View Full Version : Weird, Flattering, or both?
Okay, I work with this black chick and she's pretty fucking annoying. I talk to her here and there, but haven't ever really engaged in any stimulating conversations. She's only been working here for about four months and I see that every time she walks by me she either shakes my chair, pokes me, or smacks me with whatever papers she's carrying at the time. Last week she found out that she's six weeks pregnant with a baby boy and today she tells me that she's going to name her baby after me. Well, actually, she's naming him Randall cuz she thought that that was my name, but it's just Randy. I found this to be kinda disturbing considering I don't know her that well. I asked her if she thought maybe about naming the child after her fiancee, family member, etc. She said no and wants him to be named after me cuz I'm such a sweet, cool guy. Now, I know she's crushin on me, and has been pretty much since she started here, but come on, she'd really name her child after some random dude she works with?? I can't see how her man would let this pass. Anyway, the whole situation is really buggin me out.

Now the kid is going to come looking for you after 18 years to see who he/she was named after. Ha! Thats going to be awesome. Make sure you have your hair combed that year.

Yeah, Ive seen him pick her up from work and shit. This will be her second kid with him. He's a total tool, think Malibu's Most Wanted. I've actually seen him wearing googles before. I kinda think it's funny, too cuz everyone around the office is making some pretty colorful comments that are hilarious. But, I'm still thinkin that I'll wake up in the middle of the night and see her standing in front of my bedroom window in a thunderstorm holding a butcher's knife.

It sounds like she's just playing with you.
Uh, no, she isn't. She doesn't come across as the most stable person. But she was genuinely offended when I asked if she was sure she wanted to name him after me.

I'll be all Roy Munson'ed out sleeping at 4 in the afternoon when I get the knock. "Who the fuck are you? Want some Jack?"

You didn't even read it, did you, enree?
Anyway, why not, it's catchy. Who knows, could be the knew Ethan or something.

Why did you mention that she was black?

[Why did you mention that she was black?[/QUOTE]
i was curious about that, it had no relevance to your story
Because she is. And let's not steer this thread that way. Her ethnicity has nothing to do with me being freaked out. Why would there have to be any underlying factors here? I couldn't say that she's black just as a means to describe her?

Why did you mention that she was black?
i was curious about that, it had no relevance to your storyMost of my relatives were born and raised in this city and some of them do that often. And I work with this one woman who is in her late 60s and she'll tell me a story and sometimes say something like "I met this woman, she's black but she's really nice." and I think, does it occur to her, I wonder, what she just said? It's interesting to me when it happens although I've only remarked about it with close relatives. I've always thought it was a generational thing, but I'm not so sure...?
Yes, because the majority of woman I work with happen to be African American. I made sure Im totally PC so you wouldn't string me up for that either.

quite seriously I was thinking the same thing. There's nothing wrong with mentioning her ethncity, but so far it doesn't seem relevant to the story.
I'm sorry. From now on I'll make my stories as least descriptive as possible.

I'm sorry. From now on I'll make my stories as least descriptive as possible.Awww, I didn't mean anything by it. Seriously. I was curious because I hear that a lot in my extended family but some of them, whoa, I could never ask them about it. They just would not get it. I didn't mean to irk ya.

unfortunately EZ i say no it isn't. My parents do the same thing, but then again so do people the same age as me. So i don't think that attitude is going anywhere just yet

I know this black dude and this chinese kid that always do that with their stories.
All good. I just don't feel comfortable when people are all "OMG he mentioned she was black!! He's racist!!!"
abcdefz
06-22-2006, 11:47 AM
...who had that joke about "we're the default race"?
Yeah -- I almost never go into ethnicity unless I really need to paint a scene or it's the point of the story.
For instance: the black guy with the shaved head who accosted me on a street in Sacramento, demanding to know if I was a skinhead. No. "Then why do you shave your head?" "Why do you shave your head!?" "I'M BLACK! I CAN DO THAT!"

I thought it was weird that you mentioned it too...you're getting all defensive about it now, hah! It was just a random thing to say...not like so this lady I work with that has this big fucking nasty mole, or this lady I work with that has the grossest hairsprayed hair ever, etc. It's not trying to be all PC on your ass, but it's just interesting that you used that as part of your story when as mentioned it didn't have anything to do with it.
Now, past that, that is really fucking crazy and I would be freaked out if I were you also.

perhaps it was relevant in the sense than most black women arent annoying to him. Thats what the chinese kid always says.

yeah. I think alot of us mention ethncity without even thinking aobut it or why. sometimes we say it just cause it's a matter of fact even if it's not releavent. I don't think it has anything to with racism as much as it has to do with our need to categorize and label things even subconsiously.

jesus I cant believe most of the replies of this are related to her ethnicity. The chinese kid I know cant believe it either.

i wonder if she steals hair products?
I think mentioning that she's black sounds pretty relevant in this case.
I mean, her boyfriend was a bad "Malibu's Most Wanted" stereotype he said. I'm not saying it's alright that we have these kind of stereotypes for ethnicities - but I'm saying it saves time versus giving a long list of typically "black" things that would apply.

I don't know the malibu's most wanted thing
Yeah, Ive seen him pick her up from work and shit. This will be her second kid with him. He's a total tool, think Malibu's Most Wanted. I've actually seen him wearing googles before.
Just kind of a "ghetto fabulous" mockery.
All I'm saying is - I think mentioning that she's "black" isn't exactly a reference to her skin color, but more like a quick way to mention some stereotypical traits that she might have.

it was a movie, wasn't it? about a white kid who acted black.
i accidentally caught it on comedy central, i actually laughed a few times, but i wasn't really paying attention.
I know this black dude and this chinese kid that always do that with their stories.
a friend of mine has a friend of his that he always refers to as his chinese friend eric. there's no white friend eric, it's just his full name. he doesn't even mind, actually.
