MCA IN THE HOUSE
Eagle-eyed readers may have noticed the lack of a Beastie Boys interview in an otherwise peerless Issue 06. But hey, that's trans-Atlantic communication for you. Consider this rectified with the publication of a brand spanking chit chat with Awesome director Adam Yauch, aka MCA on this here web site. Check it out right here right now

read the interview here, he mentions the message boards
http://www.littlewhitelies.co.uk/issue006/exclusives/int_mca.php

Adam Yauch

An Interview with Adam Yauch aka MCA aka Nathaniel Hornblower, director of the Beastie Boys movie Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That!

Words by Dan Brightmore

LWLies: What inspired you to shoot your 2004 Madison Square Garden concert from 50 points of view?

AY: I'd seen some concert footage that a kid had shot on his mobile phone and uploaded to our website. The low frame rate gave it a strobe effect that looked really cool. It had a lot of energy so I just wanted to expand that idea.

LWLies: How did you choose the 50 camera operators?

AY: We posted on the message boards of our site asking for volunteers who already had tickets, and we looked at the Garden's seating chart so we could position the cameras evenly around the venue.

LWLies: How long did the post-production process take and what problems did you encounter?

AY: It took nearly a year to put together. Editing was intense. In many ways it's much harder having so many options from the 50 plus cameras because it forces you to exhaust every possibility. With around 120 hours of footage it's a painstaking but fun process re-living the night many times, trying to find the best combinations of shots to recreate the aura of the live experience. The main technical difficulty was synching the camera footage. Besides DV cameras and surveillance film from the venue, we used 45 Hi8 cameras which all have their own varying motor speeds.

LWLies: How did you get the sound so thumping?

AY: It was recorded in multi-track and then mixed in surround later. Yeah, the bass is thumping.

LWLies: Are you happy with the results?

AY: Oh for sure. Awesome… has some of the positive aspects of a bootleg, like being very true to what it felt like in the room, without the downsides - bad sound quality and only being shot with one camera. I think what gives the film sincerity is that the people that shot it were feeling it.

LWLies: What's your favourite moment?

AY: I kinda like the part where Mike is dancing on the beach. It's a cinematic moment paired with the shots of a girl in the crowd who is dancing the same way. And I like the audience interaction on 'Intergalactic'.

LWLies: Did any of the operators turn in footage you couldn't get past the censors?

AY: No you got the worst of it! But there were several trips to the bathroom. We thought one was enough though.

LWLies: The film is scheduled for release in the UK at 50 venues and billed as a digital extravaganza. Did you do the same in the States? And what kind of reaction did you get?

AY: Yeah we did the digital thing with venues showing a satellite download. We went to the beginning of one in New York and the end of another. I think they varied. I heard that some were packed with people having a blast but I read on the boards that one guy found himself alone in a theatre in the Mid West. We did discuss the idea of doing one off screenings as part of a club night so people could experience it in the style of the way it happened. That's definitely something we'd like to do in the future.

LWLies: You used surround sound on the 360 Degrees In The Round Tour (1998), and on the Beasties video anthology (2000) you offered an interactive viewing experience with alternate camera angles that could be switched as you watched. Do you see yourself as a technical innovator?

AY: It's exciting trying to find new ways of presenting our work. But it's important that the idea stands up for itself and that it's not just 'innovation' for its own sake.

LWLies: In the past you've run a magazine (Grand Royal), made live tracks available for free online for those unable to attend the shows - for which got you in trouble with your label - and toured extensively around the world. Why is it so important for the Beastie Boys to communicate with their fans?

AY: I guess I'm uncomfortable with the term 'fan'. It reminds me of New Kids on the Block and it makes me feel weird. We kinda grew up in the early punk scene in New York. You'd go to see bands and everybody in the audience was in bands. You'd go see them and they'd come see you. It was a collective thing, which is how I see the Beastie Boys today. In that light the film was collaboration with the audience.

LWLies: Can you describe what it's like to be on stage feeding off the energy of a crowd like the one at Madison Square Garden?

AY: Playing in front of a crowd like that, there's definitely a synergy. It's not like they're just watching it - they're part of it.

LWLies: There's a moment in the film where the Beasties get stuck in an elevator that echoed spoof rock doc, This Is Spinal Tap. Is that something you were aiming for?

AY: We weren't thinking about it at the time. But in retrospect when we were editing it was a great contrast to have us listening to muzak in the elevator and cut away to the crowd going crazy.

LWLies: Ben Stiller can be seen shaking his ass in the crowd. Did the footage highlight any other celebrity fans?

AY: The graffiti artist Lee is in there somewhere and you can see my daughter dancing at the side of the stage.

LWLies: Twenty-five years and still going strong as a collective. Why do you think the Beastie Boys have continued to be so successful?

AY: I guess we've stayed together so long because when it all breaks down we're still great friends and good things seem to come from that.

LWLies: Will we see Mixmaster Mike scratching visuals at future gigs like DJ Yoda?

AY: It's something he already does with a version of the 'Posse In Effect' video. He cuts up this Stevie Wonder beat from a TV show. But the song didn't come out great so I didn't put it in the movie.

LWLies: Do you prefer playing live as a band, or three MCs and one DJ?

AY: I like going back and forth. It's cool using the revolving stage to switch between the two while Mike hypes the crowd. It keeps things fresh on tour.

LWLies: What are your top five music movies?

AY: I like the slow moving tracking shots in Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii. The Woodstock DVD is great. I love the section with Hendrix playing as the sun is rising and the way it's shot with close-ups of his hand on the fret. Rainbow Bridge [hippy counterculture doc with a Hendrix soundtrack] is totally bizarre. I guess they're old hippy movies. I've gotta check out Fade To Black [Jay Z's Black Album tour movie] and Block Party [Dave Chappelle-hosted hip hop shindig featuring Talib Kweli, Big Daddy Kane, Mos Def and The Fugees].

LWLies: Which directors have inspired you?

AY: I like the way directors like Terrence Malick take risks with editing and visual style. In The New World he's not afraid to dispense with dialogue.

LWLies: Do you have plans to make another film?

AY: I've just finished a script with a friend of mine. It's a drama set in the graffiti underworld of NYC. We're in pre-production now and hoping to shoot in the fall.

Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That! will be released nationwide with a special one night digital screening on July 3rd, and then theatrically on July 7th. The DVD is released on July 24th with exclusive unseen extras designed by the Beastie Boys. To find out more visit www.beastieboysmovie.com

once again, the beasties (albeit unintentionally) lead me to something really good. It's truely a peerless issue and if any of y'all are into film in general, this would make an excellent subscription. Their film reviews and articles are a great combination of village voice take-no-prisoners without the elitism. I got my copy yesterday. it's packed with great information, good layout and artwork; i'd recommend it at $14 easily.

hey remy, were you gonna do anymore scans? i tried to scan it from my copy that came, but it comes out crappy looking, and some of the words/pictures get cut off  (i'm worried about it coming apart as well. it's already got a tear in the bottom right corner peeling away....gotta be careful!). but you know, if you're not gonna, i'll do it. i was just making sure first. mine never come out perfectly, what's the secret? because i can't just tear out the pages, this magazine is sacred to me now.

the mic to mic site mentioned yauch's interview was in there too, but i haven't seen it. unless i missed it. there is however, an interview with one of the cameraguys. pretty cool stuff. (y) (also reviews--really good ones, gotta turn the magazine around and around to read 'em all though)

and i showed my parents my drawings (hehe) so i bet my dad is telling everyone now that his daughter's pictures were in a magazine. he already told my aunt and uncle in front of me, so i turned magenta kinda like this: :o

i like how the beasties are just all throughout the magazine, little things sometimes but still cool.

the only thing i didn't like about the magazine was the negative review of
x-men 3 really. i thought it wasn't half bad. *shrugs*

haha and i really liked that quote from south park in there. i almost felt like it was put there just for me. :P

LWL is really put together well, it looks better than a lot of magazines. if you
have the $14, i say "buy the sucker!!!"

sorry, i'm kinda jumping around with this post, i'm not very good at putting my thoughts together. i need a thought organizer :/

scanning is hard work. plus there's the uploading part....blah i'm lazy..i wish i could just glue the magazine to the board so you can see it for yourselves.
again i say, remy, do you have any scans???

thanks.

i just re-read this post. i hope it makes sense to you guys!

klepto- to be clear, the interview with Yauch can only be found on littlewhitelies website, not in the print version...

I am receiving my copy this week, so hopefully its waiting for me in the mail when I get home from work... I will do my best to provide more scans, but from the sounds of it, it is nothing but Beastie Boys front to back...

Ive got my work cut out, but I know it will be worth it...

p.s. to the editors of Littlewhitelies: what a great idea, thanks for involving the fans from the message board... no one had heard of your zine, but it sounds like great stuff for film and music enthusiasts... any way of selling the zine on U.S. newsstands in the future? i headed by Virgin and they hadnt heard of it, same goes for specialty news stores...

It’s a nice magazine, not much Beastie or AIFST, and it was very surprising to find my draw on the last page, but still a fine reed :)
