Baby Born With Third Arm

SHANGHAI, China -- Doctors in Shanghai on Tuesday were considering surgery options for a 2-month-old boy born with an unusually well-formed third arm.

Neither of the boy's two left arms is fully functional and tests have so far been unable to determine which was more developed, said Dr. Chen Bochang, head of the orthopedics department at Shanghai Children's Medical Center.

"His case is quite peculiar. We have no record of any child with such a complete third arm," Chen said in a telephone interview.

The boy, identified only as "Jie-jie," also was born with just one kidney and may have problems that could lead to curvature of the spine, local media reports said. Jie-jie cried when either of his left arms was touched, but smiled and responded normally to other stimuli, the reports said.

Chen said doctors hoped to work out a plan for surgery, but the boy's small size made it impossible to perform certain tests that would help them prepare.

Media reports said other children have been reported born with additional arms and legs, but in those cases it was clear what limb was more developed.

Chen's hospital is one of China's most experienced in dealing with unusual birth defects, including separating conjoined twins.

I don't know, if all 3 arms are fully functional in the long run, there's already a vast world in the music industry for him.

Excellent drummer, bongo player or double necked guitar.

I keep envisioning that character that Rachel Dratch plays on SNL. The one with the weird baby arm poking out of her head.

And it was surgically removed shortly after birth, too.

That character has only been on a few times, I think. She made a brief appearance in this season's finale. She sort of gurgled and drooled a lot.

Rachel Dratch is great. (I googled images of her to try to find the thalidomide baby character or whatever it's called. Couldn't find one but saw some photos of RD where she looks so much better than she does on the show.)

...did anybody else here see Gattaca?

I'm currently reading about it. I googled it. Seems very interesting so far.

Gattaca deals with a future where it is possible genetically engineer all these "defects" out of newborn children. Not only can you as parent request that your children will not one day be afflicted by any debilitating heart diseases or other illnesses, you can also specify that they not suffer from any other "defects" - such as the tendency to fall prey to depression, acts of violence, "suffer" from homosexuality, etc.

hehe, the sound "jie-jie" means penis in cantonese. that's what a few of Hong Kong chicks told me, anyway.

...great movie. Anyway, there's a pianist in a throwaway scene who's playing a concert, and the piece is something like "Concerto for 12 Fingers." Sure enough, the guy's been bred with six digits per hand. At the end of the concert, he pulls off his six-fingered white glove and tosses it to a fan. If I remember right -- it's part of the fabric of the world rather than an essential moment of plot or something. But it's a great touch.
