Hearing that Paul McCartney turned 64 the other day (or was it today...), I suddenly remembered something I've always wanted (but always forgotten) to ask!! (y)

In the introduction of The Sounds Of Science (Paul's Boutique - but you already knew that) am I hearing a Beatles sample of When I'm Sixty Four?

It sounds veeeeerry much the same, and in any case, I didn't think the Beatles allowed sampling of their music, so how'd the 'Boys pull off this one?

mike d personally visited michael jackson (he owns the beatles music rights) and offered a writing credit and a portion of the beastie boys dogfood company ownership. true story. i think michael jackson named his first born after mike d's dog

I believed you up till "mike d personally visited michael jackson", the rest I'm a little sketchy on. I'd forgotten Wacko Jacko owned the rights to the Beatles music (come to think of it, he mightn't now after all those law suits and shit...)

funny this should come up... (http://www.columbusdispatch.com/features-story.php?story=dispatch/2006/06/18/20060618-D2-01.html)

"• Beastie Boys (1989) — Not a remake, per se, but the hip-hop trio samples When I’m Sixty-Four on track six of its sophomore album, Paul’s Boutique. The rap song, titled The Sounds of Science, also samples The End. Group members MCA, Mike D and Ad-Rock will turn 64 in 2029, 2030 and 2031."

there's a tonne of beatles samples in sounds of science alone. back in 89, sampling wasn't a problem. there's your answer.

But why was there a problem with sampling the Beatles with "I'm Down"...I guess I'm not clear on why they were able to sample Beatles on PB but not have "I'm Down" included on LTI.

I heard MJ didn't like the lyrics to I'm Down or somethin.

Got me. My only thought was that they actually did seek permission from MJ to use it, and he said no...whereas they just went ahead with PB perhaps.

But yeah good point, it's got me confused.
