I saw a show once that featured a boy who was only maybe 5 or 6 who was convinced he was 'supposed to be' a girl. He was from a really typical, midwestern, suburban, mom-dad-2-car-garage family (not that there's anything wrong with a family that's not like that, just saying, it's not like he had any influences that any other kid wouldn't have had). He loved to put together really outrageous outfits, and his mom couldn't keep him out of her make-up bag. The family's attitude towards it was "this is our kid, this is how he is, we love him unconditionally". So that's cool.
