and she wants to come over and talk to me and stuff.
i'm really really really bad at this. like terrible. i just sit there going "yeah" and being quiet.
what do i say/do? i know this is pathetic, but i am really useless at dealing with this kind of caper.

Um, just listen to her and give her sympathy and if she says something that is relevant to your life experiences, give her your opinion. Only if it's not negative, because it's not what she wants to hear right now. And other than that, yeah, nod a lot. It's more important for her to talk and get things off her chest than for you to try to make her feel better, because talking is the first part of the healing process for her. (y)

Sitting there saying 'yeah' and being quiet is probably just what she needs. (and some chocolate)

Like the same friend, re-enacting the same guy-trouble scenarios that she has over/over and each time, the only thing that changes is the name of the guy. This one woman that I work with is a few years older than I am and she has guy troubles. Which is weird for someone in her 40s to be going on/on about guy stuff like that.
She knows better, she knows everything, but I guess the act of actually talking about it is what she needs. So I usually do a bobble head with her--I just nod and go "uh-huh" and "yeah" and "that sucks" and "that must have felt like crap" when what I really want to say is "you're being a fucking idiot" and "haven't we done this 100 times before?" and "isn't he WAY too young for you to even look at?" and "don't you think you're too old to wear a string bikini?" although that last bit has nothing to do with her guy problems.

You should tell her what you think. It would be the best thing to do in the long run.

You should tell her what you think. It would be the best thing to do in the long run.I know. But I have to work with this person and I understand how she'd be if I did that. But you're absolutely right in that it's the best thing for her in the long run. I'm just being incredibly selfish by avoiding the conflict. :o
edit: and also, there have been a couple of times in my life when I've been very honest and blatant with friends and it cost me the friendships, and that's somewhat affected the way I handle things like that. To a degree. Not that this woman is a terribly close friend, but I am just a little more cautious about how to deliver that sort of decree, you know?

I have a similar issue tonight and I'm dreading it. That's why I'm still on here instead of in my car. So I'll be late too.

Tell your friend to get over it. There's no shortage of people on this planet, and if she wants to waste time being hung up on one of them, more fool her.
