Mr. Poon told my homeboy that Yauch is currently directing a graffiti movie! Huh? What?

I kinda heard the same thing a while back.

Yeah...here's what Yauch said in an interview a couple of months back:

ThePhoenix.com: Is there a project that you have right now?

Adam Yauch: Yeah, a screenplay that I wrote with a friend of mine that I’m figuring out how to get made.

ThePhoenix.com: Can you say a little about it?

Adam Yauch: Yeah, it’s about graffiti writers. It’s set in New York in 1981, and it’s kinda like when the MTA shut down the graf scene in New York. I think it’s an interesting period of time that hasn’t really been explored, and a real piece of American history that’s pretty amazing that hasn’t really been seriously dealt [with], and it’s a piece of American history that really influenced people the world over, and really influenced modern culture. You know, so anyway, it’s something that I grew up around, so I’m interested in it.

wow...
being a writer myself for more than 15 years, i can only say it's about time that someone does a decent graff movie. of course, i'm very glad that yauch is the one to do it because he proved himself many times... i just hope he doesn't fuck it up...
good luck with your project, adam...

check this out:

it interests me that this was written 5/6 motnhs ago, so it could have well been mentioned already, but i'd never seen it. for those who that can't be bothered to check out the link:

Hey everyone!

It's been a while. I just wanted to write and say hi and let you know what's been going on. Since last year my acting career has been steadily picking up speed. I've put one theatre production, 3 student films, a Dorito's commercial audition (and the called back), and 3 industry showcases under my belt.

It's good to know I'm not just spinning my wheels with no results! and I'm meeting a lot great and interesting people along the way.

The highlight though has actually been in the last couple of weeks. I have been considered for the lead in a feature film that will pay $1,000/week (Shooting is two months starting in March '06). It's titled "Of Toys & Kings". It's about an artistic and talented 17 year-old named Mark Edmonds (no joke!) who becomes part of the graffiti scene in 1981 Brooklyn. And to top it off, the writer/director is Adam Yauch
of the Beastie Boys!

On Tuesday I was called back to the second round of auditions and got to meet him in person. The audition went very well. It was like we all were happy to be there and had a good time. He even checked out the sketchbook of graffiti tags and the backpack with whiteout marker tags I made especially for this audition. He was really impressed and took a line from the script by saying "I really dig yer character's, man!" which made us all laugh. It was GREAT.

The casting agency told me that they have auditioned more people since then and a third round of callbacks will be next week on Wednesday. I should know by Monday at the latest if I've made it to the third round. FINGERS CROSSED!

I've also been studying a lot of movies with Netflix. I can't believe I've
missed out on all these great movies like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "On the Waterfront", and "Network" and "Dog Day Afternoon"! (BUT FIGHT CLUB & CITIZEN KANE WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST MOVIES EVER MADE)

So that's what I've been up to. I hope you all are doing well. I wish you
all the VERY best & Happy Holidays!

Hit me back and let me know what you all are up to! Take care!

I wonder if he got the part...

that's very interesting and all-round great news, I look forward to hearing more about it, hopefully the movie turns out to be good. I don't think Yauch would write anything lame and having grown up with it, it seems as though he would treat it with seriousness and respect. Good stuff.

The research skills of some Beastie fans never fails to amaze me. Why we haven't collectively found a cure for cancer yet is beyond me.

Beasties doin the Soundtrack (like a concept record) would be beyond dope. I was mad indifferent to this project, but I watched 'Wildstyle' yesterday, and am now quite excitable. In a general sense.

You know half the marketing of the film will be, "MCA from the Beastie Boys wrote and directed a movie! Ch-Check it out!"

Yeah, it better not be.

I'd like to see a non-Hornblower effort, and more an Adam Yauch film.

I wonder if this going to be an indie-type film. Smaller budget with a limited release.

I think this probably more of a creative outlet/side-project for versus a "let's try and make a lot of $$$"

Well, when "Lost Angels" and "Roadside Prophets" came out, how much of the marketing was on "Adrock from the Beastie Boys is in this movie! Go see Adrock! GO SEE ADROCK!"

I think that's what it will be, and it sounds like it'll be indie... maybe a wider release than AIFST for example though. It's gonna be interesting to see how he handles the change form music vid director to feature film director but I think he definitely has skill, so it'll be interesting to see.

A soundtrack by the three of them would be great too, instrumental presumably, but awesome nevertheless.

The more I think about the soundtrack, the more I can see them writing character-based lyrics like Paul's (but obviously, not just like Paul's). Or making tracks just using turntables and disco breaks, and making the crowd say "Hooooooo!". They could put Bambaatta and Bad Brains on the soundtrack, and proabably in the film. Think about the setting.

Imagine if Horovitz got a cameo as the owner of a Deli.

holy turtle, i've repeatedly dreamt about this for over a year now. can't believe it. and now it will be reality. if i ever see this movie and some scenes are like the ones i've seen in my head, i'll be more than stunned. actually, i already am.

I think we were just s[eculating about the soundtrack. The tone of the movie sounds pretty serious and not lighthearted so I don't think they'd rap on the soundtrack. I'm thinking something more like instrumental hip-hop, which would be pretty cool for them to do I reckon. Or even something like The In Sound tracks but a bit darker.

We'll see, this whole thing, if it comes into being, sounds pretty cool :)

10 out of 12 tracks on The In Sound From way Out can be found on Ill Communication or Check Your Head...

its 1981, I would expect some old school Hip Hop

Yeah, word. They'd play the part musically like Em in 8 Mile.

I can't wait til this movie! I have a feeling it's gonna be very good. I don't know a whole lot about graffiti, but it is very interesting to me. And yeah, I think it should be Adam Yauch who directed it, Nathaniel Hornblower is more of a Beastie Boys thing anyway. But I do like the sound of a Hip Hop instrumental soundtrack. Anything would be cool, I'm really excited for this. (y)
