View Full Version : how reliable is craigslist?
for apartment hunting, not dating/prostitution
i'm using it as my main resource for looking for places in boston, it seems almost too good to be true. tons of new listings every day, a good range of prices, and the descriptions of the places are pretty detailed. my only question is, how much can i trust it? it seems like just anybody could post any old thing. obviously i'll be visiting the places before i rent them, but how honest can i expect the ads to be? there's so many of them and lots of them seem almost too good to be true.
you guys, i trust

It's great. That's how i found my new place.
Sure, you've gotta check it out in person. To save time, I only considered ads which included pictures.
Basically, it's free classified advertising, so lots of savvy people are using it instead of paying $40 for three lines in a newspaper with no photo.

It rocks in the SF Bay Area. I hear they're getting better in NYC, Boston, and LA markets.
cool, good to hear positive testimony. it just seems so useful. i mean literally, i'll check the listings on the first page at the beginning of the day, click about a dozen or so, come back later in the afternoon and there are almost no clicked links on the first page. i don't know what i'd do without this, quite honestly.
does anyone know how fast these things move? like do i have to jump on them immediately, or can i afford to sit back and consider my options for a few days before contacting people?

Don't know about apartments, but I've bought tickets to sporting events off of craig's and it went off without a hitch.

That all depends. Ettiquette says that people posting should remove things after they're snatched up, but that often doesn't happen.
Also, with the anonymity, every now and then you'll have a no-show; one realtor never met up with me, and a guy selling a bike failed, too. But the success rate is high enough that I go back. My new apartment is fantastic, cheaper (in a more expensive area), and much better than my old one. (y)

craigslist is great for apartments... dont know about the Boston scene, but I have found no-fee apartments every time I needed a new pad...
i found an 8 week sublease in the summer of 2003, and then I signed a two year lease at my next place for no fee...
also good for jobs, gigs, classified and for sale items (sporting and concert tickets)...
not good for dating, it seems every creep comes out of the woodwork on craigslist...
SF was where it started, so it is strongest there... but every major city in America is on the bandwagon now...
good luck

Dating... I got pretty creeped out at the library one time when two awfully scruffy are-they-homeless? dudes were loudly shopping for a trannie to share. All these patrons at all these computers, and they were absolutely unashamed. Pretty disgusting.

its reliable. my sister got her appartment in boston through it and all of her roomates. granted she didnt like any of them, but that's not craiglist's fault. she never had any problems with the actual appartment hunting/roomate finding part.
how come everyone who leaves uconn goes straight to boston?

I've always found criagslist ads to be very accurate and honest. I suppose because it's a message board and they aren't getting charged to place an add per line so they are very detailed. I've seen people even be so honest as to say things like: "this is a 420 household, if that's not ok with you don't apply" stuff like that.
I've always had great luck with craigslist (and I even met the real craig once. nice dude.). in fact I'm currently waiting on a craiglister to call me back about a bed they are selling. if they do...I might be sleeping in a new bed tonight!

I thought my niece was going to have trouble getting a new apartment, due to the small size of the city she lives in, her limited budget, and her rodent, but she found the perfect place and roommate on craigslist. I saw her ad and it was pretty cute. My niece is so fab! :)

I'm grateful to you guys for recommending craigslist. My son is looking to buy a used car and there's a wealth of possibilities for that sort of thing on the local craigslist. So far, everyone's been friendly and reasonable, and the prices and cars are great. More than what we were expecting. Positive experiences all around.

Yeah -- you haven't quite lived until you've been on the quiet floor of a library hearing two guys shout
"You think he'll suck me while you do him!?"
"Her dude. He's a her!"
"It! It! -- wants twenty bucks."
"Haw haw haw haw...!"
" -- he does look good, though. Lookit that!"
I'm paraphrasing -- this was quite a while back -- but the inappropriate, unashamed content was more or less in that vein. (n)

Hah. This prompted me to go look at craigs list. I started looking at the "casual encounters" (not because I am interested, I just think they are funny).
This guy posted pictures of his very small penis..pierced...and I laughed a whole bunch.

its to show the vast majority of women what will make them orgasm!
I like how he points out its "Just for Sex!" even though he posted it in the casual section.

I also enjoy the fact that he says he can fuck for hours - sure that's great, but the woman won't give a shit if she can't feel anything in the first place.

yep, I moved twice while in DC and both times I used craigslist. My current job is thanks to craigslist. My ex found his job and the places he's lived from craigslist.
It works, yo.
Missed connections and casual encounters make for good entertainment as well. Best of Craigslist too.

this is probably going to take me to a whole new level of "are you SURE you're not gay?" but i don't think he's erect, it probably gets bigger than that.
he's got manboobs though so i wouldn't do him
oh yeah, and to give closure to the original post, i'm currently posting from my apartment that i found through craigslist, so i give it an A+
