Being unable to resolve the server means it is unable to convert the textual server hostname (irc.landoleet.org) into the IP address (204.11.104.230). Probably because your DNS (Domains Name Service) is down.

Use /server 204.11.104.230:6667 and see if that helps.

There is an input line at the bottom of the screen, where you'd type messages if you were connected. the "/server" command stated above will tell it to connect to that server. Then in the same input line "/j #beastieboys" will tell it to join the #beastieboys channel, where we are.

Having moved chat rooms, a contingent of the IRC crew have decided that we are no-longer tied to an inferior server, and as such have upped sticks and created a new channel.

What was wrong with the old one?

The old cockos server (irc.landoleet.org) was, as we say in the business, "shit". It lacked even the most basic of security features, leaving anyone talking on it wide open to all kinds of abuse. Anyone could pretend to be anyone else without any come back, seriously hampering both network security and privacy for starters. Without chanserv, there was nothing to prevent a channel takeover except the goodwill of a handful of people. The was no support to prevent harrassment from other chat-users or hackers.

So, we have emmigrated to greener pastures. For those mIRC users who are interested, we can now be found in #beastieboys on irc.xelium.net.

use "/server irc.xelium.net" to connect to the server.
"/server -m irc.xelium.net" will do the same, but with a new status window so that you can be on two servers simultaneously.

Once on the server, use "/nick <username>" to select your desired (and unregistered, tough luck if someone has already grabbed it) username.

Then use "/nickserv register <password> <e-mail address>" to register that username to you.

From then on, "/nickserv identify <password>" will log you into that nickname, allowing you to be auto-opped by the network, as well as a heap of other useful commands.

As always, "/join #beastieboys" will connect to the channel, and as always, you do NOT use the quotation (") marks when inputting the commands specified.

#bboys on irc.landoleet.org is now closed, and people will only be there to remind people to join the new server.

Howso? Miho can't stand Lex and was going to leave IRC altogether anyway because of him. I just suggested that a lot of people would miss him, and that I wouldn't be hanging around on IRC if he left, etc. So we decided to setup a channel without Lex, and do so on a server which has decent IRC functionality and support for administrators.

There is nothing more to it than that. If people want to talk to us, the details are there. If they do not, the alternative is listed, and I even explained clearly how people can be in both simultaneously, which several are doing.

It's isn't a big war or anything, just a simple choice. People can pick one, the other or both.

Speaking of "lame" - I was amused to see that Turd had attempted an incredibly feeble attempt at a channel take-over, having been put up to it by Lex. A quick post-mortem shows that at precisely the same time Turd was trying to add (incorrect) ban-masks, and lock the channel, surprise surprise, Damaja got auto-kick-banned!

I don't know which is sadder, that Lex *still* desperately craves our attention after a month of being "sent to Coventry" due to being an obnoxious loser, or the fact that even when a flunky was consciously *given* operator status, and the channel was completely empty without anyone to watchover it, the keys to the kingdom so to speak, they were both still totally unable to be even a minor irritation!

So, for those who criticised our moving to Xelium, I would just like to tell people on the "original" (hah) server the following:

If *I* were as juvenile as Lex, you would currently have *no* channel, and unlike us on Xelium, *you* would have NO WAY OF GETTING IT BACK AGAIN. So, Icey, Randee, Tal, and the other cockos people - just be greatful that the contingent which emmigrated aren't devoid of social skills.

Oh, and Lex, if you persist in attempting ban-evasions, we *will* see about getting you black-listed from xelium, as well as blacklisted from BTO. Believe me when I say they take breaches of the computer misuse act quite seriously, and they do keep a list of blocked users which they pool with other ISPs. I have personally known nuissance users get dropped from their dial-up ISPs (in the good old days) get dropped, and become unable to find a replacement ISP that will take them.

The only reason there is an "us and them" split is because some people are emotionally blackmailing users into picking sides, when (as I have consistantly pointed out) it is quite easy to join both servers and channels automatically.

So far, "us" (as in only available on xelium) is me, Miho and Zorra.

"Them" (as in only available on cockos) is TAL, Lex, Randetica and Iceygirl. Turd is banned from our channel on xelium after attempting the failed take-over.

People who have frequented both are: Fucktop, Zippo, Planetary, Sobaviolence, Jabumbo, Assmang, Planetary and Padster.

As I am not on cockos, I can't say who talks on what server most.
