View Full Version : Guts and Glory: Crohn's and Colitis Walk. We're walkin 'ere!

If you can.

If you don't know by now, I have crohn's disease and I was diagnosed when i was 17. The disease is a chronic disease and there is no cure, hence the walk. :). Well to cut to the chase here are the details:

I'll (along with cosmo with our team called "2ply or not 2ply") be joining hundreds of people expected to participate in the Guts & Glory 5K Walk/Run, Sunday, August 27, 2006 at UCLA. I’d like to ask for your support in helping to raise greatly needed funds to improve research and educational programs for the more than one million children and adults suffering from Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s (CCFA) mission is to cure and prevent Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis through research, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these digestive diseases through education and support.

CCFA Facts:
• CCFA was founded in 1967.
• Today Crohn’s and colitis affect more than a million Americans.
• Approximately 40,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.
• Each year, more than 150,000 children suffer from inflammatory bowel disease.

Dollars raised will go toward:
• Summer camps for children with IBD
• Information and education for more than one million patients and their families
• Support services and research programs

Nearly 81 cents of every dollar CCFA spends goes directly into research and educational programs.

CCFA consistently meets the standards set by such organizations as the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance (www.give.org). The foundation is among the top-rated charities in the American Institute of Philanthropy’s Charity Rating Guide.

Please consider making a contribution, or join me in participating in CCFA’s Guts & Glory 5K Walk/Run. Together we can conquer these devastating diseases that target people of all ages in the prime of their lives. The goal is to collectively raise $1 million.

With sincere hope for the future,

Boomin

P.S. Your contribution is fully tax deductible. Thanks again for your support.

*wink wink* Tax deductible eh?;)

If you can give any amount, that would be awesome. Thanks so much. My family, Jessica and I all greatly appreciate it.

when you're bent over a toilet vomiting for an hour, when you've lost 30 pounds, when you can't absorb any nutrients, when your body attacks itself, when you have a hole in your intestines and food is leaking into your bloodstream and you have an emergency surgery to remove over a foot of your colon or else you'll die in a matter of hours - then, complain. until then, be understanding. it's not something where he's just going to the bathroom a lot.

it's a debilitating disease, and i want a cure in matt's lifetime, damnit. the worst is when little kids have it. that's what so great about ccfa - the summer camps for kids with crohn's and colitis are so awesome. these kids couldn't have that experience otherwise, and it makes such a huge difference in their lives. matt's been a counselor for it several times, and the way he talks about the kids and the fun they have...it's great. :)

One of my friends died of complications related to Crohn's. Before she died, she had some gruesome surgeries and spent a lot of time in hospitals. It's not remotely funny to me.

i hate to be negative....but I have been hearing that they are "closer to a cure" or "they are making a lot of progress" or my favorite "there have been some amazing breakthroughs" since i was 11 or 12. And shit hasn't changed. its not happening in our lifetime.

man, i know what it's like, to see the person you love in agonising pain for days on end, seeing them cry and scream and not being able to do anything about it but take them to get a morphine shot so they can sleep. i'm talking about joe's migraines here. what annoys me is that they can make medical breakthroughs to make someone's tits bigger, or give old men erections, but they can't do anything for someone who has suffered a debilitating condition since they were a child.

good for you guys for doing something about it (y)

it's terrible how conventional medicine can't do a thing for such migraines. and even natural medicine has very little to offer for it. it's such a helpless feeling being unable to change a thing about it. watching the one you love suffer in pain is unbearable.

Okay, I admit. I didn't know what it was, and any definitions I found of it, made it sound trivial. You know, "weight loss" and "abdominal pain", it didn't really concern me as a huge problem.

I am wrong and I apoligise.
thanks yo.

i wish i had some money to support you both with (:(), but i'm broke. i hope the walk is really successful, and maybe more awareness will spur government funding (which i assume there isn't at this time, since we need to fund a ridiculous war). my ex's aunt has it. she's a great lady who has lived a very painful life because of it. i can't imagine dealing with it on a daily basis as the two of you do.

sorry about your friend, documad.

sorry about joe, too, zorra. i get stress headaches, lack of caffeine headaches, eye strain headaches, and migraines. but my migraines are nowhere near the severity joe experiences, and mine i can catch when they're coming on (i start to lose vision in my right eye). they also know what causes mine, so at least i don't have to deal with people claiming i'm making it up. i had a neighbor i took to the hospital 3 times for her migraines, and the last time i took her, the docs thought she was just trying to get drugs.

Same with my dad. Hemoplegic migraines. Mini-strokes that attack the brain and body. The scariest thing was seeing my dad unable to move, just vomit and scream. I hate, hate, HATE seeing him have migraines. It's not normal to see the male role model in your life being so helpless, seeing him so vulnerable and in pain. They're like half a day long, and always end up with him going to the hospital. It affects his brain everytime it happens and he loses a little bit of his memory.

I'd donate to you guys if I had money, Jess/Steger! But I'm still waiting for my security clearance to go through with the government, so I have no job and I'm dipping into my savings now. :( A good friend of mine has Chron's and I had no idea what it was when we were little, so we said she had butt cancer. She gained a lotta weight with the steroids she was on, too. And now insensitive pricks make fun of her weight. Sux0rz.

okay, seriously, everyone. i just had the scariest 20 seconds of my life. matt's actually in the midst of a flare-up right now, and he's had to go back on prescription medication. the stuff he takes makes him really nauseous, and it's hard for him to eat. he's lost easily 20 pounds in the last few months. tonight he couldn't eat dinner because he was so sick, and after i helped him upstairs (keep in mind he's about 9" taller than me), he collapsed facefirst on the bed, then sank onto the floor, where he sat for a moment before passing out. his eyes rolled back, the back of his head smacked against the wall, and all the color drained out of his face. i started screaming to wake up, trying to slap him awake, and shaking him - he was out for what seemed like hours. finally he opened his eyes and stared at me blankly. by now i was screaming, sobbing, begging him to say something, and all he could do was blink until finally he said, "i'm here, i'm here, what happened?"

and then he puked.

twice.

he's okay now, upstairs in bed. i'm just barely returning to a normal heartbeat.

fucking christ. :(

MR BOOMIN GRANNY YOUR INBOX IS FULL-
here is part 2

he eats lts of raw fats, and absolutely nothing cooked on the basis that cooking takes out the vital life of food, makes it less digestible and essentially kills it once and for all, changing its composition.
he eats raw salmon, tuna, buffalo, beef, eggs, lots of avocados, raw butter, raw goats or sheeps milk, coconut- not really any leafy greens, but carrots and some nuts. he also food forages in the forests for berries.
another big deal with this diet is kefer. the kefer you buy in the store is pasteurized- meaning it is mostly dead. there is actually very little probiotic life in pasteurized dairy- including yogurt. you need raw dairy, which unfortunately due to FDA is illegal to sell. so you need a co-op, or a farmer to buy directly from. they will sell if you tell them it is for your dog or pet (which is legal) or if you are honest and say that it is medicine.
some people sell kefer grains (little wads of beneficial bacteria which colonize the milk, digesting it for you and providing your gut with relenishment of this bacteria and also good nutrients) but buying them is expensive and unnecessary. my friend literally lets his raw milk get sour. milk gets sour because of the bacteria. but contrary to popular belief, it is good bacteria and is actually quite strong and will eat most lower forms of bad bacteria should any invade.

anyways, i hope you are healthy and happy. my buddy, his name is todd, is a wealth of knowledge on the topic, and has spent considerable time researching and becoming healthy. his life is his diet now, and he has changed everything. now, he is truly healthy and not being wierd or anything, he actually radiates life energy. its in his eyes and his attitude...i think its all the raw food. afterall, it is the way our bodies were designed to eat. if youd like i can get you in touch with him, or any of the poeple who have inspired his diet....hed love to help.
he is now completely of alll medications, and is totally healthy.

cosmo105
07-11-2006, 10:29 AM
^hrm. i'm getting the gist of what you must have sent him...unfortunately, he's on a low-fiber, dairy-free diet, and his doc just took him off probiotics. this flare-up has been so bad, i don't want to interfere with his conventional meds at all. there are a lot of natural routes we could take, but seriously...something that radical could kill him. :(

So now they asked me to walk. That was pretty clever of them, wasn't it?

It involves walking laps around the mall of america this fall. I hate the people who do that on a normal Sunday morning. I never go to the mall.

But I'm considering putting a group together -- if only because I'd be able to collect from all the people who pester me for the American Cancer Society and AIDS walks/runs/rides. And I get to be mall-walker! Whatever will I wear?
