shit, man, sorry to hear that. the most important thing to do is to eat healthy, and take care of yourself (aka exercising and stuff). good luck.

that sucks. my mom has it, and my grandfather had it before he died. my mom got it at a pretty young age, but she has it under control now.

you'll be fine. THe good thing is they found out what it was before you really began to feel the effects full throttle.

My future father-in law just got diagnosed with it. It blows. It's all in my family too, it'll probably show up in me eventually. Hang in there though, mang. (y)

i hope you the best. get well soon, be strong. =]
by the way, do you get every finger pricked daily and shooting pains in the fingers? cause I remember when I was a kid in the hospital for so long I'd have that done to me and i never knew why, why so many times they had to do that ? lol

I'm so sorry to hear this, Pete. I wonder if that's why you were experiencing these symptoms (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=1217885&postcount=194). I think unexplained weight loss and increased thirst early symptoms. :(

My dad was diagnosed with diabetes in his mid-70s. He controls it with diet and exercise. No medications. Fingers crossed for you that you can control it similarly.

The good news is they found it early. Also, 67% of the population is at risk for diabetes, so you're not alone. Check out some webmd info and read up on it. Manage it carefully and you'll barely notice it.

And yeah, stop drinking sugar sweetened beverages -- but that's good advice to anyone, diabetes or not.

my moms parents, Uncle(moms brother) and great-grandmother on my pops side lost two legs because of it. You are not alone. Good luck man and its not as diffcult of a life as you might think.

I have it. Don't worry about it, you'll get used to it. Is it type 1 or 2?

It's amazing all the little remedies and herbal meds and tonics and shit that you know, Cos.(y)

My dad was diagnosed with diabetes when he was about 35. His was the type where he has to take insulin shots every day. I haven't talked to my dad in years so I don't know if it has gotten worse or what. It probably has. He never took care of himself. He would sit in front of the TV and eat an entire carrot cake and drink a family sized Coke (this was when Coke still came in those giant glass bottles). Then he would jump in the car with me and run around and do errands until he almost went into diabetic shock and crashed the fucking car. My dad is/was a moron.

all in all you will probably be able to needle yourself faster than it takes me to put my contact lenses in.

i guess its a good thing for my diet, but it will be harder to get used to some of it. hopefully i will get it under enough control soon enough so i don't have to prick so much.

i might be able to use a pump instead of inject as well, so that will help

I think it's about time for me to get checked for it. My grandma and grandpa had it.

Last month, I felt real dizzy and had cold sweats and I drank a soda. After I drank the soda, I felt much better so now I'm starting to worry that I may have it.

I have a friend that has had it for years and recently my dad developed it. My dad is lucky since he doesn't need injections, but has to eat sugar free shit and diet soda, my friend however is injecting himself all the time.

But don't worry, you'll be fine.

what causes diabetes?

type 1 means thepancreas doesn't produce any insulin. type 2 means it does, but your body doesn't use it

i think what happens is i got a virus and my body thought the insulin producingcells werethe virus and destroyed them. but i don't think anyone really knows why

awww that really sucks:( thats a ridiculously dangerous sugar lever.
my best friend developed type 1 diabetes at age 19. it took her about 2 years to get herself under control for everything. now she's almost perfectly healthy, except for the daily prickings and whatnot. her "secret" basically is exercise. almost everyday, she does at least 30 mins of something physical. it keeps her weight under check (she's 5'7" and maybe weighs 140 lbs)and she can now eat anything she wants.

using too much insulin is bad though, you'll gain lots of weight really quickly. that's what first happened to her, she didnt exercise for a while and just shot up more insulin whenever she ate. the problem is that the more insulin you use, the hungrier you get. but exercise is key to keeping your sugar levels down (which im sure your doctors are beating into you).

also, you'll note that using too little insulin can make you lose weight really quickly cause you'll pee out sugar. BAD because you'll make yourself blind. ive heard of lots of girls doing that to lose weight. ick.

best of luck. now you have more reasons to cook and eat good food though!

Wow jabumbo. I am sorry to hear that. I don't have it but I'd recommend you check out the American Diabetes Associate's website and peruse around. http://www.diabetes.org/home.jspAlso, the web has a wealth of information on diabetes. Good luck.

That's a great point. Some people just look at exercising as a way to lose weight or gain muscle, but it does so MANY other things(y)
