Of course most people say (in my opion rightly) that dylan is the master, but who else do you dig?
Of the older songwriters i like leonard cohen, neil young, cash ect.
Some alternative s/sw such as tom waits, nick cave and pj harvey keep the genre interesting without ripping off early masters...
What about brighteyes? i think he's really good now...
Hmmm up to you?
I voted Nick Cave, just because of the variation and constant quality of his work and songs. Plus, he is absolutly amazing live. Actually, despite his age, dylan was brillant live! Really amazing band backing him up though..
guess who i'm about to post:
papa het (back in the day though!) all his work pre-black album is classic.
i was going to say Serj from SOAD but.. he doesn't write ALOT of their stuff unfortunately.

Hey! poll lol :D
The more interesting choice the better tbh. Who can you class as a singer songwriter now?
SOAD fucking rule though (y)
when there wasn't a poll when i read the thread!
i'll have a geez through the list. or.. i'll just vote for other.

It's difficult to choose between Tom Waits, Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, so I'm gonna go with Ed Harcourt (I think you can call him that).... or Scott Walker (in the 60's) or Rufus Wainwright or ....

Absolutely! They're definitely among the best.
And though these definitely aren't my favorites, I feel like James Taylor, Elton John, and Billy Joel should be on the list just because they so fit the singer/songwriter cliche. James Taylor is the first image I get whenever I hear the term "singer/songwriter." And then Carole King and Joni. And don't forget Carly Simon and Joan Baez. I guess there are a lot of them from that era...
Some of my personal picks that aren't on there are Paul Simon (especially for the S&G stuff), Tori Amos, Ryan Miller (Guster), Bruce Springsteen.
