I guess it's just a [mind] game that some people seem to enjoy playing and watching unfold. I don't get it, but I figured that that not getting it is a generational thing. I think some people think they're being complex when they do aliases. Create an alias; share the password. On some levels, maybe it's fun or cool to them but to me, when they do it to be mean or to glean information/trust from someone or so that they can point-laugh ("hahah, this one didn't know that that one was an alias") that's just...pitifully sad.
