View Full Version : why do people commit crimes in the marvel universe?
in the marvel comics universe, new york city is swarming with superheroes. why do people commit crimes when there's characters like spider-man and the punisher and the fantastic 4 (i think they're in NY, i can't remember) lurking around? it's like a giant panopticon, they could be watching you at any moment. why bother trying?

If you were the Mole Man, what else would you do besides be a criminal?
i'd probably work on my autobiography

I imagine it's kind of like jaywalking -- you just assume that the cops have better things to do. And they can't be everywhere.

Or ToucanSpam keeps posting on BBMB.
Because then if no crimes happened, then the superheroes would be out of work, and then you couldn't make comics and films about them.
it's funny you should mention that because originally i was going to suggest that they make a comic about that exact situation, but i looked back and decided it was a boring thing to say, so i edited it out of my post.
good point though

How come superheroes don't hang out in smaller cities? There's a hell of a lot they could be doing in, say, Oakland.

yeah, really. the superhero market in NYC has got to be saturated by now.
that's a correct way of using the term "market saturation" right? i don't know, i'm not a business major.

If there stopped being enough crime for them to keep busy the same thing would happen to the superheroes as has happened to the A Team.

To some.
"Superhero" is such a relative term. I'm sure The Riddler doesn't think of Batman as a "Superhero." Probably more like "Anti-choice."

it's a situation where you could be under surveillance at any time, but there's no way for you to know whether or not you actually are at any given time. i think it refers specifically to a prison, but you can use it when it applies to any situation, i think.
i first heard of it from a foucault essay, but i think bentham might have brought it up first. not sure though.
basically it's a big impressive word that i learned in freshman year of college that i like to drop every chance i get

the first thing i thought when i read that first post was, "Bob just wanted to use 'panopticon.'"
i was right, apparently.
i think a better question is why do people in the marvel universe have no problem dressing like a figure skater and making up dipshit names for themselves while prancing around fighting gangs of dancing and prancing skateboarding/tagging/urban ballet/clown/greaser/mental patient criminals?

In "Watchmen" by Alan Moore it's theorized/shown
1 - Fetish
2 - Create an identity that isn't dependent on one person
3 - Reputation
4 - Penchant for flambouyancy
