pay you out in front of members of the opposite sex to make themselves look better?
it's been happening to me all night so far. there's a few girls over at my house atm who i've never been interested in, and at every opportunity my housemate, tom, has had an opposite opinion to whatever i've had to say. And every time he cant think of a witty comeback he ends the conversation with, "you're a chubby bastard pat." i'm cool with that coz i am a bit chubby, but fucking he's said that like half a dozen times so far. that's really starting to piss me off. It's just lame, that's why it's pissing me off. this guy has such a fucking mundane life. he does IT at uni, he works in IT, he never goes out, his idea of going out is to have 3 beers throughout the night while watching us play poker, also he's 21 and only had sex once in his life and also that girl accused him of rape. in one word he's a ZOLTAN
anyone else got friends like this? that pay out your flaws to make themself look better?
and is anyone in favour of me hitting him to shut him up?
hahaha nah i don't have them but i know the type.
one of my mates always grabs my hand and tries to slap chick's arses with it and it irritates the shit outta me. definately saying something this weekend because it really doesn't help 'hitting' a chick when we're trying to dance with them.

it's just so lame that i ignore it. i wasn't interested in those girls and tom's only had sex once in his life and he's now 21, so if he think's it'll help him by paying me out then so be it, lol.
i just think it's sad that ppl can be so insecure that they have to point out other peoples flaws to make themselves look better

Don't hit him, but next time he says something about you being chubby wit back at him with a " At least I get laid." or a " You know it makes you look cool and desirable when you rip on your friends."
That is the type of person I am, I just point out the reality of how stupid they look and it usally works. My sister in law is one of those, if you have done so has she or someone she knows did it. I have a theory that these types of ppl have no self-esteem and feel that others will only like them if they are more colorful than anyone else, but we can ALL tell who these ppl are and than once they are outted we can all just get together and talk about them behind thier backs. LOL Good luck!

Be like: "at least i dont have HIV"
or i can say something lower like " at least i haven't been accused of rape"
but that's prolly little too harsh. true, but harsh

I think that would be way harsh dude. sometimes ppl like that can be handled with silence thus making them look even dumber.

I had this one friend and when I first met him and when he was first introducing me to a particular group of his friends from his old university, he did that. His friends were asking me questions and he'd contradict what I said or would...I don't know, sort of play down some particular thing/accomplishment of mine that his friends had asked me about. It was awkward for everyone. I didn't want to call him on it in front of his friends, but I did later on when we were alone. He denied it or defended it or called me hyper-sensitive or something. The next time with that particular group of friends, the same thing happened AND one of his friends started to pick up on it. I felt like the center of their jokes although I wasn't joking. That same friend did that same thing to me when he was introducing me to his one brother.
I eventually figured out that it had something to do with people that he wanted to impress, although I don't know how what he did accomplished anything but make him look insecure and idiotic. It was pissy and I hated the way he morphed into an ass in those sorts of situations; I more hated that he couldn't see that he was doing that. Hard to be objective but still.

i had the same thing happen a while ago at uni to as well. i was telling some of this guys friends that i was doing a dual degree in maths and business, and straight away he said " what? are you even GOOD enough to be doing maths?" he said it a tone where he saying basically saying you're an idiot pat which really really pissed me off because maths is my speciallity, to be honest i've never met anyone faster at maths than me, not even teachers. anyway later when we were alone i was like " wtf was all that about lloyd?" and yeah he gave me the same response, said i was over reacting etc. i cant stand ppl like that. fucking losers

Plus, a lot of the Australians that I know sometimes take this tone to the things that they say that puts me and a lot of my American friends off. Like what your friend said above--that could be a really pissy slam or it could be a joke. It's hard to tell. But I know these people and when it comes to that tone thing, they truly don't mean it the way we're taking it or the way it seems. It's puzzling to me but I usually just throw it away when it gets my hackles up. It's something related to something that I don't quite understand altogether, maybe because I'm not 100% immersed in their/your culture.
You're from Australia so if it is some cultural thing, you maybe would have noticed it before this or not at all and would maybe be doing it yourself. :)

Thank Garp I don't have a roommate. Unless you count my wife. And the stories I could tell about taht all end up in CAPS LOCK, clothes hangers, large utensils, Tabasco, Zippos, a deck of cards, Life magazine, butter and Bob Segar playing
And I end the showdown with my acoustic bass guitar being used as a samarai sword.

hmm, Australian's do take the piss out of each other all the time, it's very common, i do it to ppl all the time and ppl do it to me too, but we still have stupid fucking jocks with over inflated egos that think they're gods gift to women etc. which was the case with this guy. i guess we're just not as sensitive as americans in general, is that what you mean?

I think there is some aspect of this that's definitely a cultural thing. It is very odd, though. I've known some of these people for close to 20 years and I still haven't quite figured it out. I do know, though, that they're good people. Like really good, salt-of-the-earth sorts of people who would do anything for you. So when my hackles go up, I have to bite that back and realize that they're just doing what they do and that they mean absolutely no harm by it. That said, though, it's sometimes awkward when I merge my Australian-friends-world with my U.S.-friends-world because they (of course) don't get that and hackles go up lots. :)
I had better get used to it because within the next 3-6 years, I will be living there. :p
