I picked up a few new Nirvana rarities this last weekend.

Unplugged UnCut and a duet between him and Courtney Love singing "Pennyroyal Tea" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night." I think a firm 1/3 of Nirvana's catalogue consists of rarities, unreleased etc.

The UnCut thing was interesting though...had some enlightening audience asides and a mock version of Sweet Home Alabama for a couple bars.

Where'd you find these? Are they bootlegs?

Yeah, bootlegs. Pootytang from General Beastie hooked me up with a membership to a ######## site. If there's rarities like that that you're interested in, let me know!

Well played ADHD. Well played.

Interestingly enough, I noticed a 45 of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love doing "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" at the indie record shop a few days ago. Quite the coincidence.

In other Nirvana-related news, yesterday I went and managed to find "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!" video that they released after Cobain's death at the used record store. As far as I'm aware, this isn't out on DVD, so I'm stuck with VHS (*shudder*).

But still, I watched this last night and I was all like: "HOLY CRAP!!"

It was so awesome! It compiled various live performances (concerts, TV appearances, etc.) and interviews of Nirvana during the "Nevermind"-era. Seeing that stuff really made their music feel like listening to it the first time (well, almost).

The best parts were when Nirvana appeared on this British late night talk show (Jonathan Ross or somebody?). He said they'd play "Lithium" but they opened right out of the gates with this super-loud, super-rocking version of "Territorial Pissings" that needless to say rocked the house. At the end, the host was all like: "Well, I hope we didn't wake the neighbors." :D

The other really awesome part was an appearance on another British show (maybe Top of the Pops??) and they did a hilarious "canned" version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Basically, the instrumentation was pre-recorded and they deliberately "pretended" to play while Kurt sang a deliberately cheesy, low-voiced version of the song. How punk rock of them. :)

In either case, I hope they come out with a DVD of this and add some extra stuff (and I definitely would love to see a DVD of their "Unplugged" performance).

Wow, whats the chances of that. I was just about to post the video somewhere, as I'd only just come across it, but figured I'd better do a search to make sure its been posted all ready only to find a post about it made yesterday.

Anyway its here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=g3-2S4pxxkk&search=nirvana%20top%20of%20the%20pops)

I'm just going to assume I'm one of the few who just don't "get" Nirvana.

Yeah, just move along. Let the Nirvana enthusiasts discuss the rarities. Nothing more to see here. ;)

Really?

For me it was always the raw emotion in some of the songs. The angst, rage, bitterness that came across in songs like "Scentless Apprentice" or "Milk It" or even "Stay Away."

Also, the opera that was Kurt's life, the intensely personal lyrics. A good Nirvana song is like a Anne Sexton poem - it's so personal that it's both specific and universal.
