i have been scanning these old 1951 issues of a local black weekly newspaper all morning, and the sports section covers pretty much nothing but boxing and basketball, with the occasional track or local college/high school story

stereotypically, black people are better at boxing and basketball, and i find it funny that this successful black publication focuses on those two sports

I scored the best Pro Evo goal ever with Eto'o for Barcelona the other day. I was just outside the box at the side and I stopped, pulled it back past a defender, then did a high arching shot over the keeper and into the far side netting. It was a fucking peach. (y)

what console you play on? my goal was a delicious little cross from joe cole, then michael owen rose like a salmon and scored a bullet header in the top left corner.

it's not racist because it was just an observation.
if you are assuming something because of your observation, than that is a different kettle of fish! (coincidentally, where did that phrase come from? wtf is a kettle of fish?)

i don't have vast experience of 1950s black cultural experience in america but i would assume that those sports are featured more prominently because they were the sports that most people of colour had access to and would be exposed to in their daily lives - you don't have to be a member of the country club to play basketball. i would doubt many had the opportunity to do, uh, badminton or croquet or whatever. you report on what's happening.

i also doubt in 1950 the idea of these sports as being "stereotypical" had come into public opinion anyhoo.

I play Pro Evo 5 on PS2 whenever I go to my mate Andy or Jack's houses. I wanna buy a PS2 as soon as I get cash purely for that game. (y)

i have noticed recently a column titled "people in ghettos"

Did the article contain sentences like?---------------

Jane hid her head in embarrasment as her mom shamelessly committed the ghetto act of stuffing the restaurant's bread rolls, sugar packets, and silverware in her purse.

or

A TV Guide duct-taped to a 4 foot stick?! That's one hell of a ghetto remote control!

or

John's paranoia about triple-checking whether or not he's locked his car doors comes from his growing up in the ghetto. (this type of behavior could also be in the OCD thread)

You can also go here for some great ghetto prom photos---------

I especially like the Pacers fans with the random white guy leaning on his cane.

Do you suppose it has to do with who black sports heroes were at the time?

I don't know much about that specific year, but didn't the NBA get integrated at about that time? Perhaps that made basketball more interesting to blacks. Boxing's Joe Louis had retired by then, but it's another sport where blacks and whites competed on pretty equal terms. Blacks weren't fully integrated in the NFL till much later (and when I was a kid there were still stories about how blacks weren't good enough at understanding strategy to be QBs  ).

There's also the old theory that two poor kids can practice basketball with a ball, a hoop, and a slab of concrete, but you need a lot of people, clothes, equipment, and a special field to play football so that's harder to practice if you live in an apartment in the city.

jabumbo

just to note:

the basketball coverage is primarily local stuff like high schools, prominent colleges with majorly black teams

joe louis is mentioned in every issue

since i've made it to april, baseball has started to show up a little. its interesting because they don't really cover any team and don't really even cover black players prominently (although jackie robinson is mentioned a lot, but that is understandable)

That is 100% correct. For an educated guess, you hit it right on the head. Very well done!!(y)
