paint the picture on how it was like when each of the albums came out, like if they were in the media a lot or how the media talked about them, if their music got played a bunch on the radio, or a lot of apperances, or if their album was what everybody were talking about.:D

i didnt listen to the beasties til 99 when Alive was released (due to very strict parents, only country and christian music(n) )

anyways..

for TT5B everyone was very excited. I remember a short download of ch-check it out (like a few seconds or something).

I also remember alot of people on here already having the album before it 'officially' came out, including me. I was driving around thinkin i was the coolest kid on the block. However, I was the first at the big music location in charleston wv to buy the album. I went in the night before the release and begged and pleaded they sell it to me early. Which they did.

I dunno why i done that. I just felt that i was the biggest fan and that i "HAD" to be the first to buy it there.

To be honest with you and everyone here, I was more excited about them going on tour than I was with the new album coming out.

I think it was when Hello Nasty came out that was when everyone started going, "Wow. The Beastie Boys have been around for a LONG time. Let's celebrate!" And that's when they got the MTV Video Vanguard Award, and the Beastieography special came out, and then the next year, they released Sounds Of Science. It all had to do with people realizing that the 20th Century was almost over, and yet the Beasties were STILL around.

With To The 5 Boroughs, it was a little different, at least to me it was. Half the media was like, "The Beastie Boys are not dead! They're still going strong!" While the other half was like, "The Beastie Boys are OLD! Shouldn't they be called The Beastie OLD MEN now?!?!?! LOL2004!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111"

OMG, that's the most stupid affirmance I've ever heard

They are 40, and so what??! They can still do rap. Awsome, unique rap. Nobody can step into their shoes and that's the only true. I hate when somebody says that TT5B might be their last album. I hope BB will never stop. (y)

fRESH rHYMES was what it was all about....for all rappers.
It used to be about the sneakers, graffitti, beats, b-boy stances, dj's, girlies, (and boys for the fe-males). "always on time, never perfect gramma"!!

Now HIP HOP is all about who makes more Benjamins, Blings, Cars and Video Hoe's....commercial, sell out sucka M.C's...

....as for the Beasties that's why most say that are OLD scHool....they keep it real, and been around for a looonng time, but StiLL FRESH!!. Like AdRock said, "Think I'm Gonna Change Up My Style Just To Fit In???"

During LTI, PB, CYH the internet didn't really exist...so MTV, radio stations, and the Library is where I got my info.

The internet was around for IC...but not really a source of info.

I think MTV has always embraced them and given some good info. There was a lot of hype after LTI hit it big. There was some decent promotion just as PB hit the streets but it quickly disappeared. CYH, IC, and HN were all promoted pretty well and there was a good buzz in the air.

I'll give MTV credit. They did promote To The 5 Boroughs pretty good which surprised me since the Beasties aren't the typical rappers that appear on that channel. "Ch-Check It Out" and "Triple Trouble" were in regular rotation. They did that $2 Bill concert. They performed at the 2004 MTV Movie Awards and appeared at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards. They appeared on an episode of Direct Effect. Kudos to MTV for their promotion of To The 5 Boroughs, which is something I don't say often.

When LTI came out rap and hip hop was new to the general public, and white people were starting to listen. The Beasties helped bring hip hop to those audiences. The album was really really big, and controversial. The beasties were all over the media. Probably more so then than ever.

When Paul's Boutique people were expecting another LTI and everything sort of deflated when the album dropped. Hey Ladies got a decent amount of video and radio play but nothing like Fight for Your Right, etc. I think most people were dissapointed at that time. Also, disco was had not yet had its resurgence. In most parts of the country in 1989, Disco was about the most uncool thing you could think of. The Beasties were just ahead of their time on that whole album and people didn't get it.

When CYH came out, I think people were surprised at how good it was. The Beasties were playing instruments, So What Cha Want was a really big hit and so was Pass the Mic. The Beasties were the epitome of fresh at that point and it seemed like everybody wanted to be like them. They had broad appeal and really hit a vein with underground culture. I think a lot of people bought that album for the rap and then the other stuff grew on them.

Ill Com was almost like a repeat of CYH except people knew what to expect that time around and the Beasties just carried the momentum. Also, somewhere in between CYH and Ill Com people started to revisit Paul's Boutique and appreciate it more. By that time, disco had come back as a retro thing. There was a ton of hype surrounding Sabotage. That video got played way too much. It was Sabotage, "Heart Shaped Box" by Nirvana and "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden. They just constantly rotated those in the summer of 94. I never want to hear or see Black Hole Sun again.

Hello Nasty was a little like Paul's. Everyone was expecting more CYH and Ill Com and they changed up the style. There was a ton of press because of all the anticipation and I think that's why you had all the specials and whatnot. The Beastie's image seemed to change from being the coolest motherfuckers on earth to the wierdest motherfuckers on earth. I kind of like that though.

Here's a question: at what point did the Beasties videos stop being played on MTV's hip hop shows? Because, even when Check Your Head came out, "Pass The Mic" was being played on Yo! MTV Raps. And yet, nothing from To The 5 Boroughs was ever played on MTV's rap shows ("Triple Trouble" was played alot on MTV's rock show though for some unknown reason).

^Yeah I know! I saw Right Right Now Now on the Rock countdown and I was like "what the fuck?!" I mean yeah, it don't get more rock then that. To The Five Boroughs is an all HIP HOP album! But when it comes to the Hip Hop shows they fuck it up just the same so I guess it's ok. Like on that MTV2 Hip Hop Platinum Club show they played SABOTAGE! Yeah, it don't get more Hip Hop then that. Sorry, that just confused me.

Anyway, thanks for that Sir SkratchaLot I wasn't around either, and I was always curious. Also I remember Ch Check It Out got played A LOT! Good thread Denise. (y)

** brace yourself cuz this is really long!!!

^ i heard from friends that had MTV in the TT5B time period that MTV had the beastie boys all over the channel, promoting it a lot and playing their videos more than other artists. I didn't have MTV in 2004 so i never heard about the beasties all i saw were these commercials on (regular)T.V promoting their album all the time and it got annoying. I didn't know who the beastie boys were in that time. (i seriously thought they were an old alternative rock band:eek: )

and i only remember hearing ch-check it out on the Ellen DeGeneres Show back when she had that looky-loo screen thingy and I didn't know that song was from the beastie boys. (cuz i had no idea about the b-boys!)

the commercial was kinda funny it was them running around i think in the subway or something and a guy who would say "the Beastie Boys are back"
and i forgot the rest but it was played a lot here in L.A (a lot of Capitol Records artist get promoted a lot here)

it wasn't untill i was partnered with my friend in Science class that they were mentioned again and he is a punker/skater actualy he is the only friend of mine who isn't baller, but anyways i asked him what kinda of music he listens too and he said "oh the beastie boys are alright" and i said "the beastie boys!?" he said "yea they're the only white rappers beside eminem" i didn't know that they were rappers. So i was a little confused. i didn't say anything. and we started talking about something else and i forgot all about it.

during August of 2005 my brother had borrowed his friend's b-boy albums to upload them to his computer and he played Brass Monkey a lot and i knew that it was a beastie boy song but i didn't pay much attention

then not untill a couple of months ago like in November 05' my TiVo had recorded a re-run episode of "Saturday Night Live"in 1998 and the musical guest were the beastie boys. they performed 3MC's and 1 Dj and i was amazed. my brother walked in and saw it was had an expression of wow! the beastie boys on t.v? anyways that performance got me hooked and i looked them up on the internet and it turns out my brother had CYH, IC, and HN in his computer(which he gave to me) and got hooked also cuz they were pretty handsome guys:p :o , I instantly got a crush on AdRock when i saw his SNL skit. then i went to Target one night with my brother and i went to see if they had any b-boy albums and i saw LTI and SGH i bought both. (at this time i didn't know anything about LTI, i didn't know how big this album was or how crazy it was)
(btw it was the last copy of LTI in the store)

then i heard ch-check it out on the SGH cd and I remember going "his song is by them?!" cuz i remember hearing it.

and pretty much through the internet and you guys i learned a lot about the beastie boys and they are now my favorite group, and i have all of their albums except oddly enough TT5B:D

yea the commercial made me annoyed at them cuz it was played so much!
Since Capitol Records is based in Los Angeles their artist are promoted a lot here.

if u drive through Sunset blvd or hollywood and highland you are almost guaranteed to see a Capitol artist promotion like posters or billboards.

the commercial i think is the Ch-Check it Out (Just Blaze) video but i'm not sure but the background guy had an annoying voice that i just despised.
the commercial went something like this

"the beastie boys are back after six years with a new album, to the boroughs"

the commercial was 2 years ago so i don't remember much

btw srry for making u read all that michelle!:p

Hey, really cool story on how you have gotten to this point! I love hearing how youngsters get into our Boys.

And I forget who (someone in this thread) actually broke each album realease feeling/anticipation in the music world down, but I agree with all of it. And I could live without Black Hole Sun as well. lol

In 1986 I was 6 yo, and rap was almost unknown in Switzerland.
I mean, I don't really remember 1986 but in 1991 (the year I bought Apocalypse '91..., my first rap cd) people looked at me with huge eyes when I said I liked rap. They didn't know what it was...

ggirlballa- very interesting story.

I was born in 83, so I was really little when LTI came out. My sister watched mtv all the time so I grew up listening to really great groups and I didn't know who they were. My dad has me on tape singing "Fight for your Right" when I was 6.

Fast forward to 1994. I really liked watching Beavis and Butthead. One day "So Whatcha Want" comes on as a video they were parodying. I was diggin the video but Butthead changed channels so I couldn't see who the singers were.

The next year I was at summer camp, and Sabotage came on and everybody liked it. I thought it was the shit but I never bothered to see who the singers were.

Now its 1998, and Intergalactic is on TV and I think to myself "I have to buy this record." Its the first CD I remember really waiting to buy. I go online, and realize that the Beastie Boys did all these great songs I heard growing up. There are and always will be fantastic.
