i thought i'd tell a story, complete with photos. not a good story, mind you.

i'm hoping others will do the same. different story though, obviously.

so, you all remember my car, right? i always wondered what that rectangular thing (circled) is for. today, i found out.

the car died on the side of the florida turnpike as the dr and i were driving to meet my family for dinner. so, i called the ex mr. beth and he called a tow truck. ironically, i broke down very close to the ex mr. beth's work. anyway, the guy flipped the rectangle down and then screwed this thing into it. "this thing" being the technical term.

there's the thing he screwed in, which he then hooked a cable to so that my car could be pulled up on the flatbed.

here's the baby being pulled onto the flatbed.

the car is now ready to go to the dealership the ex mr. beth works at.

the driver was really cool. apparently, he moonlights as a tow truck driver when he's not busy being a pirate.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Bethofcourse/9.jpg
proof. the sticker says something about demanding booty.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Bethofcourse/11.jpg
the ex mr. beth paid the pirate and had him leave the car at his work so that it can be fixed on monday. yes, the ex mr. beth (not pictured) and the good dr (left, wearing the most kick ass shirt ever) were too close for my comfort.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Bethofcourse/12.jpg
the ex mr. beth then went and got his car^ and gave it to me so that i could drive myself and the good dr home. don't worry, he has another vehicle back at his house. it was very, very nice of the ex mr. beth to give me his car to drive, and to pay for the tow truck (under the terms of our divorce agreement, he makes all payments and pays for all upkeep on the car, but still, it was really nice of him).

Was it the fuel pump? My 5 died on the L.I.E. at 91K. Fuel Pump.

why does he have to pay for your car?

it's part of our divorce agreement that he pays for it until the car is paid off. at that point, it becomes my problem. still, he didn't have to loan me one of his cars, but he did.

at this point, rich, i don't know for sure what's wrong with it, but it seems to be something with the alternator. the battery light came on, then the abs light, the brake light, the light for when you don't have traction on the road, and some other light. then the radio volume went down, i shut off the a/c and then i lost all the gauges in the dash. finally, the car started to slow down even though i had the pedal to the floor. :(

he sorta does look like he's wearing a beret like the mythbuster's guy. but no, he's just a regular pirate.

I too always wondered about the little plastic rectangle found on car bumpers. Finally, the truth is out.

.

that happened to me. then the transmision broke too. still, it's less expensive to fix all that shit than to get a new car. but im carless now.

Beth, is there any way the alloys on that Golf could mysteriously get stolen and shipped to the UK? They're much nicer than the alloys on my Golf:)

that would be because it's a GTI -- i think it's supposed to be a faster / sportier golf, thus the better wheels.

if i could figure out how to get him to pay for shipping... :) kidding!

so, the car is still being worked on, but he also went and bought me new cupholders for the car and a new car charger / lighter socket. bmw cupholders are the shittiest cupholders known to man. and i've no idea how the socket thing broke. he also said he may need to buy me a couple of new tires, but he won't know until the car's on the lift tomorrow.

now THAT'S a nice dude. didn't bitch once about how i didn't get the tires rotated. ever.

Mine's a GTI too, but for some reason those particular wheels were an extra cost option. VW have a bizarre selection of optional extras in Europe, including a choice of 4 or 5 different sizes and styles of alloy wheel.

I'm actually waiting for delivery of some Audi RS6 replica wheels for mine.
