View Full Version : The Dandy Warhols
So, I got into this band earlier this year, then saw the "Dig!" documentary and became a fullblown fan.
I thought maybe it'd just be a phase and I'd get tired of them, but it's just not getting old. I can admit that their CDs have filler in them, but when they're good they're just amazing. I even went as far as getting their "lost" album and b-sides disc.
Anyone else a fan?

It's interesting that the movie made you more interested in the band. It had the opposite effect on me, but I don't know why exactly.
I dunno. I've always been into getting the "full experience" of a band, kind of getting drawn into their world. I randomly decided to get their first two albums used at Mediaplay (which was going out of business). Gradually getting into them and learning about the whole scene they were a part of just made it more exciting.

yeah, it made me dislike them even more. the Brian Jonestown Massacre weren't much better though. thankfully we got BRMC out of them.

There's about six really good songs on the banana album.

Seems like a lot of people are more interested in Brian Jonestown Massacre as a result of the movie. That's even more surprising to me because they looked miserable in the movie.
It's not fair to either band probably, but I really hated that movie.

I thought the movie was great. an interesting comparison of the contrasting fortunes of two bands. it didnt pander to either band and the end result was that both came out looking like dicks. those on stage fights the Brian Jonestown Massacre had were awesome.

^^ Yeah, that's what I expected to see, but I guess I don't think of the Dandy Warhols as being all that successful -- not enough to make a movie about their relative stardom.
I also wanted some recognition within the movie that they were all a bunch of silly, stupid kids. I couldn't swallow the guy from Brian Jonestown Massacre as a misunderstood genius, but then I've never gotten the Jim Morrison hero worship thing either. :p It would have been a better movie if he was dead like Morrison though.
I should say that before I returned the movie to Netflix, I listened to a tiny part of the commentary with the Dandy Warhols and they came across much better on the commentary than within the movie. I just wasn't interested enough to spend another 1.5 hours on it.

that Bohemian Like You song was massive thanks to Vodafone. they're a pretty big band. it's unlikely that you're going to get such a great basic narrative and comparison with someone like U2.
the characters of both bands really made the film. all of them are completely pretentious, full of themselves and are constantly rattling off bullshit, and because of this the film itself didn't need to make any editorial statement telling you that these guys aren't actually genius but just real dicks.
I like the Dandys and all but their most recent CD was such a turd I threw it away after one listen.

Agreed man. Even as a fan that CD sucked. Three good tracks as far as I'm concerned - "Everyone is Totally Insane", "Down Like Disco", and "Holdin' Me Up."

I went to see Brian Jonestown Massacre last week when they played here in London and I have to admit I wasn't overly impressed. I had only seen the film and not really heard anything by them, but my friend recommended them to me and I thought why not, so I went along. It was ok, not my cup of tea. They were all fucked off their faces and the 'tension' between the band seemed so contrived and fake, I thought it was ridiculous. I don't know, I was feeling a bit ill so not sure I was in the best frame of mind to listen to them. Musically, yes, they seem quite talented by 12 minute songs start to sound slightly self-indulgent to me.
Whoever said that about BRMC though, I have to agree - they are awesome.
