this thread is to post bands or whatever that have been around forever, but you're only just now starting to listen to.

i recently got into eric b & rakim for the first time, i picked up paid in full and follow the leader...about 50% of rap makes much more sense now.

yeah....while i've had singles and dubs...and known of them since thier inception....i've only recently (past year or so) been buying up albums of Erik B and Rakim....and old Public Enemy albums...

i started liking Journey and some other ballad-rock bands of the 70's and 80's in only the past 3-4 years or so....first as a complete joke between friends....then we really started buying the albums and going to the reunion tours and shit....
i just saw Styx for the second time, along with foreigner....
i don't even care if people think it's gay....i love that shit.

i've just recently realized that CCR's "down on the corner" is one of the funkiest songs ever written in ANY musical genre ever.

I caught onto public enemy just in the last few years although I knew some of their songs from hearing them play through car speakers during the summer. :)

I bought the four Busta Rhymes albums I didn't have yesterday (The Coming, Genesis, It Ain't Safe No More, The Big Bang).

I never liked DMX much until recently.

I like Big Daddy Kane and Slick Rick more now.

For some reason, I've got the fever I had a few years ago when Vice City came out and I'm listening to everything I can find from the artists on the soundtrack, from any of stations. So I guess everything from Whodini to A Flock of Seagulls.

The Coming- solid debut.

Genesis - a little unven...but pretty decent.

It ain't safe no more- how is that? heard bad things. liked Make it Clap though.

Big Bang- and how is that? i like the single..

The Coming- I've heard most of it before, and from what I remember it was pretty solid.

Genesis- Haven't listened to it yet.

It Ain't Safe No More- It's okay. I'm listening to it right now and I'm getting near the end. Despite the fact that several tracks were produced by J Dilla, I still can't get completely into it like my favorite, regardless of the corny Y2K bit, Extinction Level Event. I don't know, I may put Genesis in instead because aside from "Make It Clap," I really haven't been nodding my head to any of it.

The Big Bang- Exceptionally well done. All but three songs have guests, but unlike, say LL's latest in which all but one has a guest, the guests aren't distracting. Stevie Wonder provides the hook on the autobiographical "Been Through the Storm" and Rick James appears on "In the Ghetto" which samples his classic. Nas and Missy Elliott appear as well on separate tracks, and even an appearance by will.i.am doesn't completely piss me the hell off. One thing I'm extremely glad about is that there is no "Touch It" remix. I didn't like the fact that Busta seemed like a guest on his own damn record. I would definitely purchase this.

i am going to start getting into* some talib and mos def

*indicates start buying their albums, so gimme some suggestions.

adam_f
06-14-2006, 10:36 AM
Start with Mos Def's 'Black On Both Sides' and Talib Kweli's 'Quality'

Their 'Blackstar' album can get old (even though I do enjoy it) and I still don't like Kweli's Reflection Eternal album with Hi-Tek.

Mos Def's 'New Danger' is hit or miss and Kweli's 'The Beautiful Struggle' is a really good album, with the Mary J. Blige song 'I Try' that you might've heard. Kweli's latest 'Right About Now' is also pretty decent.

You could also buy Rawkus Records ten year anniversary album that features some of each of them, and it also includes Pharoahe Monch, Common, and Big L. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BRD6Z8/qid=1150301987/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/002-2793323-7289634?s=music&v=glance&n=5174

I wish I could hear Eric B & Rakim's first 3 albums again for the first time. And PE's first 4. I'm sure that about 60% of all rap songs from between 1988 and 1994 comprised at least one vocal sample from Paid In Full or Nation Of Millions...

I recently decided to listen to the Ten Years After records I have in my collection. I didn't even know what the hell kind of music they played before Sunday. It's okaaaayish, I guess.

yeah, really. that's what i was getting at with the "50% of rap makes much more sense" comment, i never realized how many lines came from them. the vocal samples too, it was like a constant deja vu, listening to them, as i tried to figure out where i'd heard everything before.

one really notable thing about them, i don't think rakim ever swears. at least if he has, i haven't noticed it. not that it bothers me when rappers do, but it seems really rare. he's so cool, he sounds so...comfortable. i love it.

Yeah, he hardly ever does/did in songs. But the version of 'My Melody' that's on the album is edited.

He was 18 when he made that song. Think about 18 year old rappers today sounding that cool. Impossible. These days young rappers sound like morons. Which is why the most accomplished rappers today are all in their thirties. Back then there wasn't even such thing as rappers in their thirties.

A couple of months ago I started listening to Can -- stuff from roughly 1971-74. It's amazing; funky trance polyrhytmic stuff. I knew they were considered Krautrock which I assumed was all autotromic vocals and bleeps and blips and stuff.

Just last weekend, I bought a Mouse on Mars CD, which is sort of like a cool cross between Chemical Brothers and Ricardo Villalobos. (But then, those are two of the very few electronica touchstones I have.) The CD is called Idiology [sic] and came out in 2001, I think. And it is so, so, so cool. Loving it. (y)

i've just recently realized that CCR's "down on the corner" is one of the funkiest songs ever written in ANY musical genre ever.

That is a very astute observation, I've always felt "Willy and the Poor Boys" is perhaps one of the most "American" albums ever put out. Creedence Clearwater Revival are to this day an amazing band. I fucking love late Sixties, early Seventies Music. The production and youthfulness, a certain optimism that is completely lacking in bands of the past few decades.

I just never thought of "Down on the Corner" as being "Funky" but you know what Q, your dead on.

Yeah, I don't really think of Can as Kraut, even though they sort of defined the whole early sound of it. They're a lot less electronic sounding than a lot of the bands that followed them, who are what I think of when I think Kraut, like Kraftwerk and Faust.

re: CCR

It blows me away to think that (supposedly) a lot of critics dismissed them as just a silly singles band back in the day. Willie and the Poor Boys and Green River are a couple of flat out awesome albums, and Cosmo's Factory is no slouch.

Yep. I sampled stuff by those folks, since music guides link Can to Kraftwerk, faust, Neu!, and others, and my reaction was like, "That's not the same at all!" (n)

Recently, I've been catching up on modern indie rock. Some of it's good, some of it's meh:

I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One by Yo La Tengo is very shoegazy. I like it.

Both of the Shins records. I love the second one, but don't really care for the first one.

Destroyer's Rubies by Destroyer. Good, but I liked City of Daughters better.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Don't really like it. I can stand 'bad' vocalists, but this is too much even for me. He sounds exactly like Bejar from Destroyer, only he sings worse, which I thought unimaginable. There are 'good bad singers' and 'bad singers' and this guy is just bad.

Most of that stuff... I liked some of the singles ("Don't You Want Me," stuff like that) but couldn't abide by the kind of instantly-dated synth sounds and draining of human soul in the playing and vocals, etc.

I know what you mean but in a way thats what i like about it. You're dead right about synths, i think any music that uses the technology of the time becomes dated fairly quickly, but i like that about it also. Cars by Gary Numan sounds dated BUT it's still a great record 25 years on. A lot of the r&b i listen to at the moment (j-davey, sa-ra, sugarush beat company etc etc) is using those synth sounds again and i'm really really diggin it.

You can sample it here. (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:1srb286c056a)

"Breakaway" was their hit (it was in one of the Bill and Ted movies, if I remember right), but the sample for that sucks. Skip to #13 -- even though it's the remix, it might sound familiar -- or #1 "Iron Lung."

Man -- the '80's had some great albums.

1982 alone, if I remember right, had

Lou Reed - The Blue Mask
Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
Squeeze - East Side Story
Marshall Crenshaw - Marshall Crenshaw
Richard and Linda Thompson - Shoot Out the Lights
Paul McCartney - Tug of War
