Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi was hospitalized on Thursday, the day before the Myanmar government officially confirmed that her house arrest had been extended one year.
The former leader of the National League for Democracy has been in detention or under house arrest off and on for the past 17 years. Her party won a landslide election victory in 1990 but the ruling military junta refused to allow it to assume power. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize one year later.
The junta also unilaterally promoted changing the country's name to Myanmar from Burma.
