It recently came to my attention that my girlfriend has not seen NOR HEARD of "The Goonies". This, you can imagine, came as a bit of a shock to me. First of all it boggled my mind that someone has made their way through life without ever hearing of this magical movie let alone not seen it.

Then i was talking to her sister and she hadn't seen it either and i was lamenting the fact that they had (in my opinion) missed a part of their childhood. Her sister then said "Well, now's your opportunity to introduce her to this apparently wonderful movie".

I started considering this, and I wondered, can you show an adult something like "The Goonies" for the first time and expect them to love it? Or is the reason we love it because we grew up with it. Has it been in our minds for so long that the memory of it has more meaning to us than the actually movie it self. I still enjoy it today as much as i ever did, but I wonder if i had never seen it and it came on TV one Sunday afternoon would I enjoy it as much.

Im afraid I'll watch it with her someday, and she'll turn around and call it the silliest thing she's ever seen and i'll have to break up with her on the spot.

You people are all talking a bunch of jibberish.

Goonies is the best 80's kids movie that was made.

But Roosta, I wouldn't show them. You hyped it too much, and it won't live up to the hype now that they are "adults".

I've heard of it, but I've never seen it. It's a timing thing really; I was already 'too old' for it when it came out I suppose.

I had a similar situation though with a friend who had never seen The Jerk. But, she's younger than I am. So - timing thing. (We rented it and watched it though and she loved it, because, how could you not?)

Yeah, I loved the movie when I was younger, but you cant really expect an adult to get into it.

My wife has gotten me to watch a series of her childhood favorites, ones I had never bothered watching, like Labyrinth and Drop Dead Fred, and I've hated most of them.

I didn't see the goonies until I was 18.

My Dad hated that asian kid so through out my childhood I just never watched it since it was never played around me.

My boyfriend at the time showed it to me. At such a late age, it had some charm, but it's definitely not as great of a movie (to me) and probably won't be AS MUCH to her as to you since, as you said, we did not grow up with it.

No, because about a half hour in, I just gave her the 'FUKTHIIIIISHIT' look and she was like, "Yeah, I didn't remember it being this stupid". So we turned it off.

Hahaha yes Drop Dead Fred, Labyrinth, and Goonies are all in that special bubble. There's a few that I can still watch now (Big) that could be seen by someone new who would like it.

But roosta I'm pretty sure she just won't get what the big deal is. When a bunch of friends forced me to watch Labyrinth for the first time when I was like 18, the only way I survived through it was a copious amount of marijuana.

And duh I love the Goonies  DON'T YOU WISH YOUR GIRLFRIEND LOVED THE GOONIES LIKE ME? DON'T YOU WISH YOUR GIRLFRIEND WAS A NERD LIKE ME? DONTCHAAAA

If there was ever a movie where I had to claim to know every line to it, this would be the movie.

I used to, and actually still do, watch this movie like it was my job.

good call (y)
i know i'm repeating but the movie CAN ONLY be watched when you're a kid and when you think you know what swear words are.

that's what makes it so good to watch when you're a kid, cause they're swearing and going on underground adventures and being stuck in freezers with stiffs who have been shot in the head.

it's just, you can't explain it, it's magical.

I had never even heard of The Goonies until I saw people raving about it on this board.

Drop Dead Fred makes Goonies seem like Lawrence Of Arabia. If she owns that, and finds it entertaining, I'm sure she can appreciate Goonies, man.
