* and wireless router

hi guys,

not been around much lately as i had uber laptop problems. as in, it is totally and utterly broken. many flames and sparks and beeping power adaptors and electric shocks were to be had. so it’s not a good idea to attempt melting the motherboard by more of the same jazz.

anyhoo. good news! i am being gifted the princely sum of £500 to buy a new, safe, non flame-producing and death-defying laptop. also, because i don’t want to buy another totally shite bottom of the range laptop my boyfriend is giving me another £200 for my birthday that i can use for it. so, all in all, i have a budget that can maybe stretch to about £775. this is about, well, actually exactly, $1419.36 USD. next step: which laptop?

there are probably about 15 billion more appropriate forums i could post this shit on but i am less likely to get flamed for my ineptitude here, ya know? so any help would be greatly appreciated.

uh, okay, so what would i desire in my ideal model?

- nice big pretty clear screen
- lots of memory. i just want to experience not waiting ages for things anymore. i want it to be able to run big shit. yeah, you got it claire: “big shit”. people are totally gonna get you. i was talking to someone recently about RAM and he said that sometimes it doesn’t matter sometimes if you have shatloads of ram, if it’s a generically slow computer then it won’t help so much. is this true?
- processors: wtf? my brother says AMD is the way forward. but i’m sorta easy on this, seeing as I don’t actually know what processors really do.
- nice sexy big hard-drive, please
- and, uh, i don’t know about much else. i guess i will mostly be using it for downloading and going online, also watching films. later on i intend to get a digital SLR and will, i guess, be editing and storing photographs on it so something which could deal with that & photoshop would be nice.

Oh, and one of the most important things is that I want it to have WIRELESS FREAKING CAPABILITIES.

i’m confused by this. if you have an integrated wireless thingie, do you just get some generic thing? do you get different varieties that can go, uh, faster? if so which is the way forward? i have been doing some research (honest, not that you can tell from my rambling) and i have read things about sometimes in big blocks of flats and offices people’s signals overlapping and congesting. i live in a tenement and i know lots of other people have wireless so this would be a problem.

I hear that it is ideal to separate yourself from the “crowded” 2.4 ghz frequency because it only has three non-overlapping channels. so some wireless routers, like this one (http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WGU624.php) you can access the 5 ghz 802.11a “fast lane” and avoid it. i need and want speed, yo.

if so, if I chose this router will this performance depend on the wireless isht inside my laptop? **this is my main priority** i don’t want to get this wireless router if it won’t perform what it promises because I don’t have the necessary technology. it says you need a 2.4 ghz 802.11 b/g or dual band 2.4/5 ghz 802.11 a/b/g wireless adapter. eh?

oh, and with the router i would like to be able to stop being hijacking it so it would be cool to have some security features. nothing too crazy. we’ll have about 3 computers in the flat accessing the network and the odd guest one coming in, so are there routers with password things or.. something? god, i’m so clueless.

my brother suggested the asus A6KM (http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=40P4&CategorySelectedId=11012&fb=626&NavigationKey=11012). but some of the reviews haven’t been too pretty when i googled it.

any other suggestions? sorry. it is being very demanding. i just sooo want to get it right.

please and thankyou,

claire

go to newegg.com, you can sort by price range. they have a pretty amazing selection, i found a really nice desktop replacement for about $1,500, but they had decent ones that are a lot cheaper.

yeah, go to dell's website and see about building one that meets all your needs. i have no idea what shipping would cost though, but it's worth a shot.

here's a good one (i think), $1,089

here's a not AS good one, but definitely good enough for your needs, $500. the RAM is a little slow, so you'll have to upgrade, but even with that it's cheaper than most other laptops. is a 40gb hard drive big enough?

i love newegg, i use it for all my computer stuff. i assume they ship internationally. i don't actually know.
