Today I had to have my pet budgie put to sleep. She had been unwell for a couple of weeks, several trips to the vet and a course of anti-biotics didn't seem to work and for the past day or two she spent most of the time on the bottom of her cage sleeping.
It turns out she had a tumour in her stomach. I know she was 'only a bird'...but i had her for 4 years but she was such a character and damn, i loved her to bits.
RIP Cleo. :(
Losing a pet sucks.

Awww, i am sorry *hugs*
I remember her whistles down the phone :)
I remember when my cat was put down. even though she always scratched me, its like loosing someone.
yes it does suck. you get over it though. in the long run, you get more happiness out of their lives than you do grief over their deaths, and eventually you can look back and see it that way. but for a while, yeah, it sucks.
hang in there.

give it some time but get another bird when you are ready. Its good to give that love back that she gave to you for four years.
I had to put down my cat Cookie last year and swore to God I would never, ever get another cat to replace her....over time, I missed having an animal so I got Jaxon. ....and I am sure I'll freak out when I have to put him down too.
I'm sorry, I know how hard it is.

It turns out she had a tumour in her stomach. I know she was 'only a bird'...but i had her for 4 years but she was such a character and damn, i loved her to bits. I forgot to say that when I lost my iguana, people said "oh, it's just a reptile" and I always thought that was such an odd thing to say. As if you can't bond with a reptile just because he's spiney and green. Pets are amazing. :)
On the other hand, this guy at my gym has been having a string of crap luck. Someone two machines down told his news to a group of women who were standing around her. She said, "He lost his wife a few months ago." ...and those women said a collective and politely-concerned-sounding "Ohhh." and there was maybe some head shaking. Then the woman said, "And then his dog died." ...and those women went "OHHHH NO!!" and there was this mix of "that's horrible" and "how awful" and "that poor guy." People can be weird. :)
I'm sorry to hear about that. My wife just lost her dog a couple of weeks ago and I cried like a little baby. I know what your going through.
Its weird how sometimes you don't know how much you love or care about someone/something until its gone.
I've been through it with a couple of cats, but like a wise man once said:
"yes it does suck. you get over it though. in the long run, you get more happiness out of their lives than you do grief over their deaths, and eventually you can look back and see it that way. but for a while, yeah, it sucks."
After my current little friends check out...I'm never getting another one again. I get waaaaay too attached.
Keep your head up and give it time.

My sister lost her white shepherd a few years ago and they'd been close--first dog she ever had and that dog was amazingly sweet. She said that that loss was a deep pain, but that she recovered from it quickly--like in a month or so.
My tony cat. Man, when he goes. (n)

Once when I lost one, I had to go run a complete lap around the block at 3 AM, totally naked.
On the other hand, this guy at my gym has been having a string of crap luck. Someone two machines down told his news to a group of women who were standing around her. Someone was just telling me about how this guy lost his wife, 2 months later his son died in a car accident, and then 3 weeks after that his daughter and her family met the same fate as his son.
Shit is scary. So, ladies and genitals, appreciate the ones you got now and show it. You never know what can happen.

Thanks everyone :) - just now out of complete habit i walked from the kitchen into the living room and did this clucking thing with my tongue i used to do (she used to copy me when i did it). I guess it's going to take time...
*sigh*
Ms Peachy - Ava is a total doll. She is 2 months old now, which i can hardly believe, and now weighs 11 pounds 9oz! Those little smiles are the greatest arn't they? They send my hubby into a gibbering fool... :o)

I am very very sorry for what happened. Animals are never "just a bird" or "just a dog"...they are members of our families and are capable than a far purer love than any human. You are in my thoughts.Yeah, at the gym this morning, a guy was late getting to his trainer and he explained why. We'd had some fairly severe thunderstorms come through last night and the guy's two dogs were in a panic over the lightning and thunder. I guess they were very upset for a few hours and made some accidents in various rooms. The guy was trying to console the dogs and deal with the accidents. So this other guy who was using weights next to them said something like, "These are not people we're talking about. They're animals. Dogs. I would have put them out in the yard so that they'd learn to confront the lightning and thunder directly and the next time, they'll be happy to be inside and not outside."

How ignorant. Our dog used to have HUGE panic attacks during lightning storms. His eyes would go all unfocused looking and he'd salivate outrageously and literally gouge holes in the door with his claws if we tried to shut him in another room. Our vet told us that there's a theory that some dogs (and other animals) are especially sensitive to the electromagnetic changes in the atmosphere during a storm, and it's not a matter of bad behaviour or anything they (the animals) can control; it kind of "short circuits" them.
Tell your gym guy with the dog that we had GREAT success with a homeopathic remedy that we got from a site called petmeds.com. I can't remember exactly what it was called but it was some sort of natural anti-anxiety thing for dogs and it worked really, really well for our dog.
oh god, my dog HATED thunderstorms. whenever he heard thunder, he would just get up and pace uncontrollably. if we tried to keep him still and hold him and pet him, he would get full body shakes. he'd also pee on the floor, even if we were looking right at him. of course we couldn't let him out, could we? poor guy. eventually we just learned that the best thing to do was just let him pace until he got it out of his system. eventually he'd get tired and just lie down again. i always felt horrible watching him though, he shook so much.
he was such a relaxed dog the rest of the time. my theory was that he didn't really understand what thunderstorms were. like he couldn't look outside and see the lightning and realize that it's a weather thing, he probably thought it was coming from inside the house, or something that we were doing. i mean, think about it from a dog's perspective. humans can control the lights, control the temperature inside the house, we control all the gates, we're as gods to them, really. why wouldn't we be responsible for thunder, too?

Sorry about your bird. I know how you feel.
I've actually cried whenever any of our pets have died in the past. Especially over one of our dogs, who was only a year old at the time. But I've only cried a few of the times that people I've known have died.

I feel so sorry for them when they get all spazzy. I will definitely tell him to look into homeopathic stuff. He's a Tu-Th guy, so I'll have to wait a few days. Thank you! You learn so much from the Internets.

Sorry to hear about your bird, Yorks.
Must've been frustrating when you couldn't make her better.
When I lost Ziggy and Iris (hit by cars within 6 months of each other) it took two years before I was ready to get new cats.
My sister found some pills for animals at the farmacist in Helsinki last week, something to calm them down during fireworks and thunderstorms. I never checked what the medicine was called tho. My cats love to watch fireworks and I don't think they've experienced a proper thunderstorm yet so I felt I didn't need to.

It's probably of little consolation, but adding a baby to the family often changes the lives of the pets there. My two cats have never been the same since our 1st son was born.
And what Bob said.
