I was told by my doctor today that I needed a birth certificate to get into Canada, and it was validated by Brett who found something online about it. And so I freak out, call my mom to see if she packed it up and sent it down to North Carolina (which YES, they did - thank you Dad). I start cursing on the phone hardcore and just then my boss came out and was concerned, and I told him what happened and he let me off early so I could run into DC and get a copy of my records.
Either way, I call the assclowns at the birth certificate place and they don't have a representative and it took 15 minutes to get through their autosystem. And it turns out they can't reissue one for at least 24 hours. Freak out even more.
Then I realized that I was being retarded and needed to call Northwest Airlines. They told me I just need a valid ID.
Fuckin' hell.
Whatever, at least I have the rest of the day off so I can pack and shit.

Yeah, if you're flyin into Canada, you just need a government issue ID.
Border Patrol is a little more strict, most ask to see a passport or Birth Certificate.

The thing is, I DON'T have a passport. This is my first time on a plane, ever. And I called NW Airlines 2 times. The first time the lady told me I ONLY needed a valid photo ID. Then as I was checking in, it said "Proof of citizenship required," and I take that to mean a birth certificate. I call back, get someone else and she says "Yeah, photo ID." I ask her if she's sure, because I think I might need my birth certificate, she puts me on hold and talks to her supervisor, comes back and says "They might ask for it in Canadian customs, but you don't need it for Northwest to fly with us." Umm...okay. So can I be detained in customs? I mean it even says on the bottom of the e-ticket "International travelers are required to either swipe a passport at an airport kiosk or present it to an agent at least 1 hour prior to departure." Yet I've come to believe that the Caribbean, Canada, and Mexico don't count as "international."
I don't have my birth certificate, either. My parents packed it up and sent it down to NC. Once I found this out I sped into DC to see if I could get another copy, and *uh-oh* they close at FUCKIN' 3:30 PM. WHAT. THE. HELL.
So if they won't let me on, I'm raising hell. TWO of their goddamn phone representatives told me I'd be fine with just my ID, which isn't what the goddamn website says. I've never traveled before so I have no idea who to believe. This is goddamn frustrating and I'm gonna be pissed if I can't fly.

just tell them that you are fleeing the US due to the oppresive rule of one George W. Bush and that you are seeking asylum in Canada. I'm sure they will be sympathic and let you in. don't they have a policy about not turning away refugees?;)

They're now telling me I NEED my birth certificate...and to push back the flight, I need to pay an extra $100. And the birth certificate is $23.
I can't afford this shit, this is ridiculous. They fucking told me all I need is a photo ID, and now they're saying I need more. The only reason why I didn't get it beforehand is because they TOLD me I wouldn't need it. And now they're telling me I'm SOL.
And if I push back my flight, I'll get in Canada at 11:30 at night.
This whole situation is making me :(

I'll say it again: I don't have a passport. Or a birth certificate.
They're allowing me to push back my flight one-time for free, because they're super awesome. Which means I have to go get my birth certificate tomorrow morning before I fly out. And I get in Edmonton at 11:30 at night. Boourns to that.

Thanks. :)
Yeah I just found out that if I was 15 minutes earlier to the birth certificate place I would have been able to make my flight tomorrow morning. It's okay though, now I have extra time to sleep and pack and get ready.

effective some time in 2007 passports will be required for travel between the US and Canada.
i recieved my passport the very last business day i resided in Canada. even after my immigration status is sorted here, i will continue to travel on a Canadian passport. (after the DHS / INS permit me to go anywhere of course)

You should be banned from the General Political Discussion forums.
Honestly, what did you expect? Your drivers license would pave your entry into another COUNTRY?
