My dad has been in the hospital and this girl next to him--about 19-25, I'd guess, had two tattoos. One initial on her left shoulder. One initial on her right shoulder. About 6-7" tall. Old-english style font.

The right shoulder's initial: "B". The left shoulder's initial: "M".

Maybe she didn't know that BM is a common medical acronym. The irony too because she was in for a GI series.

For my birthday a couple of weeks ago I got a big blue-green koi and some sweet-looking waves done all up my right shin. It came out looking really awesome and I'm really happy with it. My artist took some shots when he was done, maybe I'll see if he can send some over and I'll put them up.

This is the design I got, except only one fish and in blue and green with some nifty splash-style waves around it added by my artist. I don't know if they're for eating, but they are a common theme in traditional Chinese and Japanese artwork. I think they look really nice.

I like that more traditional, SIMPLE style rather than the more detailed. It's a bit more elegant, I guess.

I was thinking maybe some kingyo too, but they're more gold-fishy and less elegant-looking.

I've got a few small ones that I made myself 25 years ago, but they've totally faded now. I had the bat re-done about 15 years ago and he did a really bad job. Would definitively need re-doing again, but the wings ain't the right direction to the one I want, so it would need (painful and expensive) lightening first. Also my butterfly would need some new colour, that's done in '82 so it's quite faded. I'd like to have something new done, but ain't quite sure where (don't want anything on my lower back, all the girls have that...).

At one time I was playing with an idea of clematis climbing up my calf (I've got some serious liver spots I'd like covered), or iris (my favourite flower, and my favourite cat) somewhere. Also I took a pic of some awesome graffiti on the subway door in Rome, some purple stars, that were so like me, so I'd like those included...

This is my neighbor, she is such a sweetie but she is COVERED in tattoos. You can't really see that much here but they are everywhere...she even has one on each of her toes. the next two are in a black tribal kind of design; I made the mistake of going too smal and over the years the ink has bled making them less distinguisable. they are a tiger and a dragon the taoist symbols for yin and yang.

nope no logos for me. personally I'm not into to "brand" or "cartoon" tats. that's just not me. I love asian art and that's the theme I've decided to go with. when I add more I will keep with the theme.

this may sound like a stupid question but if you get a tattoo in an area that has to be shaved, is it likely to get infected when the hair grows back while the tattoo is healing? if i get a tattoo i'll prolly get it on my chest i'm just wondering what the chances are of complications

Every area has to be shaved before a tattoo. Any hair can clog the gun and stop the flow of ink. If you keep the fresh tattoo clean like your supposed to, you don't have to worry... except for the itching as it grows back.

pain - for me, it was a really hot scalpel(sp) being dragged through the top of my skin. it was a pain that i got used to but some areas around mine (the bottom right paw) hurt like hell.
how long - the guy started mine at... 11:10am? and he finished around 12:55ish?
re-colour - i dunno, wait till it's a bit faded and go back.
infection - i bought some medical soap from coles and washed it softly with that. they shoulda recommend some cream for it. mine was some nappy rash stuff.. begins with B.

It's called Bepanthen, pretty good stuff. My lil sis uses it now on any skin irritation she gets from the cleanser at work, and she has sensitive skin.

If you're worried about anything, a good tattooist will have a chat with you about it all - if you find yourself in Melb (and can wait it get inked) I can recommend the place that did mine, they were absolutely fantastic. I was worried about the pain/ink running/infection but he addressed it all and was really careful.
I suppose avoid any tattooists in a 'touristy' area, when I was looking around they were generally less careful and less interested in making it a nice exp.

Mine is about 4cm by 4cm, took about 45 minutes, b/c he outlined the the outer parts and the inner parts of the lion's head then filled the outline in black. the pain was absolutely bearable, and i'm a massive wuss :p there are a few moments when it'll sorta just twinge a bit but yeah...mine hurt more afterwards while it was healing, it felt like i'd been punched.

keep it out of the sun and it shouldn't fade too much...my bf's mum has had hers for 20 years or so, and hers is still quite good and doesn't need to be touched up much.

i was gonna get it done here actually. (there's less choice, but i still think it will be ok) a friend of joe's told me about this place in hobart where he got his done.

Pain: Depending on what part of the body, mild to excruciating.
Time: Depends on size and intricacy.
Color: A touch up could be required after healing, depending on your skin, what type of pigment (ink) and how well you heal.
Infection: You should be ok as long as you clean it and follow you healing directions.
Sensitive skin: Some people have reactions to different pigments (inks). Ask your artist if he knows of ANY adverse reactions to his or her particular supply of inks.

Do some research on the web.

no it's not that I don't expect people to have thier opinions or for them not to say hey that's not for me, I would never choose that. I was more upset about they way those opinions were chose to be expressed. if you consider someone your friend or you at least have an ounce of respect for them you don't make remarks with nasty overtones because, OMG it's the internet lol and we can say what ever mean shit we want because the person isn't in front of us.

and maybe I do take it too persoanally, but It's hard for me not to because I drew the design. so lots people on this site are artistic and post thier art and if it gets ripped I'm pretty sure they feel bad about it even though it's the internet and they put it out there.

all the artist did was copy my design and follow my requests. now the pictures aren't awesome, it had some A&D lotion on it which gave off some shine which isn't a true refelction of what it looks like in person. I probalby shouldn't expect anyone to know the symbolism of what the Staff of Asclesius means so it probably looks like an odd choice to some. and it's far from being done. I have a touch up to go back for and there will be background added and other stuff.....andso you're thinking yeah, if I realize this I shouldn't be so sensative and I guess that's true and I wouldn't have been if I felt the critisim had been put forth in a more respectful manner.

and lastly, it would have been one thing if I had come in this thread critisizing everyone elses tats and saying they need better tat artists, but that's not what happened. I have spoken about finding good tat artists (ones that you personally like thier work) and I am up on who the hot artists are on an international level. that doesn't mean I have the disposable income and time to be tattooed by them. I went to a reputable shop (owned by one of those internationally know artists) and the artist had over 10 years of experience and a portfolio that looked good. Perhaps the design I gave her didn't really showcase her talents well, but that's my fault. Anyway the point is I by no means came in here braging about how great my tat was, nor did I put anyone elses down. (and to be frank I don't think anyother members tats were critisized in this thread regardless of quality). So yeah I'm pretty fucking pissed that I was treated shitty.

it's pretty simple though, most people on this site aren't really tat fans, only a handful are. and the people making comments, well most of them don't even have tattoos. So I really shouldn't share it with you guys anway. I'll stick to posting on tattoo message board and forum. and I'm really kinda disapointed that I mistook this as a "safe" place to share my work. but the bottom line of why I'm upset is that there was a respectful way to tell me you don't like it and then there was the snide nasty way in which I was told.

i have three shitty tattoos. but they're mine and i <3 them. my first is a chain of daisies around my right ankle. i liked stuff i had seen by the dude, and i liked what he drew, but he fucked up on the flowers and the lines are too thick. whatever, it looks fine from a distance. :) one is on my big toe and i fought the guy to put it there (toes don't hold ink well). my third is on the middle of my lower back, and it isn't as dark as i had hoped. i can always get it colored though.

i plan on getting at least one more, but i'm going to have to save to have it done the way i want. and i'll have that person darken the one on my back.

I only think it's good to get one if you were in like special forces, ranger or any other elite group.

I've seen too many guys with their old units tattooed on them or their tours overseas and I think that shit's too tacky.

I can't stand to see when people just have plain "ARMY" or even "MARINES". My friend has been in the marines for 15 years and he isn't even considering getting a marine tat. My dad has a marine tat but he deserved it since he's done 6 years in Veitnam.

They're just attention whoring. It's stupid. The dogtags are made of a material that can withstand flames and whatnot just for that reason.

Getting that stuff isn't going to do any good if they roll over an ied and get torn to pieces. Their dogtags infact will still be in one piece for identity.


My friend had a tat that went all the way around his neck with dotted lines that said, "Cut here". hahaha.

I have been thinking of getting another tattoo in honor of my son Aiden.
He was born on August 17th and is a Leo. Aiden translates to firey. I was thinking of the Scottish lion with a celtic knot banner underneath the graphic with his full name...........or hmmm...........still thinking. I like the idea but I always said I would stick with my family crest. Anyone?

I'm a CADD drafter/desiger so I deal mainly with engineers.
I never see clients, or have to rep the company to the public.
Even if I was put into that type of position one day, I could just wear long sleeves.

Mot, your tats look amazing. Where are you from? I wish I lived someplace that attracted artists with that depth of talent. Here in nowhereseville you basically have to take what you can get, and you're lucky if you can find anyone with even a semblance of an idea for a good tattoo.

There are a lot of tattooers here, but most of them are average at best.
I looked for about six years for someone to do my bio-mech leg.
Sadly, he is moving back to San Francisco.
