its not required until Jan 2007 but how big of a hassle is it
anyone know?

Well, you're gonna need your drivers license AND a birth certificate. You won't make it into the US (and back) any other way, if you're currently not packing a passport.
I've already got a passport (got it in 2002) even though it's not an absolute requirement, but I figured it's best to travel these borders hassle-free during this post-9/11 environment.
You can get away with it now, but I highly reccomend you don't doddle when it comes to applying for a passport. It's really not that difficult to get one.

Yeah dude, don't listen to anyone when they tell you you just need an ID. It works that way coming OUT of Canada into the US, but not the other way around (at least it did for me). They specifically asked for my birth certificate (or passport equivalent) when I was trying to get in. Go figure. But yeah, you don't need a passport until the beginning of 2007.
And it wasn't a hassle in the least. They just look at it, and hand it back. Easy as pie.
