my prediction? Xbox 360, followed by Wii, with PS3 trailing its ass three miles back in sales.

That hasn't been confirmed, and is merely speculation. I doubt Sony would impliment that on the PS3. It is wrong on so many levels, and not to mention, to a degree, it wouldn't work out. That would also mean that video rental stores wouldn't be able carry PS3 games. There goes potential profit.

As for the new generation of consoles, well the Xbox 360 will more than likely do very well in North America, but they're currently bombing in Japan, and I don't just mean poor sales, I mean absolute failure. The reason for this is because japs don't trust american console developers

To explain:

- Here are the latest Japanese console hardware sales for the week of June 26 - July 2, 2006:

1. DS Lite - 153,566 units
2. PSP - 25,935 units
3. PlayStation 2 - 23,133 units
4. NDS - 3,504 units
5. GBA SP - 2,919 units
6. Xbox 360 - 1,897 units
7. GB Micro - 1,443 units
8. GameCube - 1,002 units
9. GBA - 17 units
10. Xbox - 8 units

That was taken from The Magicbox. Look at that, Xbox 360 sold ~1,900 units, and the Xbox sold a whopping 8 units! >_>

As for here in North America, as I've said, Xbox 360 will do well, because american gamers will eat up all the sports and racing games, and so on. Not that the console will have that many original titles. (ports/remakes don't count) Unlike the PS3, that of course, will have a wide selection of original titles. Initially, PS3 won't do so well, because of the outrageous package deal prices, but that will turn around as better games are released. Then again, you can't count out all the hardcore fans, spoiled children, and wealthy people that will undoubtedly buy it.

As for the Wii Wii, that's hard to say right now. Providing enough third-party developers make a fair amount of original titles, then the console could succeed. Solely first-party titles don't cut it.

I'll buy a Wii on launch day, but I'll wait half a year or so for the PS3. And the Xbox 360, if I do decide to buy one, it will be when the pricetag is $150 or so, and there are a good enough selection of games. I got suckered once with the Xbox, and that was solely bought to play Shenmue 2, which I could have just played on the Dreamcast, with the european version. It even had north american voice actors.

Sony already fucked up on the price point, so why not just castrate themselves before the lethal injection?

Nice Dreams is playing on TV right now.

Sony Delays PS3 Until 2007 For PAL Countries (http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/top/sony-delays-ps3-until-2007-for-pal-countries-198717.php)

And Sony just lost Europe. And Russia. And the Middle East. And Africa. And the fabled Xanadu of 'Australasia', wherever the hell that is. All PAL territories, in fact.

Loudly trumping their own death knell, Sony started off this morning in Europe with a bang: Sony's Playstation 3 won't hit PAL territories until March, 2007, due to manufacturing difficulties with the Playstation 3's Blu-Ray diodes, which are the magic oculi that scrutinizes the contents of their proprietary, unproven next-generation media format that no one even really wants.

If you're in the States or Japan, don't worry, your PS3s are still coming in November. For every other place in the entire world? You're shit out of luck.

Really, this isn't news to anyone who was at Leipzig and noticed that Sony's entire press conference was essentially just an open boozer, where nothing new was said or presented. It was like an Irish wake for the Playstation 3's still-birth in Europe.

Press release after the jump:

London, Wednesday 6 September 2006 - Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that it would revise the launch date of its PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system in the PAL territories of Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia from 17th November 2006, as previously announced to March 2007.

Launch dates for Japan and North America will remain the same, which are November 11th and November 17th respectively.

The revision of the launch date in the SCEE territories is caused by the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PLAYSTATION 3.

The previously announced PLAYSTATION 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed.
suckahs!
good. i hope nintendo grab this opportunity with both hands and finally stop their no release date as yet nonsense and come out with a "HEY! dry those PS3 eyes! buy our shiny new wii on november xth!" type press release. and soon.

The PS3 won't come with video hook ups either. If you want an HDMI cable (http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/ps3-shipping-without-hdmi-cable-198269.php) to hook up your $500 PS3 to your $1800 HDTV. (Although cheap off brand ones are $5, I think.)

Basically ...
$600 PS3 = EVERYTHING IS WIRELESS, BIG HARD DRIVE OMG
$500 PS3 = Still expensive and nowhere near as worth $100 less

And their price point is going to fuck them up.

Or what Claire said...

they shot themselves in the foot when they announced the price. At this point they've also shot themselves in the stomach, thighs, abdomen, groin, lower back, shins, and shoulders.
