there's always those bands that people you know RAVE about, and you give them a lot of listening and TRY to like them, but you just can't. or bands that make you look cool, so you try to listen to them so you can look cool too, but you don't like them, so you don't feel as cool. this is what this thread is about y'all.
-birthday party
-jon spencer blues explosion
-bjork
-joy division (i have two albums but i never really liked them.)

Respect but just don't get:
Pink Floyd
The Beatles (thats right, I said the beatles)
Bob Dylan
Beta Band
Sure some songs I like, but I am more likely to look for something else to listen to if they are on.
Just can't like, not sure if really want to after trying a few times:
KISS
REM
Death Cab for Cutie
The Raconteurs (only tried once so things may change in the future)
Tupac
Jay Z

I'll second Modest Mouse, and I'll add Franz Ferdinand. Never understood what the attraction is/was, but my roommate was into it for a while.
I also don't get the big deal about Gnarls Barkley. Shit seems mediocre at best from what I've heard - which is a fair bit because it seems to work its way into most parties I've attended this summer.

Gnarls Barkley, I guess I've kind of fallen for their big song (but I don't have TV and I have a feeling I would be sick of it if I did since it's oversaturation...the fact that even I know about it must mean it's being played way too much
Sleater-Kinney - I've tried .. But I'll probably keep trying

i forced myself to love the pumpkins in high school because of a boy. now i only listen to them for nostalgia...a few of the singles are good and a couple other tracks, but billy corgan blew so much fairy dust up his own I AM A ROCK GOD ass i just can't appreciate it anymore.
sleater-kinney's definitely an acquired taste. The Woods really grew on me though (holy shit a pun!). i think a good starter is you're no rock 'n' roll fun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1L2kfm1yTw).
le tigre i also enjoy, and my best friend's really into them, and i know it's something i would probably dig...i just haven't ever gotten around to really giving them a good listen.

my ex ruined joy division for me. now i seriously can't stand them.
i can understand people not getting jeff buckley...you either love him, or you don't. i got into him at the right point in my life to really fall in love with his music. if i just heard of him now, though, i might not be such a fan.
oh, and jurassic 5. just can't get into 'em.
beck...i like guero and i like some of his other stuff, but i dunno, i just get bored. i feel bad because he seems like such a cool guy, too. i put odelay on my MP3 player and i try to stick with the songs, but about 90% of the time i skip a track when it comes on.
and you're gonna lynch me for this, but i can't get into public enemy, and i've tried so hard, and i want to, but i can't. i like some songs, i love black steel in the hour of chaos, i love chuck D, but that baloon noise and flava flav just turn me off of it, i can't get over it. it's so petty, but there it is. flava flav is annoying, i don't think he belongs there. i don't get it.
cosmo105
07-10-2006, 01:28 PM
about beck - matt's said it well. when he's good, he's really good. when he's mediocre, he's really mediocre.
and you're gonna lynch me for this, but i can't get into public enemy...
Man, I feel the same way. I really want to just listen to them a lot and be a huge fan, but the cheesey drones and wacky squeaks...Not to mention that Flava Flav is pretty limited in the talent department. It seems to me more like he clashes with Chuck D's sincere and well written rhymes than he compliments them with comic foil.
If Chuck D hooked up with a good producer I'd be up for listening to solo work.
I won't talk about Beck.

that's exactly how i feel, yeah. i feel guilty for dismissing the whole group because of a few annoying gimmicks but man, i can't get past them. i really do like chuck D, a lot, but the rest...pass.
maybe i'm missing something, but flava flav seems like such a...clown, i don't get it, what's he doing in public enemy?
Seriously! He's a frickin' joke.
All he ever did was hurt the group's credibility. Even when he tried to make some kind of "social commentary" with '911 is a joke' he offered no actual suggestions.
He filled all the black stereotypes and faults that Chuck D was trying to fight against, negated a lot of the groups pro-active lyrics.

Chuck D. was a lot more Malcolm X than Martin Luther King Jr.

ok here's my big one;
it's not that i can't listen to them, but it's more 'i really only like 2 or 3 of their songs and usually skip it whenever it comes on' - De La Soul.
they don't have shit songs, by all means. i own '3 feet' and 'de la is dead' and i can listen to the SONGS on there, but the high amount of skits piss me off that much that i'll always never put the cds on/never recommend them/never WANT to listen to them. i have indeed tried to get into them, and i do want to but yeah... i'm struggling.

i fucking loathe skits and De La Soul are particularly guilty of it - so I'd go with that.

I dunno if thats true. There are loadsa druggies in the flats i live in. There coridoor stinks of weed and they're always coked up ect. And they listen to the worse shit ive ever heard. Dance music thats shitty pop songs supposidly "remixed" when all they've done is set a shitty keyboard preset backing to it. FUCK!
you can listen to other shit too but lots of 70's music is more enjoyable when youre high and totally boring when youre me

In fact, here's a rant I had a few years ago about skits in hip-hop - Read Me Seymour! (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/reviews/cyne/evolution-fight.htm)

Get 'Grind Date' or 'Impossible Mission' and work backwards.
It's a fair call, though. The skits bug the shit out of me.
