I'm not sure what a student budget would be like, but when I visited NY I stayed at Hotel QT, which is right in the middle of Manhattan, a short walk from Times Square (but not so close that you could hear Times Square).

I would highly recommend it, review here:

the qt looks really good, kinda bboys minimalist stylish, but it's admittedly over our capacities moneywise, might you be able to get us a good price, like you know one of the staff-birds?:)

No, my girlfriend bought us a trip to NYC for my birthday last year. It was a package thing with flights and hotel altogether.
It's worth trying to stretch your budget as hotels in NY aren't cheap at all.

Actually I just read the review myself, and it says that
students qualify for a discount there.

I stayed in the Lexington last year: check here! (http://www.lexingtonhotelnyc.com/iflash.html)

But I guess, you should just check out expedia.com (http://www.expedia.com).
They've got really good offers in all categories and
it all worked out fine last year for me...

P.S.: Can I come, too? :o

Chrisd --

Be very, very careful about staying in any hotels in NYC that are TOO cheap. You can get rolled in those spots. (n)

Oh yeah, you are right. I forgot to warn you about a hotel
called "Carter Hotel" It really sucked. My parents and me
had to stay there years ago ('86), when our flight (Pakistan
Airlines) had been cancelled because of a broken windshield
or something. And the taxidriver told us, that a guy jumped
off that hotel some days before (we were not surprised when
we finally arrived at the hotel). They had cockroaches, no
bedsheets or towels, but water running down from the
ceilings (which involved wet tp)

But I don't know if that hotel still exist. If so, don't go there!

For Hotels in Manhatten, you're not going to get much lower than $200 for anything decent. Last time I went, I stayed at the Sheraton on seventh and fifty-first. It's really nice and walking distance to Times Square, Rockefeller Center. I think it was about 200/night (I could be wrong though).
