I miss those. Everyone had one in the early-to-mid 90s. I'd substitute cell phones for those now. Stress-free environment, if you ask me. Hey, those little gems even had the VIBRATE FUNCTION. Okay, as do cell phones.

I didn't have one though. I was still pretty young.

Did you?

I never had one, but a couple of my friends did.

my phone doesn't have a vibrate function, although my ringer isnt loud and it vibrates with the regular ring

it has this really terrible setting though where it has this alarm like ringing that just doesnt stop

nobody calls me though, so having a cell phone is almost as equivalent to a pager

I remember that 41 used to mean "fuck you". I think. I used to send 41414141414141 to my boyfriend when he didn't call me back. I also remember typing 911 a lot to make people call me back quicker. and my friends were all, "WHAT?!" and I'd say, "nuffin, just wanted you to call me". ha ha hahahhaha, annoying. although, back then my little group of friends would call eachother like 5 times a day. I did have a cell phone in the car for emergencies, it was the size of my fist. I still have it, I should reactivate it.

that should be easy peasy for some tech dork. you could probably even find out how online. I saw a thing once where someone put their cell phone into an old rotary phone.

Yeah, I used to sport a pager. Then I got a cell phone and dropped the whole pager thing.

Actually, I kind of miss the pager, now that I think about it.

My old pager was dark blue, though. (http://www.bargainbeepers.com/BR850-Motorola-Pager.jpg) I liked that I could get messages on it. **143 was "I love you." It made me feel good just to get that message every so often.

It was only $10 a month, plus I didn't feel incredibly rushed to get back to people because they knew I'd have to get to a phone if I didn't have my cell on me (cell was only an emergency cell - 80 minutes a month). I remember my other friend and I were the only ones with beepers or anything else, so all my friends would call us when we were out on the town to meet up with us. It made us feel special.

That was like 1999. I remember the cell phone revolution exploded in 2001/2002. At least around here. Then I got mocked for my beeper and had to get a cell.

In the end, I think people were better off with simple beepers. Today, the cell is so ingrained around your surroundings that it's depressing. The sad truth that people heavily rely on contacting someone every hour is troubling. Then again, the phone has never been an essential tool for me.

they gave me one for my first job in detroit, it was annoying as shit and my boss would page me all the time, very un-gansta. at the time it was kinda dumb to have one anyways, which made matters worse.

beepers have disappeared due to women using them as sex-toys and forgetting to remove them frm their cavernous vaginas.

We still have pagers for work that we take home if our team is on call.

And I agree that it's depressing that mobile phones are so ingrained into our environment. It's probably most annoying at the cinema, especially when they have the warnings to turn your phone off....yet all through the film you can see the little glow of phone screens as people are busy texting rather than watching the film they paid to see.

I had codes with people if I was calling from a different number they knew it was me. 101. always 101...and you know why ...because I was the one and only one. LAME!

I had codes with people if I was calling from a different number they knew it was me.
wasn't that normal?

I was 515. Cause one night I was all highed up at the first time at a taco bell and some yo boy walked in shouting "FIIIIIIVEEE FIIIITEEEENNNNN" and it made me get the giggles.

the were all sorts of codes.

Like if something was hilarious on tv, you page some one with the channel number so you didn't have to talk to them.

or "515 60 2 [Last four digits of someones home phone] 730"

meaning 515 (me) 60 2 (go to) last four digits of someones house at 7:30.

and variations of that.

asking for amounts of weed got more complicated.

I think all those codes were nationwide though...right? not just the MD/VA/DC area.

I used to have a gang of pagers. They've been lost, stolen, thrown out of car windows in heated arguments and one was even eaten by a dog. I've had a few cell phones over the years, too, buy not many. I'm not a big phone person. I actually prefer a pager to a cell phone. I don't like the idea of someone having access to me day and night. I want to be able to look at the number and decide for myself whether or not I want to call them back.

^Yeah, the power of calling back vs. not is an awesome one.

I'd assign codes to all my friends, too. It'd be their birthday, minus the year. So mine would be 928 for September 28th. And since I have an awesome memory, I'd always know who was paging.

So... I think we can all agree:

PAGERS FOR THE WIN

MOBILE PHONES FOR THE LOSE
