View Full Version : You know what's nice about England?

I was talking to an English friend of mine last weekend and I remember saying that there really isn't anything that I can think of that I really love about England. Not that I hate England but, there isn't anything that makes me go "that is soooo English and I LOVE IT!!!" Then this morning when I was driving to work, it hit me!!! There is one thing that I really REALLY love... not so much about England, but the English. When you are driving, other motorists will warn you if there is a cop in the direction you are going, they'll flash their lights at you. They'll kinda give everyone the "slow down" sign out the window, basically anything they can do to give you the "heads up". It has happened time after time whether I was going the speed limit or not... just a friendly little "watch out for the pigs"... I love it...

yes we're all called featherstone-witty, live in castles, play polo wearing pin stripe suits and bowler hats, shoot lame deer from 6ft, and watch packs of dogs rip helpless foxes apart foxes while we quaff vintage wine from ex-colonies (who still entertain us with their commonwealth games) and pretend we would never engage in acts of international subterfuge.

me also! i think we have 5 or 6 pigs with cars and a few on foot. the deer are all on hoof but there are close to 8 million so you gotta watch them. they are sneaky sonsabitches. but we do the light flashin thing (even to the deer) and when we are all at the bar really late, (not the deer! friends) the first one to leave will call if they see a cop on the way home. :)

(yes, I like yelling, but only at night and in the privacy of my own home. shouting in the day time just walking around is annoying)

the flashing lights thing is done internationally.

I've noticed it in the states as well.

I've been doing that since I was maybe 18 after my mom told me what it's all about.

Also if it's night time and a semi passes me, I'll turn my lights off and on to tell him that he's clear of me so he could move over.

I enjoy watching the parliment when they are in session.

They are much more alive than the congress we have here.

I love clotted cream. What they call clotted cream in the US is a disgrace!

I've never seen the flashing lights thing in the US.

I hung out in the Old Bailey for a while, watched criminal court, and talked to guards. The wigs and robes are stupid, and there were too many attorneys in the room at one time, but the quality of the attorneying was first rate. Anyhow, I absolutely loved how the guards kept the courtroom quiet and the way the judges ran the place.

One of the trials I watched was an honest to goodness honor killing. And I made friends with an (alleged) murderer's brother. (y)

I watch those every once in awhile too. It's almost like church! Everyone is all vocal and cheering on the dude they agree with. Kinda cool to watch really.

The UK has the largest variation in accents of any English-speaking country, so how can you pigeonhole them all into one accent and say you hate it?

Diversifyyyyy, maaaaan.

Like this.

I really like the Irish accent and the Scottish accent (can't actually comment on the Welsh). But I've always felt that way about the English accent. It's not like I heard it for the first time when I moved here.

ps.
I'm also happy that it's warming up :)

I was thinking more along the lines of Scouse, Geordie, Mackem, Manc, Brummie, Black Country, Yorkshire, Lancashire etc.

To label all English accents as one accent is bewildering.

So true sir. It's kinda sad, but I've always found the huge range of british accents so interesting. I've tried to figure out the different ones since I was a little Noekie, And I think I can tell the difference between em now + I can 'do' them. Well, sortof. Still needs improvement, but it's quite impressive for a dutch kid without an education.

You know what I like about England? People really know how to obey the rules about doing things in an orderly fashion. And the cab drivers are so smart. But the best thing that would make me say "that is so English and I love it!" would have to be the dry self deprecating humor, almost politely apologetic but cruel.

it'd be like labelling all american accents as one. if you do that, i know a guy from boston and a guy from tennessee who would beg to differ

I find that with American accents that there is a very distinct difference, I can usually tell. I remember watching Dustin Hoffman being interviewd by Graham Norton (who is Irish) and he was completey gobsmacked that the audience could tell he had an Irish "because I thought you were English!"

I can't be sure it was Dustin Hoffman but just appease myself we'll say it was, alroit den.

I like the way that, on the 1% of days when it is sunny, it is actually so very nice that it manages to make you forget how shit the weather is the other 99% of the time.

Oh, and Pimms. God I love Pimms.

Yes, I grew up in the sticks and they def give you the heads up if there's a pig in the vicinity. It's so nice. Can't say I've ever seen it done here in la. If you flashed your lights or so much as hand gestured out the window at someone here they'd prolly think you were trying to road rage on em or something.
