Last thing I knew of was the "best of/live CD" set.

I think 'Dry the Rain' was a modern classic, and a song I'll be listening to for years and years to come.

I got into the Beta Band just from watching High Fidelity.

Miss them too. (n)

I think that's how most folks probably heard of 'em. Can you imagine being in a band that a pretty cool mainstream movie features in such a blatantly promotional way? Talk about your fucking product placement!

Then, in a bar scene later -- I don't remember if it's the proposal or the "did you sleep with him yet?" scene -- the song is playing on the jukebox AGAIN.

Man -- Cucack and co. were adamant. :D

did any of you check out the king biscuit time and the aliens links that i put up earlier in this thread. in case i didnt make myself clear...king biscuit time is steve mason...ie the singer from the beta band. and the aliens is the new band by the drummer and one of the other members. names escape me. but anyway, instead of moping around...have a listen. i quite like it.

I looked at one link but firgured they were just some other bands out there in the ether. I'll check them out when I'm at work tomorrow. Thanks! (y)

I knew the plan was to do side projects after the split, but I never heard anything else. They're letting BetaBand.com just peter out. The site's still there, but the boards are down, news isn't updated, etc.

I totally fell for the Beta Band when I saw the video for Dry the rain. When they were mentioned in High Fidelity I yi-haa'd in the cinema!
So miss them! Luckily I had a chance to see them live once, they were absolutely great! (I have a very soft spot for Scottish anyway).
I get updates on King Bisquit as well and what I understood so Steve is gonna give up music completely now. We'll see how long that lasts...

Steve's back, apparently just needed a bit of time off. Hopefully his tour that was cancelled will be rescheduled soon.
I've seen king biscuit time twice, first in bristol, then supporting I am kloot. although not a patch on beta band, much more low key there's still some tunes though CIAM15, kwangchow, tears dry, izzium...
The aliens are John and Robyn from beta band +lone pigeon (he was original member of the beta band in 97 ish) Not got anything of there's yet but I know the video for robot man was on yourtube

I wasn't too impressed with it (got it yesterday). Its definitely good, but it started off sooo good, and then kind of mellowed out too much for my tastes.

Then again I was never a huge Beta Band fan in the first place. I recognize the talent, but it just wasn't my cup of lipton.

I've got Tago Mago, Ege Bayamasi, and Future Days.

Yeah -- I'm late to the game on these guys. We used to make fun of prog rock folks in my record store days, and I never really gave Can a listen, because I thought they would just sound like the other prog I had heard. I feel stupid now.

Halleluhah (sp?) is great. I love Vitamin C, Paperhouse, Future Days, Spoon, I'm So Green, Bel Air, Mushroom -- I just love this stuff.

i just heard "dry the rain" and im very interested in hearing more..

what album / cd would you recommend a newbie to the beta band start with?

Kinda depends on what you want.

They stayed kind of trippy, but started incorporating more pop and rock on later albums. It was a great affect for the most part -- they
became sort of a trip-hop Beach Boys, in a way -- but they were a jammier band on their three EPs. I think The Three EPs is pretty great,
but there's a big old sound collage called "Monolith" that some people can't abide.

Of the studio albums, I'd probably go

Hot Shots 2 - strange, affecting pop; quite a bit of downtempo

The Three EPs - trance, trip-hop, odd experiments; the great stuff is some of the best they ever did, though

Heroes to Zeros - trying like hell to have a hit, they turned out a great rock album that still incorporates some weirdness. Even the song
where they try to sound like U2 winds up working

The album called The Beta Band has some okay stuff on it, but it's not that hot.

One Joe's opinion.

Cool, cheers.

I dunno if this is sacrilege but im thinking of starting with their greatest hits/best of package....

Ordinarily I'd say that you'll just wind up buying everything all over again, but at least if you get this, you've got the live stuff on disc two. (y)

By the way -- if you've got any decent used music stores around there, you might find the stuff really cheap. Especially
Heroes to Zeros -- a lot of people tossed that one right back, which is kinda sad.
