Everyone knows that you have to start with the coastal states.
The only one that I really messed up was Delaware. I seriously don't know a thing about Delaware except that it's a small state somewhere in the NE.
And as for that European one, I can't be bothered to learn about the former soviet states. :p

I meant "NE" as in northeast. :p But now that you mention it, I did try to put it in new england. That never would have happened if they had given me some real new england states first.
As for the European map, I still can't get over that Holland and Denmark are different countries. When I was a kid, I was sure they were just alternative names for the same place.

I'm good at the states that border Canada (since I am one) and most of the coastal states are easy. But it's that damn stuff in the smack middle that makes it complicated.
Someone should find the Canadian version and see how the Americans do. :p
Texas is easy to identify and it would swallow your puny country.
The only one that I really messed up was Delaware.
It is the 1st state and they have a plagiarist as a Senator.

I bet 99% of the board wouldnt've been able to name more than 3 states of Australia. Secondly, I bet at least 10% would've thought that seeing we are "upside down", north is south and east is west ;)
On second thoughts, maybe a "place the city" flash game would be better...

In the second one (http://www.cafepress.com/amprosoft.41947602) the New Zealandander rebels take the North Island and then they do a surprise attack thing starting in Melborne.
In the futurefiction NZ & Australia had the right conditions for revolution. Indiginous populations with ancient wisdom, outdoorsy people who didn't care to be converted into shoping automatons for McWal-Mart and such. With a corresponding revolution going on in France/Belgium/Germany and in Greece. All over. Anyplace on the map that Rupert Murdock & FoxNews(Newscorp) has labeled communist. So basically everywhere.

I concur. It is more a test of your ability to judge relative distances than knowledge of where states actually are, in that you can know the first state is "about thereish in the middle" and be very close, but wrong, and it is hardly your fault when there are no visual clues to give you an idea precisely how far from the coast it has to be. Knowing where the states are, and precisely what %age of the map they are from the coast or nearest marks on the map are two different things.
So, I personally absolve any American who scores poorly in this from feelings of stupidity or insecurity. I am sure there are a lot better reasons for you to feel inferior.

Did you know Rupert Murdoch used to be quite a left wing journalist back in Australia? He even wrote to expose the stolen generation and a few other highly politically sensitive issues. Strange what money and power does to morals. And ourdoorsy types? We are the second most obese nation in the world after you guys :(
