jeff buckley's version of 'hallelujah' is on the radio right now and god, it's a great song. it also reminds me of happier, nostalgic times when my flatmate (http://www.thecinematics.net) used to sing it at open mic nights at uni. yes, his voice is that good.

Bridge Over Troubled Water makes my eyes well up every time, but in a good way. The purity of Art Garfunkel's voiceis just amazing. Fantastic song.

Also, there are a number of Beethoven compositions that I found so moving when I put on headphones and just listen to them intently that I almost cry. Such incredible passion and precision.

i can hold my tears back on that one, but when El Condor Pasa (If I Could) comes right after, just like on the album, it gets too much. damn Peru. they got the feeling over there. such a beautiful song.

how could i forget....: Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire". that song can make me weep on the sunniest day. it has that power. even if i go to bed feeling happy, and then listen to it, i'll most definitely cry. everything gets black-and-white and i feel empty.

Bruce is pretty awesome.

i'm sure i'd love it. i have a weakness for his voice.

from age 6 and several years over i always cried when i heard "Without You" with Mariah Carey, and i was very ashamed of it. my sister played it quite often, and i always pretended to have "something in the eyes" whenever i heard it.

i can't liiiiive if living is without yoooouuu... i can't liiiiive, i can't give anymooooore...

i even cried when i heard RHCP's "Wet Sand".

ohhh you don't form in the wet sand
you don't form at all
wooahh you don't form in the wet sand
I DO, yeeeeaaaahhhh

i'm such a wissy, hahaha.

oooh some good choices there guys, good choices. got me weeping into my cuppa already.

the eva cassidy version of "somewhere over the rainbow" is a tearjerker, too. i was at a family outdoors ice skating festive christmas thing at, er, christmas, and that came on. i was like "WTF god there's KIDDIES here!" as i slumped to the floor in a crumpled, soggy heap.

also the mary j. blige & u2 version of "one" [maybe i just have a thing for cover versions!]. the way her voice sounds is just so heartwrenching. "did i ask too much, more than a lot? / you gave me nothing, now it's all i got / we're one but we're not the same.." yikes, mary, give me a break!

gee: not having watched the oc before apart from to catch brief glimpses of seth cohen, i haven't seen said episode but i'm sure it was a real gut-wrencher!

good thread miss. I made one similar quite a while ago.

Alot of Smashing Pumpkins songs do it for me, just Billy Corgan's guitar work alone can do it. Why did he go in the direction that he did? My god, what a waste.

-Chili Peppers, I could have lied
-Chili Peppers, Breaking a Girl

I agree. Also Nick Cave - Into My Arms

'I don't believe in an interventionist god
But I know, darling, that you do.
And if I did, I would kneel down and ask him
Not to intervene when it came to you.
Oh, not to touch a hair on your head,
Leave you as you are,
If he felt he had to direct you,
To direct you into my arms...'

I always get a really sad feeling when I hear Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay by Otis Redding. I don't know why, but I heard it for the first time when I was a toddler and even then it made me go quiet and feel sad.

Only song that really made me cry instantly was 'ready for love' by India Arie. Near the end she does this thing with her voice that gives me goosebumps and brings me to tears.

And the past 2/3 months pretty much every song about breakups made me sad. I couldnt even listen to 'Who love's the sun' anymore, and it was my fave VU song.

"Who loves the sun,
Who cares that it makes plants grow
Who cares what it does
Since you broke my heart" :(

heh this thread spawned a real live conversation about musical moments in the oc, like when ryan is running up the stairs on nye at the stroke of midnight to kiss marissa and that 'dices' song is playing; and when seth and summer are slow dancing to a ryan adams version of 'wonderwall'; and when anna is at the airport and some nada surf song comes on...shame. i'm a 14 yr old girl.

Vincent (by Don Maclean)

When I was very young, I remember my parents listening to "Honey" repeatedly in the car and I was upset by the lyrics. It was about a man (husband?) reminiscing about his love (wife?), who had died. I remember being absolutely stricken by that concept as a little kid.

Same with another song called "Patches." I don't remember much about it other than the fact that I cried each time I heard it. My brother and sister would sing part of the refrain just to make me well up. "Patches, I'm depending on you son, to pull the family through. My son, it's all left up to you." I was such a sucker for shit like that and I suppose I still am.

I don't know why, but I heard it for the first time when I was a toddler and even then it made me go quiet and feel sad.I don't know, I kind of find that to be a relaxing summertime, breezy kind of a song. It doesn't make me sad.

So much of it is how you met a song, you know?

There's a group of songs that I used to play for my kid (on tape) when we'd drive to the beach. He calls them Summer Songs and associates them with good times even though not all of them have a cheery motif.

These songs, under the right circumstances and/or influence of alcohol might work:

The Tracks Of My Tears by Smokey Robinson
Handle With Care by King Floyd who remains the most underacknowledged soul singer ever
The Ghost Of What Should've Been by Owen
Angeles by Elliot Smith
Jesus, Etc by Wilco
Juanita by Gram Parsons or Sheryl Crow and Emmylou Harris' cover of it which isn't as abysmal as you might think
Dead Flowers by The Stones
That's How Strong My Love Is by Otis Redding or The Stones' version
Girl From The North Country by Bob Dylan, the revisited version with Johnny Cash mostly
Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley
In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning by Frank Sinatra

Has anybody heard 'hope theres someone' by antony and the johnsons?

It cuts me up every single time.

Heres the lyrics but you really need to listen to it....

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, will I go

Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I'm tired

There's a ghost on the horizon
When I go to bed
How can I fall asleep at night
How will I rest my head

Oh I'm scared of the middle place
Between light and nowhere
I don't want to be the one
Left in there, left in there

There's a man on the horizon
Wish that I'd go to bed
If I fall to his feet tonight
Will allow rest my head

So here's hoping I will not drown
Or paralyze in light
And godsend I don't want to go
To the seal's watershed

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, Will I go

Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I'm tired.

So here's hoping I will not drown
Or paralyze in light
And godsend I don't want to go
To the seal's watershed

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, Will I go

Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I'm tired.

I like Roland Gift's That's How Strong my Love Is.

There's a Sheryl Crow song that can make me cry called Crash and Burn

I wrote a letter that I never mailed
I rehearsed a dialogue in my head
In case you ever want to track me down
I'll take my cell phone to bed

And it's laughter that I hear when I close my eyes
And it's one more punchline I forgot to learn
I call you up when my bottle's dry
I'm on my way to crash and burn

There are a couple that have come up recently. I can't think of them right now.

Mad World is one that someone already said, also maybe Damien Rice's The Blowers Daughter. Mother Love Bone - Chloe Dancer.

I know, mine are obvious.

God, I wish I could think of those others.

Hurt...I think listening to the lyrics about all his friends gone sounded more then just leaving but more as if he's the last living person...I think it has something to do with the fact that it was Johnny's last great song he made...and I am not even a big Cash fan...I mean, song sounds more like a personal "End of the World" kind of song.

Gratitude -beastie boysHow the heck is that song "sad"? =/ For petes' sake, that bass sound would more make you bang your head and jump up and down.

Bridge Over Troubled Water makes my eyes well up every time, but in a good way. The purity of Art Garfunkel's voiceis just amazing. I was thinking just about this today when I was at work and feeling blue!! (and listening to Nick Cave)

Nick Cave - Into my arms

I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

And I don't believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that's true
But if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk, like Christ, in grace and love
And guide you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

And I believe in Love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candlew burning
And make her journey bright and pure
That she will keep returning
Always and evermore

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

and more Nick Cave

I've felt you coming girl, as you drew near
I knew you'd find me, cause I longed you here
Are you my desitiny? Is this how you'll appear?
Wrapped in a coat with tears in your eyes?
Well take that coat babe, and throw it on the floor
Are you the one that I've been waiting for?

As you've been moving surely toward me
My soul has comforted and assured me
That in time my heart it will reward me
And that all will be revealed
So I've sat and I've watched an ice-age thaw
Are you the one that I've been waiting for?

Out of sorrow entire worlds have been built
Out of longing great wonders have been willed
They're only little tears, darling, let them spill
And lay your head upon my shoulder
Outside my window the world has gone to war
Are you the one that I've been waiting for?

O we will know, won't we?
The stars will explode in the sky
O but they don't, do they?
Stars have their moment and then they die

There's a man who spoke wonders though I've never met him
He said, "He who seeks finds and who knocks will be let in"
I think of you in motion and just how close you are getting
And how every little thing anticipates you
All down my veins my heart-strings call
Are you the one that I've been waiting for?

I still can't find one that is as gutting as Dusty Springfield's version of Anyone Who Had A Heart. (http://www.zshare.net/audio/533725335756972b/) Many artists have done their own version of this song but you can really feel the soul in Dusty's voice more than anyone else's. (Shelby Lynne's version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuaHN1p8F9E) coming in a close second.) Even the break after the 1:30 mark hits pretty hard. The arrangement reminds me of Portishead in the best possible way.

This song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--WQ7Ga33gY) also. It's embarassing to type who sings it. And now it's getting out of hand. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nopBvlKfYgY) I think that if you can overlook the presentation and focus on the lyrical content instead of the accents you'll agree. Did I mention I'm from the south? Yeah, that's my excuse...
