so, I have my lovely emulators and all that but trying to do the scrolling levels in mario or trying to beat bosses in other games gets tricky on the keyboard.
Any suggestions as to what brand/type of controller I should get? I usually play NES/SNES, if that helps.

word i want one too....
... and if anyone can suggest how to get MAME emulators to work that'd be great too...
(MAME is the emulator that let you play old arcade games the same way they were as coin operated ones back in the day)

I bought this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0000TNJWM/202-9943551-9430235?v=glance&n=300703) a couple of weeks ago. Bit pissed at first as it wasnt real analog, moving it a little is the same as just pushing a button. But a cool feature is the fact that you just asign the buttons to keys on the key board (or the mouse) so theres no need to worry about the controller not being supported by any game. Plus it keeps your hands cool. Might be a bit to advance for your needs though. But its only £9 here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/detail/offer-listing/-/B0000TNJWM/all/ref=dp_olp_1/202-9943551-9430235?%5Fencoding=UTF8).
If its only nes and snes games you play then I'm pretty sure you can get a snes-like controller for the pc

I use a MS Sidewinder with the MAME32 emulator and it works like a charm. Analog sticks and all. You'd be well off with a general run-of-the-mill gamepad seeing as you're using it for an NES emulator...that's if the emu supports joysticks of course.
I've had problems in the past using joysticks with RockNES. Smooth as butter with MAME32 though.

I forget the brand but I got this $10 USB controller that looks and feels almost identical to a PS2 controller. I'll check who makes it when I get home.

I read in EGM that they now have exact copies of contorlers such as the NES retrofitted with USB ports, if anybody knows where that is they can help you right now otherwise you'd have to wait till tomm. when I get home

you can buy a pc version of the xbox 360 controller. it's made by microsoft so it's not some knock-off. it's exactly the same except it has a usb cord. i have it. it rocks

i've got a logitech dual action one, which is basically a PS2 controller. It rocks (y)
For what it's worth, I have set up the controller so that a couple of the top left and right buttons are mouse1 and escape, and one of the analogue controllers moves the mouse. that way in zsnes you can easily switch between games, load saved games etc. without having to get up off the couch (i use it on my media pc attached to the tv for that extra authenticity  )

I think I'd want that most of all. Cool. Let me know if you find it/a link (y)
