any weight... And I really couldn't blame it on my diet either, except now that I get free food at work I maybe eat a bit more than needed. But I eat a lot of fruit as well and I work pretty hard these days.
I would love to lose 15-20 kilos tho.

isnt hula hooping good for hip/belly fat aswell?
Bikram yoga has worked wonders for me. I seriously reccommend it if you can stand the heat. Talk to NLOL...he has done is as well. Men see quicker results but if you can stick it out 4 times a week, you will not only loose weight but it sculpts your body in all the right spots so you dont have to do spot training. My first week I lost 6lbs. granted a lot of it was water weight but the biggest result I have seen has been changes in my appetite. I no longer crave sweets or any bad foods like I used to.

Those things are the key.
but i don't want to lose overall body fat, and i don't need to.

nah, stick to clear spirits if you can. rum, lots of sugar in it. well, i suppose that's the case with all alcohol. but yeah. no beer. beer is fat city.

tonight for dinner - a carrot, about 1/4 of a cucumber, 1/2 a tomato, a slice of edam cheese & an egg. also i've had a couple of handfuls of peanuts just before dinner. does anyone think i should add anything to that? remove anything from that? i'm not planning on eating that every night, but just as a guide. i'd usually have some lettuce too but ran out. hitting the weights soon cause this mornings was a pretty half arsed effort. i'm dedicated to the cause now, there's no stopping me. i'm even doing things like taking my coffee black with none instead of white + 2

I think you need to eat better stuff and more of it, just do more exercise. a cucumber, a tomato, a carrrot, a slice of cheese and an egg doesnt sound like dinner to me. Why not have some lean lamb or beef, with plenty of greens ie brocolli, peas, string beans etc? Protein + vitamins and minerals. I mean just cut out the snacking, thats what i gotta do. Then have a banana/apple for desert.

When I'm at home again, I will dust out the very impressive and expensive home gym I have that contains a smith machine, preacher curl bench, pull-up bar, ab roller, leg press, heavy bag, speed bag, wooden dummy, step machine, and bike. There are also two swimming pools in my apartment complex that will be open after memorial day. I'm not having a go at you, i mean whatever works for you. But you want to get used to eating the way that will keep you healthy long after you've lost the weight right? You dont want to lose the weight then one day lapse and gain it all back? Like i said, my main meals are fine, generally pretty healthy and I love brocolli and string beans and carrott, for me its all about the doritos and the soft drinks and the beer and the take away. I figure if I cut down on that, I'll lose enough weight to be healthy.

I've got a summer ball in July because I'm leaving sixth form college (boo hoo?).
Sssssooo:
Current - 9st 8oz
Target - 8st 10oz
I think I can manage that if I cut down on the fromage frais. Dramatically.
Cut out about 500 calories a day. Sounds like a lot, but that can be 2 sodas, or a couple of snack bags of chips and so forth.
Eat smaller portions 6 times a day instead of 3 big meals a day.
Snack on nuts instead of chips. Almonds, pistacchios, walnuts, things of that sort.
And swim for about 30 minutes a day. Not splish splash swim, but actual laps. Its probably the best excercise for you as far as losing weight and toning up is concerned.
Do this and I can almost gaurantee that you will lose a pound or two a week. And get in good shape.
Chuch.

Rock's right about the eat-many-small meals thing. You want to eat a bit every two to three hours. When you skip meals, your body starts breaking down muscle tissue to provide energy for the body; then when you do eat again, it stores what it can as fat, because it's in starvation mode. That's why so many people who diet just to lose weight 9without exercising or eating properly) wind up looking kind of hollowed out -- they lose weight, yeah, but it's mostly muscle, and they've actually gained fat. Just wanted to add my mini-story:
I was always really thin. 110 pounds, a stick really. I then moved to DC, and my metabolism slowed way down (I've always eaten nothing but crap) and went up to 138, which for my height, is a lot. That was mainly a mix of things: being unable to work out due to a lung problem + eating nothing but crap. I seriously would eat pizza at least 3 times a week, and I'm talking 75% of a medium pizza, each time. Then stuff like pop-tarts, mac-n-cheese, etc.
Once I was better (lungs) I worked out again but nothing was really going away because my eating habits were still super bad. I also kept getting sick a lot and I snapped and decided that I need to make a change, otherwise I will be unhealthy all my life.
So, I replaced the usual snacks with fruits and veggies (carrots, broccoli, etc with dip), ate whole wheat bread instead of the white breads, and just kept stuff like pizza in moderation (once to twice a month, vs 3 times a week haha). I still have junk at least once a week (maybe a slice of cake or something). I also exercise at LEAST three times a week, cardio 30 mins and then I work with weights as well, alternative which area of the body I use (i.e. monday: arms tuesday: back wednesday: legs, etc).
So I was 138, then when I exercised without changing the eating habits I was 134. Now that I am doing exercise AND eating more balanced meals, I am now 122.
I feel better, I haven't gotten sick in a long time (6 months now I think), I look better, just, everything is better. Also, after eating what your body needs you start craving them more so than the junk. And if you don't eat the junk, you feel sick. I cannot really explain it but believe me, you'll thank yourself for it.
Hope this helps someone maybe a little.

What's your motivation for wanting to lose weight?
All the years I've been running/going to the gym and watching people, I think it's safe to say that most of them can lose weight fairly easily when they're motivated. But usually the motivation is fleeting: a guy/girl, a wedding dress, summer clothes, a reunion. To me, the true challenge is not losing weight but keeping at a healthy weight consistently, after you've met your goal. That should be part of your plan now--doing something that will get to your desired weight and help you to stay there.
The ones who are short-term goal-oriented might work for 6-8 months to lose a whole bunch of weight--then they'll stop exercising and start eating badly again and they'll put the weight on again in like a couple of months. The ones who do it seasonally or for an occasion are mostly the ones who 1) complain about it lots and 2) who seem to battle themselves constantly.
I'd say this: aim to do something that you can and want to do now AND for the rest of your life. It's really just a way of life and you have to be moderately consistent about it. Try to eat better (cut out or cut back on junk, including alcohol and cigarettes); try to eat more meals, smaller ones; get target-range cardio 5 times a week and build to doing that for 45-60 minutes each time; do some sort of strengthening work at least 3x/week. When you reach a healthy weight, shift things around wrt diet and exercise, but don't stop. Just make it part of your life.

I've got a fat back. seriously.
My legs are good cos I walk 5-8 miles 5 mornings a week (postman) and the weight I carry (5-6 x 20Kg bags for 5-8 miles - 5 x a week) has made my shoulders, upper back and arms bigger and toned.
However, it's the middle bit that needs a good kicking. In particular, the sides of my lower back. that's putting 2-4 inches onto my jean size.
I tried crunches etc but no result so I pretty much resigned myself to living with it.

BollocksCrunches will firm the muscle beneath the fat but they won't do anything to reduce the fat. I guess unless you do them so quickly that you get your heartrate up and sustain it for a long period.
To get rid of the fat, you have to reduce calories and get like 45-60 minutes of cardio (in your target heartrange) and do that several times a week.
You can't spot reduce either. The love-handley fat might be the very last bits of fat to go (or maybe they'll be the first--it's random although there are theories about queuing order wrt to fat reduction).

Last summer when I was working in a shrimp factory in Greenland I lost more than 10 kilos (22+ pounds) in about eight weeks.
About a week into this gig I started eating only once a day- dinner. No breakfast, lunch, sweets, sodas or anything like that. I didn't exercise but work was sometimes pretty physical.
I've managed to keep those pounds off since. In fact I've probably slimmed some more.

05-29-2006, 12:20 PM
Well of course you just can't leave us like that! What did you do?
Ate less, excersized more.
A majority of it was through diet. In the last few months I've been going to the gym 5-6 days a week. I either do 45 minutes on the elliptical machine or an aerobics class. I throw a little weight training in there too. As far as diet, I figured out how many calories I was eating a week to maintain my current weight. I thought, well if one pound equals 3,500 calories, I'll just subtract how many pounds I want to lose in calories from what I was eating to maintain and I've got to lose weight.

like beth said, breastfeeing is the best... i believe it contracts the womb as well as helping using extra calories.
as for firming up tummy, i'd suggest pilates exercsies for strenghtening the muscles and then situps... but not for a while. i had a few sessions with a personal trainer, which did wonders. she was very inspiring ( i can give you her no. if you like ;)). i wouldn't rush it tho! unless you want to, of course...

i ate like complete crap this weekend - telling myself, hey, it's my birthday, i can go wild! and ooooh i am feeling it. i felt like garbage all yesterday, and my jeans were definitely tight. that's one thing i hate about my metabolism - i can lose weight pretty quickly if i work at it, but i gain weight a LOT faster. i hadn't been in the gym for the last week because my workout buddy's been not so well, and i was taking care of him at home. but this week, i am going to kick this ass back into swimsuit shape. fuck! my friends want to go to the beach this weekend! it sucks when you think, damn, i've gotten skinny! and all your friends are still thinner than you are :\
and yeah, ruggs has accomplished so much. she did it the right way, too. too many people look for the easy way out - diet pills etc. - and i think that you don't appreciate it enough when you do it that way. i'm way prouder of my body now that i know i worked to get it this way than i would be if i popped hydroxycut all the livelong day.

I can't wait to keep this up for a little while if only to see a few pounds of difference on the scale (I know your weight fluctuates day to day, but you know what I mean). Once I see that I think I will be even more modivated.

Awesome. Beer is a toughie for me too. Right now I'm not really dieting, just running an hour a day. Try not to weigh yourself too often. I'm doing it every three weeks. You don't really lose anything the first two weeks anyway, so whats the point right? Just try to enjoy running.

yeah, I'm in no way a scale freak, I just wanted to get an idea of where I was getting started at, and it was like6 more pounds than I thought (but the scales at the gym are wonky and a bit hard to read also).
I'm going to start reserving drinking only for occassions of going out to the bar (maybe once a week) or a party (once every few weeks), instead of having a beer at least every other day. So many empty calories.

I'm doing it too! I've cut out soda pop....it's only water and occasionally gatorade now. I really need to cut out beer.A woman at my work weighed what I'd guess to be 350# at maybe 5'10 and it was that very sort of loose rolling fat.
She lost about 100#, she said, by taking a walk at lunch and by reducing the amount of beer and soda that she drank. I think when she was about 50# into that weight loss, she got revved about that and started eating a little better. She took off another 50# or so through exercise and better eating. No diet plans. In fact, she says that she's never really dieted, per se, but that mostly, she stopped eating shit foods and she stopped bringing in coolers with her own supply of candy bars. (She used to do that every day--bring a fresh supply of chocolate--and she was kind of open about that, not at all shamed by it.)
She's kept the weight off for maybe 5 years and for the last year or so, she's been coming to my gym and working with a personal trainer. She's still overweight, but you would not even think to look twice at her whereas before, people would stop and watch her. Amazing difference, really, and totally cool that she's kept the weight off. (Because my observation is that people can lose weight easily enough when they're motivated to do so, but if the motivation is fleeting, the weight comes back on. Keeping it off is usually harder than taking it off.)

I read an article in a magazine last month and was surprised to see how many calories are in common bar drinks. I know a couple of people who go out after work at least 2-3 times a week and judging from what they say they're ordering, they're drinking about 1500 calories each time they go to the bars.
examples in calories, alcohol drinks
pina colada: 275
rum & coke: 350
margarita: 350-500
5oz Bailey's lrish Cream: 468
12oz long island iced tea: 500-700
examples in calories, non-alcoholic drinks:
16oz Starbucks caffe mocha with low-fat milk: 320
venti Starbucks strawberries & creme frappuccino: 780
power-sized Jamba Juice, strawberries wild smoothie: 560
large Dunkin' Donuts coolatta: 820
large Baskin-Robbins chocolate milkshake: 1,130
I also read this study:
Stealth Calories
In one study by Mattes, people were asked to consume 450 calories' worth of jelly beans every day for four weeks and 450 calories' worth of soda every day for another four weeks.(1) On days they ate the jelly beans, the participants compensated by eating roughly 450 fewer calories of others foods. So they ingested no more calories than usual.
But on days they drank the soda, the participants didn't compensate. They ended up eating roughly 450 more calories than usual.
"Liquid calories don't trip our satiety mechanisms," says Mattes. "They just don't register."

i had 4 bologna sandwiches today
i don't drink pop, unless there's alcohol in it (i'm more worried about diabetes then getting fat, though). i normally use orange juice as a mix
i'm 183 centimeters, and 65 kilograms, so i could stand to gain a few kg. skatebarding, snowboarding, and working out probably help my health, cause eating like i do definately doesn't. i have to start being a lot more healthy in what i eat.
"They say you are what you eat, so I strive to be healthy
my goal in life is not to be rich or wealthy
cause true wealth comes from good health, and wise ways
we got to start taking better care of ourselves" - Dead Prez

I've cut tons of calories by not putting toppings and condiments on food. It's amazing how much food people actually eat compared to the food they realize they eat. Also, getting the no sugar added options whenever it's available cuts calories big time.

i think its mostly from the fact that i have actually been fairly active with running and riding and just going out and moving. my metabolism is already kicking itself up which is great.
i think the only think intake wise thats changed is that i really havent had an alcoholic drink lately, and i have been drinking so much water that its unbelievable

aye, jesus, that alcohol thing enree posted was scary! I can't drink that shit anymore. Today my eating wasn't very good...blah. It's not like I had McDonalds or something, I just ate more than I should have.
But a bunch of friends and I got together to watch a movie and I made myself a little sandwich to eat so I wouldn't eat all the cookies they brought. It's the little things like that that help a lot...

Also, getting the no sugar added options whenever it's available cuts calories big time.I have a friend who is trying, she says, very hard to lose weight. I don't believe it, though, because when I spend time with her, the shit she eats. Anyway, I bought a little notepad and pen for her to write everything down because of hidden calories and fat and all. So she did it for about a day  because that's how much time were spending together after I gave her the notebook. So she had three cookies and estimated them to be 40 calories each. I don't think anything is 40 calories but maybe gross diabetic stuff. They were really something like 200 calories each. Big underestimate on her part and she does that a lot. I don't really want to think what she ate calories-wise when she went to a fund-raiser strawberry-fest last week.
So people, mostly at my work, will be like, how can I get/stay in shape? And I'll say, eat less and exercise more. It sounds so flippant or mean to say that, but there are no miracles, no wonder diets that'll keep the weight off long-term. It's just dilligence and discipline. And now I'm off to the gym when I really wanted to sleep because these last few days have been very trying.

That's just so great! It's not about a diet--I think that word is shit. It's about just watching and limiting, being aware, and doing that long-term. And exercising. At least that's what works for me.
I've found that as I get older, I have to work harder to keep what I have and even harder if I want to build an area.

alcohol is HUGE. However there are some drinks that aren't all that bad.
Diet coke + rum is what I always get. It's fine (I forget the stats on it) and gets me toasty without packing on a billion calories.
I never realized how bad most drinks were until I started reading up on all these things.

Yeah, it was really nice to be able to resist temptation like that. Although, I didn't even really want the cookies, but if I had been hungry obviously that would have been different.
It's hard because I have a close friend who is very overweight and I know she absolutely hates it. She talks sometimes about wanting to lose it but she's never really tried...she's big enough that if she did cut out things like soda, snack foods, etc., I'm sure she'd see an immediate difference. But I think a lot of it is that she lives at home and her mom cooks a lot of high-caloric meals (her mom is also overweight). Also whenever we go to play soccer in the park, which we do once or twice a week, she has bad knees and she gets exhausted very easily. It's just hard because I really want to be like "hey let's do this together!", but it feels like I'm criticizing her or something.

^ she probably needs someone to motivate her since she isnt getting that from home. Its so much easier when you have someone to work out with...
I do the 6am yoga classes 4 times a week...this morning my friend and I got there and the instructor never showed. There were like 25 yogis standing on the street like, um ok. So we went running instead...her idea. If I went alone...I would have just went home and went back to bed.

If you really want to get rid of cellulite eliminate toxins from your diet as much as you can. Toxins are in practically everything we eat. You could eat organic fruit and veggies, olive oil, raw nuts, etc, and have only filtered water. Eh forget it.

I see people at the gym who HATE being there. They drag themselves in every damn day and they lament every damn minute that they're there and they are vocal about it and their every move screams misery and loathing. I think that they might be doing their body a wee bit of good but what damage are they doing to their spirit and the rest of themselves.
Other thing: some people exercise and care about what they eat do it not to have a great body. Those overtly physical benefits are just side effects for me.
Last thing, not everyone is doing starvation. I don't eat as much as a lot of you guys do and I don't drink at all. I don't think I need as many calories as a lot of you do--I'm twice the age of some of you and generally, both caloric needs and metabolism slow as you get older. I think that's why a lot of people start packing on the weight big time in their 30s and 40s--they're still eating like they were in their 20s AND they've slowed down their pace/activity level.

I can't tell you how many pounds I've lost because I don't believe in the scale. When you exercise, you build muscle and muscle is denser and heavier than fat.
A scale that measures body fat is great for that. I use only one scale and weigh myself at the same time when I do use it (the scale). That way, everything is consistent. When I go to the doctor's office and get weighed, I throw that number away. Her scale tends to be 5# lighter than mine anyway. My ob/gyn's scale seems to be on par with mine, but I still throw her number away and just use my own scale.
My weight fluctuates by 10# if I'm training for a distance race because of the added muscle.

okay, this is the first time i've posted here cos i find talking about losing weight second only to money worries in the boredom stakes, but i figure if i put it down it'll make it more, i dunno, concrete. and the whole online weight watchers thang!
so i've decided to lose some weight. i have to, apparently, as the BMI thingie tells me i am slightly overweight!! yikes. also, dr gillian mckeith is scaring me into thinking i'm going to develop diabetes and drop down dead before i'm 30. and i have a premiere to go to in october. so yeah.
i agree with enree; it's not rocket science. eat less and exercise more. everything in moderation. so that's what i'm doing. i make sure i get my 5 portions of fruit/veg a day and have a sensible dinner - if i feel like pasta, i'll make it, just in a smaller portion (i developed a nasty habit of having boyfriend-sized portions when i went to uni). i'll become grumpy and miserable if i think of food in terms of "good" and "bad". i always fill half my plate up with salad and, for example, today i had a wee portion of tortilla. twas aiiight.
i've signed up for a yoga/pilates combo type class on monday evenings, and i am swimming 4 times a week - 30 lengths a day. it's quite cool going swimming after work actually; a gentle workout and very stress relieving. i'm working my way up to the big girl's gym next week.
i'm about 9 days into "it" (although i will say it hopefully will be a permanent lifestyle change) and i've already lost 2lbs! go team.

i'll be content at around 160-165 consistent. i haven't done shit except ride hard 6 miles a day and be on my feet for 8 hrs a day, steady.

So mornings are really where it's at for me . . .so for all you morning worker-outers, is there anything you do to make it easier to get out of bed? Any small incentive....aside from feeling awesome from the work out.
The hardest thing is just getting up.
I'm usually awake before the alarm goes off -- 2:00 - 3:00 a.m., depending on whether the next day is lifting or just biking -- but that's because I make myself go to bed on time. People know how late they can call me, and I keep to that by shutting off my phone about 30-60 minutes before I go to bed. Otherwise, I get into a conversation and then my mind's too active for me to sleep.
But it's so much better to do the exercising in the morning. With no food in the stomach, it's the best time for fat-burning; also, nothing has interrupted or derailed my mood or motivation or whatever, so I exercise and it's out of the way. Otherwise, it's too easy to decide after work "the heck with it -- I'm not going to lift today; I'll make it up."

Ive basically been the same size for the past 6 years
its fall and none of my pants fit
I can only do like 2 pairs of them up and by that I mean squeeze myself into them and be entirely uncomfortable
I even broke down and bought two new bigger pairs because I couldnt realistically lose enough weight to fit into all my old pairs within a month or so
this is ridiculous
I need to stop being depressed or Im not going to be able to reverse this shit

how many laps are you doing and how often are you going?

you, my friend, will never have love handles.
thats not true.
I was about 125 lbs about 5 years ago. I looked like i had AIDS or some shit. Like seriously skinny.
Now I'm at 150 lbs....and like 75% of that 20 lbs went to my midsection. I blame the wife...not my laziness.
It can happen.
(!)
I'm not you.
but it can still happen.
alot of you older boys are smaller than me
i'm hitting just past 180 pounds at the moment. ok thanks.
but it can still happen.
Very true.
*waits*
you, my friend.

I don't know how old Tal is, but... yeah; it's not uncommon for skinny guys with cranked up metabolisms to hit their mid-twenties or early thrities and all the sudden the metabolism is just gone. It's funny to see someone who looked anorexic for years and "couldn't gain weight," and now it's a few years later and they're all rounded and such.
Kind of funny. Sort of.
But that's not Tal. :)

I'm 33½ on Saturday. And by looking at the male specimens in my family for many generations back I've come to the conclusion that I'm not gonna get fat.
Hi Natalie!
You go yoga!

you just described me. except im not round.....well...maybe in the tum tum area.
But I started skating again and have been getting my exercise on (just push ups pull ups sit ups and jumping rope) so hopefully in 3 or 4 months ill be all like...non bellified and shit. I just wish there was an indoor pool nearby. That would be heaven.

Good luck with it.
I'm, like, *this* close from getting a membership at the city's college gym, for the pool, if nothing else. It's, like, $30/month. That's pretty affordable.

I was doing really well then stopped caring for two months and now I'm starting to care again.
I think of it like this though, since a lot of it is also diet... anything that I eat or drink should be beneficial to my body. If I'm eating a lot of junk I'm basically using my body in as a landfill. If that makes sense.*
*exception is alcohol because I'm a lush and I'm still going to drink it, damn it.
As far as the exercise part, I notice that even when I really don't want to do it if I just push myself to do it... I ALWAYS feel great afterward. It's a pick me up (y)
I don't know if this helps :/

7am is late man! I am up at 5am....
I replaced the yoga with swimming and so far it's ok...I am going to a park district pool so I have to wear a cheesy bathing cap, but it's free and there is no one there in the morning. Hey Cosmo...when you started to see results where and what were they? Arms? Abs?

Yeah I hear you. The way I'm built, my stomach is pretty much always a pain in the ass and rarely changes, and that's what I want most to improve so it gets so frustrating.
Do you at least feel better overall (regardless of changes)? I was also told once that after a few months the body gets used to a routine and you have to change what you are doing a bit. Something like if you've only been running try cycling for a bit instead and that kind of thing.

well, it's not really about "feeling better overall" it's about looking better.

hmm not sure what's available to you but maybe saving a bit to go to a professional would be helpful. Even if it's just one session of personal training and going over a diet plan or something, maybe they have some nugget of info that will kick start the changes.
I really wish they weren't so expensive, because I'd do that myself right now if I could.
A friend of mine is getting a trainer though, I'll bug her for info :)
